Hello World🌍Croydon Calling,my father in law taught me not to get attached to stuff it’s just stuff, my father in law was charitable he never forgot the village he came from, built a well for the villagers and paid to get the large cemetery fenced off and helped many villagers with financial issues and hospital bills it’s fair to say he helped the village a lot, a few years ago we were in Morocco 🇲🇦 for the summer and one of the village elders came to see my father in law, my father in law asked if everything was ok as it’s a long journey and it was late, the village elder said all was well and the villagers wanted my father in law to visit them the following Friday with all the family as they had something to ask him but would not say what, so my father in law says inshallah which is God Willing, the following Friday we drove up in a convoy of five cars to the village, we were met by all the villagers kids and everyone I think there must have been about three hundred people gathered now remember these are poor farmers and they had Laid on such a feast for my father in law and the whole family there was my self my wife kids mother in law and brother in laws visiting from Italy 🇮🇹 with their family and the brother in law from Belgium 🇧🇪 and his family fair to say there was about 34 of us my father in laws children and their children, so we eat in this outdoor spaces surrounded by figs and olive groves a brilliant place which I still visit every year, then the village elder says to my father in law all the villagers have agreed they want to give your 1000 square meters of land as a thank you for all that you have done over many years for the villagers, now this is tricky in Arab and Moroccan culture it’s disrespectfully turn down a gift, so the gathering are waiting for my father in law to speak, and he thanks everyone present for their generosity and he says I accept then I thought what so much for stuff just being stuff and continues I accept two conditions that he chooses the location of the land and the size of the plot, at that time my view of my father in law changed, he said I don’t want 1000 square, (to be continued tomorrow night)#poetrywriter - @poetrydrive on Instagram

Granted, I have my best friend-husband here with me (and he is ALL the extrovert I need), but its been surprising how little Ive missed the physical presence of other people and how actually relieved I was to be able to mark off dozens of volunteer and entertainment commitments from my calendar. I DO miss being able to jump on a plane to see my grandkids in Maine and my granddog in L.A., but with FaceTime and Zoom, were staying in touch, and knowing everyone is safe is comforting. Its been nice to find out that Im OK with a simpler life! 😊 [John] Sheltering in place has LITERALLY changed my perspective. I find that I miss seeing the lower half of peoples faces since we are wearing masks. I am used to being able to assess the patients frame of mind as soon as I enter the exam room (using the whole face) so I can make statements that are most likely to result in reassurance to the patient. I looked up the 21 emotional expressions of the human face that are generally agreed on by Psychologists and found that 17 or 18 of them are characterized mostly by the positions of muscles around the mouth, jaw, and cheeks. Only a handful require the forehead. Thus we have a lot to communicate using some other method. I realized that the patients cant see my face either, so they dont know what I am thinking. Whats really weird is to see a new patient with masks. Anyway, I have had to depend more on the tone of voice, body language, sitting position, and arm movements to figure out the level of a patients discomfort. How about that? - @henrikmeng on Instagram

You know those people…when you’re with them you can 100% be yourself. You feel so understood and you know they feel understood by you. I’m lucky to have had a few of those in my lifetime. Michael was one of them. He was my high school gay boyfriend. We had a special relationship I haven’t quite had before or since. He lived in my room my last year of high school. We would stay up all night talking and laughing. He slept with this super loud fan right next to his head which annoyed me at first but I get accustomed to it. To this day I have a hard time sleeping without white noise. We haven’t been in daily contact for over a decade. I think of him often. I always will. Whenever I hear 90s deep house, Maroon 5 and Dave Mathews I think of him dancing. He liked cheeseburgers with just ketchup. He smoked too much sometimes. He made me laugh so hard! The party was way more fun if Michael was there. He approved of eccentric fashion choices. He loved his grandma the most. He gave really great hugs, the real ones where you get squeezed and picked off the ground. Those people….where you can hang and both be authentically you…stick with them. Not much of the rest matters. Michael was worried he’d be forgotten so I’m making sure that’s not happening because we all know how unforgettable he was. My Dad was a tough guy...VERY rough around the edges. I always gave him a pass because no matter what I always saw his heart. ❤️ It was under all that chaos of his childhood, under all that pressure of providing for his wife and 11 children. The first time he told me he loved me was on my (1st) wedding day as he lifted my veil. I always knew he did though✨ I wondered in that moment if his parents ever told him they loved him? Last summer he came to stay with us for a bit. It was then I noticed the tremendous change in him. I knew his time was coming. 