FOOD FIGHT!! Two Spider crabs having a tussle over food! Fantastic image by @conrad_bizjak_photography 🦀 🦀 🦀 It is NOT ok to harvest these iconic Australian animals en masse when they come into the shallows for ‘safety in numbers’ to moult their shells like ‘shooting fish in a bucket’. Over the space of several hours of intensive targeting, almost all of these small, meatless crabs were taken with very few allowed to complete their moulting process. The crabbing practices that have emerged in the past two years have also caused significant environmental damage and increased risk to the dozens of observers in the water at any given time who have flocked to the peninsula for many years to witness this natural spectacle. We strongly advocate for a ‘No-Take’ Season during these annual moulting aggregations to allow this natural phenomenon to continue to be observed as a long-standing tradition in Australia’s beautiful Port Phillip Bay. We urge that the law be changed to preserve this important part of Mornington Peninsula’s spectacular wildlife celebration for generations to come. 3 crab species found on the farm last week! First the Spider Crab-these guys are slow moving and harmless to humans. They get their name because they resemble a spider. To defend themselves they don’t have big claws so they tend to use camouflage rather than aggression. They scrape algae and detritus from structures using their small claws. They decorate their shell to blend with their environment by securing items like sea lettuce and sponge to the top of their shell (carapace) with a type of glue secreted from their mouth! They are related to the giant Japanese spider crabs but on the Atlantic coast they don’t get much bigger than 4 inches. The next crab the Striped Hermit crab isn’t a true crab- it borrows its shell from other shelled animals and switches it out as it grows. Their abdomen is spiral shaped and their rear legs hold the crab very tightly in its shell so it can’t be pulled out easily. Don’t confuse these guys with the terrestrial species that are sold at stores sometimes- these guys won’t survive out of the water long! Last is the Blue Crab which is the only swimming crab out of these 3 with their paddle-like swimmerets on the back. Happy Turtle Tuesday! 🐢 Its sea turtle nesting season and nests are hatching! Last week, we joined volunteers with the Coastal Wildlife Club to walk a portion of Englewood Beach to see if there were new nests or if any nests hatched during the night.) Two loggerhead sea turtle nests were excavated. Excavation is typically done a couple of days after a hatching so volunteers can count how many hatchlings emerged, how many eggs did not hatch, and see if there are any hatchlings left in the nest. Data is recorded and provided to Florida Fish and Wildlife. During the pictured excavation, there were almost 100 eggs in the original nest! About 10 did not hatch and there was one hatchling. She was brought out of the nest, placed on the ground, and instinctively headed towards the waves of the Gulf of Mexico. She made it and began the next chapter of her life. After excavation, all contents are returned to the nest and a line of shells are placed to mark where the original nest was. Remember, when you see a sea turtle nest - or a sea turtle - on the beach, do not disturb it! These volunteers patrol from April 15 through October.
