Los sintetizadores e instrumentos electrónicos me convocan desde pequeño. Tengo el claro recuerdo de ser seducido por sus interfaces, morfología y -por supuesto - por sus posibilidades sonoras. Comencé explorando con software, en forma intuitiva y sin saber mucho qué era qué cosa (y siempre voy a defender ese enfoque irrespetuoso: hay que animarse a las cosas) y pude ingresar, hace ya algunos años, en el mundo del hardware, adquiriendo algunos instrumentos que hoy son el set up de mi estudio (Prophet 6, Moog, Digitakt, Drumbrute Ms20) y que están a su vez integrados con DAWS digitales y muchos otros instrumentos acústicos y mixtos. Y si uno es argentino y está interesado en los instrumentos electrónicos, a la larga, uno se conecta con Ernesto Romeo. Conocí a Ernesto en 2016 en una sesión para Canto Serpiente de @pommezinternacional , disco repleto de sintetizadores de todo tipo. A partir de ahí entablamos una amistad particular, que se intensificó en los últimos años: lo admiro mucho. Le discuto mucho también. Para mi esas discusiones son tesoros. Yo creo que nuestra diferencia fundamental es que él es roussoniano - es optimista en relación a la naturaleza moral del hombre salvaje - y yo soy hobbesiano, es decir, creo que el hombre es naturalmente peligroso y es la cultura la que lo redime. Todos los años hacemos un seminario juntos en la UNA que es una fiesta, el hijo raro entre la nerdeada modular de Ernesto y mi ñoñada musicológica. Para mi es un placer y un honor que él se prenda. #jonsstudiogear #7 Another iconic classic in my collection - the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5! The Prophet was a revolutionary synth release in 1978. The first fully programmable polyphonic synth. Proper patch memory! You could actually save sounds! To easily switch between up to 40 sounds at the touch of a button & to load in external patches (via tape) - as straightforward as this seems now it must have seemed like a radical step forward at the time. The Yamaha CS80 came out at roughly the same time & was a more powerful synth but (aside from sounding great) the patch memory & easy portability of the Prophet gave it a different angle that helped make it a hit. I have to confess that with patch memory being less of an issue for me (if I want to easily flick through sounds then I can do this to the nth degree in the computer - I look to analogue synths for their individuality & character) then the polysynths that I find myself turning to are the #oberheim Four Voice & Roland #juno 6 more often than the Prophet. The more primitive nature, independence between the voices & distinctive filter character of the Oberheim hold more charm for me; while the Juno is a simpler synth to work with quickly (& to my ears with a fuller tone). My Prophet 5 is a rev3.3 - the last model produced. This has the advantage of MIDI as standard & theoretically more reliable than a Rev 2. But there are many who prefer the sound of the Rev2 models. I’ve never tried a Rev2 but there is a slight harshness to the sound of my Prophet that makes me wonder if the Rev2 might have a warmer tone (in a similar way to my preference for the Juno 6 over the 106). But those niggles aside it is a beautiful synth & a classic piece of synth history. I have put its individual character to use on several projects including the retro 80s-themed #rainbowsixsiege event #doktorscurse (see earlier Instagram post w/ some video of me recording the Prophet for this). #jonsstudiogear #5 The ARP 2600! What an iconic monster of a synth! Going back to what I’ve mentioned in the previous posts about the origins of my interest in synths, and the motivation behind my collection, all being rooted in the 1970s music of my musical hero @herbiehancock… like the Oberheim, the ARP 2600 was always going to be central to that vision. It was a key element of Hancock’s music from the earliest beginnings of him using synths (e.g. the Sextant album, before Head Hunters). I’ve dreamed of owning one for years, and that finally came true last year with this beauty from @tonetweakers. It’s an amazing piece of early synth engineering (first introduced in 1971), and is one of the genuine classics. It has an amazing huge tone, which is given extra character by the built in mechanical spring reverb. It’s an unruly beast to tame - quite raw and full of character. The 2600 bridged the gap between huge modular synths that took up a room (like the ARP 2500) and new smaller, portable options like the Mini Moog (released the same year). There are some synths that I feel I know pretty fully, like the Oberheim Four Voice or Juno 6, and then some where I feel I have a lot more to discover and have only scratched the surface of what they can do. The 2600 is in the latter category (it took me about half a day when I first got it to work out how to get a sound out of it!). I’ve used it on the score for #wehunttogether, and as the basis for the theme for the @rainbow6game_us event #TheGrandLarceny, but I plan on delving much deeper into its possibilities in the future. Behringer and Korg have both released replicas recently, but this one’s the real deal. Been working on recreating some serum patches on the modular. The first one is one of my favorites “ such relaxation” hard to beat but I got close with the expressive detuning patch and just manually wiggling in the pitch LFOs. The second one was an attempt to get close to one of the “monster- growling-bass” type patches. To get close to the wavetable scanning effect I used some sequenced modulation of the wave shape on the @verboselectronics complex oscillator. Also used some fm from the modulation osc. the fm amount was also sequenced on the multistage. Still not quite there. Probably best to leave this task for the computer, although it’s definitely fun and challenging to try. #analogsynth #modularsynth - @alexepton on Instagram