😢 One afternoon I took him shopping for new clothes and he went OFF, LOUD in public on someone who “did him wrong” in the past. I calmly escorted him out of the store. 🤦♀️ When we were back home I tried to talk to him. I didn’t want him to leave this lifetime with such anger in his heart. I tried to explain to him that old way of thinking doesn’t work anymore. Maybe back in the day in Brooklyn it did but perhaps he can just let it go, forgive and be at peace with it. He yelled at me and told me I was naïve...then he told me to make sure the pasta I was making him was al dente. 🤷♀️ I don’t know why I’m sharing so much. Maybe it’s because of all the hate that’s going on in the world right now? I wish we can all just soften our hearts and be kind to one another. It’s been two months now since he left us. I bet he understands now what I was trying to tell him. 🙏 I’m hoping the new world that’s emerging will have us ALL leading with love, kindness and emotional intelligence...even those tough guys from Brooklyn. When Pete and I met way back at Xmas in 1991, there were many - including my sweet, protective mum - who said we wouldn’t last. Those voices only got louder when we walked down the aisle a ridiculously short nine months later on the 26th September 1992 (yes, that’s a very young us on the left). Well, here we are, an old married couple, three beautiful kids and exactly 28 years later, still muddling through, still holding hands, still the first ones we want to confide in, still making each other laugh, still pushing each other, still talking, questioning, encouraging, supporting, trusting, forgiving, challenging (and yes, arguing), and still defying those who thought we wouldn’t make it (and to be honest, there were more than a few days when neither did we🤪)! Somehow though, it all just works. But it does also take a supportive village of wonderful friends and family to get you through the ups and downs...and three years ago we invited them all to dinner on our 25th anniversary to say thank you...and surprise them by renewing our vows (that’s the pic on the right). This time, it was with our eyes wide open to what being married to each other really means. It ain’t perfect, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. So here’s to our beautiful supportive village. Sometimes it’s easier to make a point with a story so I will tell you one. This is my dad and my othermom, Bonnie (she hated the word stepmother). They were just about the truest love that ever was. Bonnie was a force of nature. She did all the stuff that you’re supposed to do in America. She pulled herself out of poverty in rural Kentucky through education and hard work. She became a community leader, an accomplished writer, teacher, radio host, CEO of her own company. She was independent and funny. She made a beautiful life out of very little and she helped other people without being asked. She put me through school like I was her own kid. But when she got sick, the cost of health insurance and medication skyrocketed. She was unable to work and not old enough to draw her pension. The government demanded enormous amounts of tax money when there was no income. Her medication was thousands of dollars a month. Her health insurance skyrocketed. My dad had to give up his insurance to pay for hers. Eventually we lost literally everything. It was almost overnight. All her savings. We even lost our home. My dad had move to a new city with a few personal belongings and almost no money when she eventually died. Today everything is ok. My dad is safe and taken care of but we never got our house back. The government took everything they had. I was reading last night when the news broke about Trump not paying taxes most years. It really hit me hard because I know the real world situations that come out of the ideas he’s pushing. Donald Trump paid $750 dollars in federal income tax and wants to take away your healthcare on day one of 2021. He thinks he’s too rich to pay his share but people like my family should pay it all and have their lives torn up and thrown away if they get sick and can’t foot the bill. I wouldn’t wish what happened to my family on anyone, but Donald Trump wishes it on all of you. We have to vote. We have to win. No one should lose their home