recently I’ve been struggling more and more with “eco-anxiety” and just feeling generally more and more disillusioned with the way our government is ignoring the immanent threat we’re facing. I truly cannot understand how anyone could simply just put aside all the science suggesting that we have x months, or x years to do something and how it doesn’t deeply bother them too. The one thing I am finding though is that every action I go to whether it’s big or small, I meet new people who make me feel a little bit more loved and a little bit more optimistic for my future. In August of 1995, the raid of a garment factory in El Monte revealed that 72 Thai nationals had been housed for up to seven years as indentured workers by a family-owned firm that required them to work over 18 hours a day, seven days per week, under threat of violence and retaliation. The case of El Monte became the first recognized case of modern-day slavery and exposed both the global phenomenon of human trafficking and the presence of trafficking nationally and even within our own communities. • This image shows the street curb just north of the of the driveway entrance to the compound which housed Thai workers, the location of which is detailed in a surveillance report filed in June of 1995. • The Museum of Social Justice, in partnership with the Thai Community Development Center, will exhibit: “Thai El Monte Garment Workers: The Return of Slavery and Trafficking in the Modern Era.” This exhibition tells the story of the case from the perspectives of the survivors, featuring their testimonies, images and maps of the compound, and other artifacts. #elmonte #thaicdc #humantrafficking #elmontegarmentworkers #museumofsocialjustice - @museumofsocialjustice on Instagram

𝗟𝗔 𝗕𝗟𝗠 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 I finally got my celluloid photos from the LA BLM protest I attended developed and scanned. I shot both film and digital, so I have many photos to share, but wanted to wait until I had these back to start. I’ll be sharing my photographs of the event over the next few days, and will make sure to denote if they were shot digitally or on celluloid in the description. These are photos from the June 3rd Protest and March. I had originally set out that day to drive around the greater LA area to photograph and document the escalating situation throughout the South Bay, Santa Monica, and Hollywood. I ended up in downtown and stayed to photograph the march there. I was very relieved to not have seen any violence or unrest, although at the end of the protest that day, as the curfew time drew near, it was slightly disconcerting to see the heavily armed police line up and prepare for a situation that, based of my experience there, was unlikely to escalate. Indigenous to Southeast Asia, kratom comes from the leaves of a tropical evergreen tree related to the coffee family. It has been used for centuries as a plant medicine by the natives who chew the leaves for energy as well as for its sedative and pain relieving properties. The multifaceted, medicinal leaf is becoming increasingly popular in the West for its potent painkilling and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its ability to boost energy, elevate mood, increase focus and relieve depression and anxiety. Depending on the dosage and the strain, kratom has wide reaching benefits and can work on many levels at once. In small doses, kratomis energizing and acts similarly to a stimulant like caffeine. In larger doses, kratomacts as an analgesic; its alkaloids interact with opioid receptors in the brain to decrease pain and produce sedation and pleasure. While studies are limited and science does not yet agree on whether or not this medicinal herb has potential risks or side effects; there is no denying that kratom has some powerful healing abilities. Pain Relief Kratom is essentially a natural opioid alternative. Its main pain relieving alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, bind to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, working to reduce chronic and acute pain. They also release enkephalins and endorphins, which suppress the pain signals. While they possess all the powerful pain killing properties of morphine and oxycodone, they don’t cause the negative side effects typically seen with chronic opioid therapy, such as respiratory failure. This is because kratom doesn’t connect to receptors that control the respiratory system. For me snowboarding has always been as much about travel as it has been about riding. Wherever you go, ski resorts are basically islands for rich people, so I always figured you might as well try and find out a bit about the world while dragging your boardbag behind you on the way to the mountains. - That’s how me, Nelson Pratt, @truetiler, @jamesmcphoto and @ewanwallace ended up going to Argentina in 2002, and found ourselves looking like frightened rabbits in the middle of a classic Argentine ‘Cacerolazo’ - a demonstration where crowds gather and bang pots and pans in protest - on our first night in Buenos Aires. - This one was a thousands-strong demonstration about the devaluation of the Argentine peso, which had basically wiped out the country’s savings and pensions overnight and brought the country out into the streets. - That trip was also the first time I really understood how good Nels was at snowboarding. On our second day in Las Lenas we built a jump with the world’s sketchiest run-in. Nelson’s warm up was a massive, casually stomped frontside 7, and things progressed from there. - I didn’t do too many trips with Nelson, but feel privileged I got to share this experience and a few more with him. For most of my life I have been very privileged to not have to deal with the supremacy of the police department because I lived in a wealthy neighborhood one of the top 50 safest places to live in the United States. It was not until I moved to Los Angeles a year ago... reality struck. People are racially profiled, falsely accused, arrested, jailed and killed each and every day by police globally. Police need to be policed. A change starts from within, these photos were taken the end of May, protests are still happening DAILY all over the United States and other parts of the world. •Post 3/13 of our @serpentineuk Takeover• Mauritanian filmmaker Med Hondo’s seminal ‘Soleil Ô (Oh, Sun!)’ was released in 1970. The film introduces a protagonist played by Guadeloupean actor Robert Liensol (also a lead character in Hondo’s West Indies’) who relocates to Paris, France convinced that he will settle into the comfortable life promised back home. On arrival, he realises quickly that bureaucratic indifference, unemployment and disenfranchisement, all residues of colonialism’s unceasing architecture, are core to migrant lives in France. Hondo’s experimental approach forms a scattering narrative in its exposure and critique of Western Capitalism moreover its relations to anti-Blackness. Both are equally relevant to our current moment as they were in the early 1960s.
