A moment in history we’ll never forget 🙌🏼 20 years ago today, we showcased our audio production to the world at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony. Events don’t come much bigger than this! Norwest took the event to a new level, setting benchmarks for international sporting ceremonies audio production. Not bad work from a guy who had only set the company up a few years’ prior as a one-man-band 💪🏼🔊 It was a BIG night and many big things happened after that. We also went on to deliver the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for Athens 2004, Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, London 2012 and Rio 2016. Whilst every event is special, we are honoured to have been involved in some truly Special Events. In 2005 I had the opportunity to speak on the phone with @alanmenken, and it was a call that changed my life in more ways than I can say: lessons were learned, questions were answered, and wisdom was imparted. From that conversation, many of my lifes most pivotal decisions were made, and his words are etched in my memory and continue to guide me today. But perhaps the biggest thing I learned from him was not anything he said, but rather what he did. He, a globally-acclaimed multi-Oscar and Grammy award-winning composer, took 30 minutes out of his day to talk to an unknown 20 year-old aspiring composition major from whom he was several degrees removed. During our conversation he was kind, forthright, and fully present, asking me questions and offering advice. The big lesson: always be generous with your time. Whatever measure of success youre fortunate enough to achieve, you will never be too big, nor will anyone else ever be too small. Alan Menken taught me that. IAN MC LAGAN & ROGER: 2014? Touring Beck’s acoustic oriented Morning Phase album. Smokey Hormel, our long time band member and all things fretted historian, of course knew Ian from I believe a Rick Rubin project they worked on together. He invited Ian down to this Austin City Limits performance. I had seen Ian’s “Bump Band” perform in Austin several times and had been as inspired by them as much as anything he had done w all of the greats he’d already been associated w in the past. starstruck is an understatement. In person he could not have made me feel more at ease as he was the literal fun-lovin, easy-goin’ cartoon character and epitome of the classic rock, British Blues-er ethos. We talked for hours and then we were both wisked away. He died within the year.
