Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing curated scenes featuring the objects in our tea waste collection. Selecting the materials and structures for these compositions is allowing us to communicate the influences behind our studio processes and our finished pieces. Working with organic materials has always been at the heart of the Dust London collaboration. The rock matter shown here bring an organic texture and structural balance to the configuration. Also featured in this scene are the origami stands which we used as platforms for our objects at the Tate Modern show last year. A theme we will be exploring in future scenes is the transition between liquid and solid states. #jonsstudiogear #4 Of all my synths, probably the one I use the most is the Juno 6. It’s quite a basic synth - very simple to use - but just has a great round fundamental tone to it that works in a range of contexts & makes it a very versatile instrument. It’s one of those sounds that just sits really well in a mix. I first used a Juno back when I was studying at @nftsfilmtv in 07/08. I found that the school had a battered old Juno 106. It was faulty, with various problems, but still made some great sounds & I set it up in my cabin on the school site to experiment with. It became a fundamental element of one of my graduation projects - the score for director Tom Green’s short film ‘Kid’ (after film school Tom went straight on to being lead director on the E4 series ‘Misfits’). I tried to buy that synth off the school, but the school technician wouldn’t let me (he did sell me the school’s Roland D550, but I never got on with that synth). A few years later, when I got the job scoring the #blackmirror episode “White Bear” & was searching for new electronic sounds, I decided to get hold of my own Juno. That was just before they surged in popularity (partly down to prominent use by artists like #nilsfrahm & @olafurarnalds) & I picked up a supposedly fully serviced “excellent condition” 106 for £500. The 106 is a notoriously problematic synth for faulty voice chips & sure enough mine had continual issues. It was an important element of that Black Mirror score though. Eventually, when I began scoring The Feed, I decided to replace the 106 with a Juno 6. The 6 is a much more reliable synth & with a better tone (less harsh) so this worked very well & it became a key element of that score. I’ve also used it extensively in my music for @rainbow6game_us. I nearly always run the Juno through a pair of @strymonengineering pedals (Timeline & Big Sky), which makes some great sounds. Let’s hear it for racks. Using a lot of this still in the tracking downtime to catch up on such a huge backlog of mixing. It’s not easy with Exie demanding my attention literally every few minutes but I find a way to get stuff done and most days manda comes to hang with Exie (Cos they are best friends)and help me get some time. Later this year, I’ll be putting in new rack furniture to accommodate more gear as I am simply out of space right now and each time something new comes in, something else gets put to the side temporarily. Here’s a few snippets all from the same patch. All analog sequencing with a “generative” twist where the sequence never repeats exactly the same way. The two rows of the sequencer each control an oscillator. The top row goes through a sequence selector with three steps. A new step gets triggered every time the sequence reaches step 8. The first step on the sequence selector passes cv directly through. On The second step the cv sequence is offset ,by four sequence steps, through an analog shift register. On the third step there’s no cv but a gate fires hitting the strobe input on the sequencer. This strobe function is set up to restart the sequence from a random step. The fourth video is a close up of how the sequencer is moving. I’ve been slowly working on a batch of ambient music using this and similar techniques to create very long recordings that don’t repeat. Not like “cool guy ambient” but more just like music to put my kids to sleep to. These ones didn’t make the cut but sounded interesting anyways. It’s fun and challenging to come up with interlocking sequences that will play nice with each other while either offset / transposed or both. Trying (and mostly failing) at compositional experiments like this has opened up whole new level of appreciation for something like the Goldberg variations. #jonsstudiogear #7 Another iconic classic in my collection - the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5! The Prophet was a revolutionary synth release in 1978. The first fully programmable