The storm is here now until the weekend and I really wanted to get across the Irish Sea before it hit but sadly and very frustratingly I’m still stuck in the middle of it which means we have an 8 hour sail to shore and I’ve been throwing up most of the way as the storm starts to set it. One thing you learn about the ocean is just like life, sometimes it can be calm, peaceful and tranquil and some days it can be rough, brutal and relentless. In the last 48 hours I’ve experienced both gifts from Mother Nature. I lördags lämnade en man den polska nordkusten med avsikt att paddla kajak till Karlskrona. En resa på cirka 330 kilometer. Ombord på kajaken har han proviant för 4 dygn samt utrustning för navigation, kompass, solpanel, nödsignaler, VHF-radio samt ett stabiliseringssystem till kajaken. Första dygnet går bra men på söndagen blir vädret något sämre än förutspått och vindriktningen är inte fördelaktig längre. Nu uppstår det också problem med navigationsutrustningen som slutar fungera som den ska. Den andra natten blir jobbig. Stabiliseringssystemet fungerar sämre än förväntat så någon sömn blir det inte. När det hunnit bli måndag har situationen blivit så besvärlig att mannen inser att han inte kommer att klara det. Han har missat Karlskrona och befinner sig nu sydost om Öland utan att själv veta om det. Kl. 13:50 uppfattar ett lastfartyg en nödsignal. Dom girar 180 grader och upptäcker mannen i kajaken. Sjö- och flygräddningscentralen JRCC blir informerad via mannens nödsändare och lastfartyget. Kl. 14:20 har lastfartyget plockat upp mannen som kort därefter förs till KBV 003 Amfitrite som anlänt till platsen. Väl ombord erbjuds mannen en dusch och han får torra kläder. En mindre fysisk undersökning görs och han uppvisar bra värden. Efter en kopp varmt te ringer han till sin fru. Han får sedan hjälp till färjan som tar honom tillbaka till Polen med en rad nya erfarenheter i bagaget. Han lär tänka sig för innan han påbörjar ett liknande företag i framtiden. One of the people dearest to my heart I’ve met in TV is @yassir_lester - we had been trying to cast “Making History” for a month, with some pretty well-known people, and it just didn’t seem right. Finally, @adam.pally said, “There’s a writer on The Carmichael Show” who is really funny I think could be good. Having been in a million writers rooms I though, “No, he’ll be terrible” but said, “Sure have him go into tape,” because I knew if I didn’t, Pally would keep bringing it up. The tape was hilarious but even funnier was this 30 second preamble Yassir created that was a whole kind of fuck your for the audition process. I was intrigued enough to bring him in. When Adam and Yassir auditioned together, they started improvising off script, which was of course enormously annoying and unwelcome. But it was also magical. I literally got goose bumps and knew we had to get Yassir. He’s already gone on to so many bigger things, and I’ll always be so proud of being linked to him in this way. Anyway, he agreed to do a guest star on United We Fall (ABC, 8 pm) tonight as an enormous favor to me. So watch it! Stripped away from all of my typical summer activities as travels, playing music, teaching and reuniting with friends and alumni around the world, family getaways, countless dinners with people we love (etc.), this summer felt like the movie “Groundhog Day”, where the main character was forced to relive the same day over and over, in order to better himself and creating different outcomes through self reflection and consequent self improvement. I started realizing that this global pandemic may have presented us with a similar opportunity to grow and it has personally forced me to make sense of my existence and choices by depriving me to what I thought made sense and gave purpose, pleasure and comfort in my own life. It was and still is gruesome at times, but it has also allowed me to truly empathize with the less fortunate people who actually lost all of their livelihood or even worse, people that lost their loved ones as a result of the virus and/or of the absurd racial murders we can’t afford to be silent about anymore. I’m not sure at all if today I am a better man, but what I now know is that every day since this pandemic hit, I have been presented with the opportunity to look at what I want and what I need, and truly understand the difference; thankfully, most days I am able to feel deeply grateful in my heart for being blessed with all I need even when I often desperately miss all I want. The smiles you see in these pictures are the consequence of that sentiment, when last week we had the unexpected opportunity to go for the weekend to Block Island for the first and last time during this surreal 2020 summer. Our oysters will slow down their respiration rate, meaning they will take in less nutrients and grow less quickly. By the time the water gets down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit the oysters will stop growing completely and go dormant for the winter. How are you switching up your haircare for the cooler months? 