polyphonic synth. Proper patch memory! You could actually save sounds! To easily switch between up to 40 sounds at the touch of a button & to load in external patches (via tape) - as straightforward as this seems now it must have seemed like a radical step forward at the time. The Yamaha CS80 came out at roughly the same time & was a more powerful synth but (aside from sounding great) the patch memory & easy portability of the Prophet gave it a different angle that helped make it a hit. I have to confess that with patch memory being less of an issue for me (if I want to easily flick through sounds then I can do this to the nth degree in the computer - I look to analogue synths for their individuality & character) then the polysynths that I find myself turning to are the #oberheim Four Voice & Roland #juno 6 more often than the Prophet. The more primitive nature, independence between the voices & distinctive filter character of the Oberheim hold more charm for me; while the Juno is a simpler synth to work with quickly (& to my ears with a fuller tone). My Prophet 5 is a rev3.3 - the last model produced. This has the advantage of MIDI as standard & theoretically more reliable than a Rev 2. But there are many who prefer the sound of the Rev2 models. I’ve never tried a Rev2 but there is a slight harshness to the sound of my Prophet that makes me wonder if the Rev2 might have a warmer tone (in a similar way to my preference for the Juno 6 over the 106). But those niggles aside it is a beautiful synth & a classic piece of synth history. I have put its individual character to use on several projects including the retro 80s-themed #rainbowsixsiege event #doktorscurse (see earlier Instagram post w/ some video of me recording the Prophet for this). New gear alert. A month or so ago I took delivery of a new piece of gear I’d put a deposit down on earlier this year: the sound techniques zr7064cs channel strip! Sound techniques, as an entity, goes back to 1964 (a lot of great stuff came around then, eh?) when they opened a studio in an old dairy building in Chelsea, London, they made their own console, built their own tape machines from ampex transport, and recorded Nick Drake, Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention amongst others. A new studio, Trident, started off with the consoles they bought from Sound Techniques. The Sound Techniques ‘A Range’. “Oh? You mean the trident a range?” Nope, those early records until like the early/mid 70s were tracked on the Sound Techniques A Range desk. You heard wrong. Bowie, Elton John, Queen, TRex, the Beatles. Those were Sound Techniques. Similarly, Elektra had Sound Techniques. The Doors? Yep. The new channel strip has the old feature, z-match, letting you find a place your mics prefer (my old stc 4038 loves the 60ohm position). Low end is smooth and full. Midrange is very useful and the treble range is incredible. Totally hear the ‘snappy’ top end of those early 70s snare drum recordings. Add to that, a top/mid cut that is interactive with the treble zone like a pultec does and you’re really set for some manipulation, should you desire (and it sounds so good, you may, even if not totally needed). This piece is from an initial run of rack pieces (they have a few new consoles and side cars out now as well) and it’s sold out but I believe more are being produced. I find this piece to be a lot of fun and a great compliment to everything else I use, tho I wish now I would have thought/had the finances to buy two to start ;). En tiempos donde nos hacen creer que todo tiene que ser rapido, 5 años pasaron desde que empece con este proyecto. Mucho tiempo, mucha investigacion y estudio lo hicieron posible. Sacar a la vida nuevamente (en estos tiempos) un ecualizador de estas caracteristicas me pone extremadamente orgulloso. Hoy mas que nunca, hacer las cosas bien. 20 valvulas en total, 4 bandas EQ de casi fase lineal. Lundahl transformers, Elma Rotary switches, etc. 6U de alto, 55 cm de profundidad. Klein&Hummel UE-100 fue el primer EQ Aleman de esta clase Luego Fairman TMEQ fue una version similar un poco mas reciente. Ovie TMQ-100 es basicamente un recreacion de K&H con pasos de 0.5dB de ganancia y la ganancia es solo positiva para este EQ. La etapa de amplificacion fue rediseñada y actualizada. Las frecuencias de cada filtro fueron calculadas nuevamente a gusto. Cada componente fue pensado para su uso optimo en el circuito. Es el ecualizador mas musical que escuche hasta el momento. Todo lo que hagas es musical y generalmente esta siempre bien. Esta mas cerca de ser un instrumento musical que a un equipo de mastering !