🍂 For me it’s all about bringing back moisture and smoothing the hair. I find dry hair an issue, that sometimes can lead to hair looking dull. So I start to use masks more often, along with leave-in conditioners in between. This way my hair is moisturised, but also has a healthy sheen. I also style my hair with hot tools a lot more. A blow-dry is a great way to smooth and add shine to the hair. When blowdrying I like to use mousses to add volume and oils to compliment a smooth blow dry. Like always I will be using a heat protect prior to any hot tool styling, as we have got to keep those locks looking and feeling healthy! Here are some of my Autumn must haves... • @moroccanoil_uk Leave in Treatment (Smells and feels incredible in the hair, it softens, smoothes and hydrates without weighing your hair down.) • @bumbleandbumbleuk Heat Protect/UV Protection Spray (I have used this religiously throughout the summer, and honestly it’s the best for all round protection. It covers you for hot tool styling as well as UV rays, which can cause colour to fade. Use on wet and dry hair, either before styling or as quick mist to protect once finished!) • @got2b Volumaniac Mousse (You want volume? Use this mousse. A little goes a long way, and once blow-dried in you’ll have full, voluminous locks that stay all day.) • @garnieruk 3-In-1 Hair Foods Mask (Another product that I have been loving throughout the summer, I use this multiple ways. Conditioner, leave in or mask. Each way makes the hair feel amazing, and doing the mask gives the hair an extra treat. They have an excellent range, to cater for all hair types and problems. When we started Rugged Seas we had this drive to shed a light on this industry, what goes into the daily life of a fisherman, and their community. Little did we know, at the Fisherman’s Forum in March, we would meet Captain Joe Nickerson’s family. We felt we connected with them for a reason... he fished in Dutch and Maine.. the similarities drew our families together. Since then we have watched Hayley, his daughter, raise awareness and money for the Maine Coast Fisherman’s Association...she is determined to turn this tragedy into something positive. If we have been able to keep his memory alive and tell his family’s story then as one fishing family to another, our mission has been accomplished. Yesterday, our team joined Julie Lassy from @americascupcharters and the incredible crew of the Intrepid for teambuilding event on a 12 meter sailboat on open waters off of Newport, Rhode Island. Once upon a time, when I was just a wee lad of 3, maybe 4 years old, I was obsessed with this song called “Baby Beluga” by #raffi who was a legend in my young eyes at the time. Aluah was a female, she was feisty but she let me dance with her. I don’t know when or how this happened but The Chef managed to enroll himself at a school. He couldn’t believe that there were zoom calls going on where people taught you all about the world and next thing I know he’s too busy to play Uno with me. Alaska is one of the more awesome places I’ve been to and I can’t wait to go back. I learned how to tell what year a plane was made and that refueling planes in flight takes finesse. Rode shotgun while Ty tried to give me a heart attack but drove like a pro. Hiked up a mountain and strolled on a glacier, watched Morgan cook bacon on a rock, shot a few children with air soft guns (they cheat btw) and ate a home cooked meal made by Momma Winterton. I’m gonna have to take @ty_907 skydiving or some shit on his next visit, to even attempt, to come close to not boring him to death 🤪. Today we had the pleasure to meet our customer that was saved by God’s grace with a little help from our jacket. Thank you for all of the positive thought and sentiments. I thought I would take the time to explain what happened. After roughly 1,500 miles of riding some of the most beautiful roads the USA has to offer, I had to start making moves to go home. “Riding the Tail of the Dragon” was a bucket list trip. I was looking forward to seeing Cyndie and the kids. When I left Deal’s Gap it started pouring rain. I cautiously rode about 50 miles of “ the Moonshiner 28” route in heavy winds and rain through twisty roads covered with water and leaves. The riding wasn’t bad because I was getting into the groove of my slow and sensible pace. Other than being soaked to the skin I was in good spirits. That is when I made the decision to bag the last leg oft the trip and head to MB. My gas light indicator switched on in Spartanburg, South Carolina. I stopped for food and gas. I decided for safety sake to have a sit down meal. I figured having a full stomach would keep me alert and the roads would dry up completely. This turned out to be a sensible move and when I finished dinner, everything appeared to be dry and wind free. Just before I headed on the highway I stopped to make sure my helmet strap was snug, and the rest of my bags and gear were in order. I put on my mellow mix on my iPhone, which was linked into my helmet and settled in for a straight long ride to MB. I was motivated and anxious to see everyone. However, because I was out at night in the country I maintained a sensible speed of 65 mph. When I ride at night, my right eye is scanning the shoulder for wildlife, and my left eye focuses on the road and rearview mirror. I saw no traffic behind me except for a single tractor-trailer truck about a half mile behind me. I put my attention with both eyes ahead of me on the road. This was the last ride detail I remember. Yesterday, minutes after the water clip we were on the way to an emergency animal clinic because maui had been cut badly by glass in the water and needed stitches :( Completely avoidable situation that us and sweet little innoncent puppies (and all of the other animals of course) would never have to face. Yesterday I took the very first copy of Pirate Stew outside in the warm windless Skye evening, to take photographs of it and me. I managed one before the midges sent me back inside. Oh the all-devouring midges of Skye. Here is a photo of me and my book. The midges are here too but they are too small to be seen in the photo. September marks 50 years since all my family except me emigrated to Australia. I wanted to stay at college studying to be a jewellery designer. No matter the outcome of these decisions and I have been very lucky, as all immigrants, and those who decide to stay know, your heart still hurts. To mark this momentous occasion I visited Portsmouth Royal Dockyard where my father spent many happy and fulfilling times as an RN officer. Shortly before leaving the Navy he was made MBE for bravery, leading a team to board a Spanish tanker that was ablaze in the Mediterranean and saving all lives.