because of medical bills. Deve ter casado comigo, pacientemente, umas 11 vezes. Durante os 10 primeiros anos da carreira de atriz ( e foram duros esses anos) eu ia almoçar na casa dele e ele sempre dava um jeito de pedir p/ ver meu anel e deixar uma nota de 50 reais na minha mão. “Uma onça” dizia. Esse dinheiro me ajudou tanto, ele Nem imagina. Era um dinheiro com gosto de amor. João da Cruz Vicente de Azevedo levou toda a sua família p/ viajar, jantar, p/ a ópera, o museu, sempre com um bom humor infindável e a curiosidade de um gato. A pandemia foi dura c/ ele, c/ o isolamento e as atividades suspensas. Sua luz foi se apagando aos poucos. Sexta passada almocei com ele e minha avó. E qdo achei que ele já não se interessava por mais nada, ele me surpreendeu c/ uma pergunta e o brilho nos olhos. Ontem ele se foi. E além da tristeza imensa que sinto no peito, uma descarga de gratidão circula pelo meu corpo. P/ mim, o mundo sempre foi um lugar menos perigoso por Meu avô estar nele comigo. Vou sentir saudade durante todo tempo que eu viver, Mas desejo que ele descanse em paz e encontre seus outros queridos que já se foram. Obrigada vovô! My Mamaw has been living on this Earth for 88 years now!! June 10, 2009 11 years ago today I lost my Dad to cancer. I wanted to quote his obit “A kind and gentle soul, Alan took seriously the charge that to save a life is to save the world. He lovingly supported people in need, including new Americans and those who could not negotiate the legal system on their own. He vigorously supported organizations, including Legal Aid and the ACLU” I am missing so much during this time and continuously remind myself to keep educating myself and to make a difference which is how we were raised. I miss his warmth, his humor, his brain, his soul, his ability to not lose his temper, his thoughtfulness, him constantly making me laugh and his absolute adoration of his wife his kids and grandchildren and so much more. Our rock and foundation to the past, to the family legacy and most of all, to Nana. After 66 years of marriage I wasn’t sure how you would fare living alone. You not only persevered, but you were happy, jovial, and active everyday with a goal to LIVE. In the yard trimming weeds and making morning mass everyday. For four years straight, we spoke and shared our Wednesday evenings together. I knew you’d be waiting because the phone wouldn’t ring twice and you’d answer “friendly voice!”. We’d chat and talk about your dinner that day, what you were working on, and always some family history. I made sure to ask ya tough questions sometimes. Most the time I would just listen and admire your loving memories of honeymooning in Miami Beach or your high school football days. Most impressive was your acute memory and attention to detail at 96. In your own famous words “you always made Wednesdays brighter”. Im so lucky to have been able to share a life as your grandson. From WWII aircraft carriers, to Saturn V rocket boosters, you were truly an inspiration. Your patriotism and love for your country wore off on all of us. Papa you were my favorite cartoonist and the penpal I always wanted. What really stung the most was hearing my last post card made it to ya. ( Me and Nana...age four, Jordan) As a Jordanian-Texan raised in both countries with secularism & cultural Islam, I never struggled with my place as an atheist in the family. It was a fluid experience. My spiritually devout grandmother was the first woman in Amman to get her driver’s license, later driving into Jerusalem in midst of 1967 war to rescue my aunt and her cousins from their boarding school...and a natural feminist. She was the only one of her sisters who did not wear hijab. It never mattered in our house, it was always a personal choice. The Western preoccupation with hijab has always irritated me. Its also the easiest manifestation of discrimination. In some countries of Europe, that means legislatively and an almost casual racism. It seems Islamophobia is the one taboo that is allowed in polite company. Working in France for this chapter of the NOOR Islamophobia was not easy to access...but it is an important story and I am proud of what the collaboration fostered. Inspiring French Muslim women in this project...and what inspired me as always inspires me when documenting human rights is my nana....this one is for you. Allah Yirhamha. My Grandpa was a kind and gentle man. He was hard working, supportive and loving. He opened up his home to anyone who needed help. He was always calm even when things were chaotic. I spent a lot of time in my grandparents’ house growing up and it was always a safe place. The first drum set I ever played was at their house and I spent everyday after school playing it. Not once did he ever come out into the garage and ask me to quiet down. His health had been deteriorating for years, with his mobility and speaking ability taking the biggest hits. When Sam and I got engaged, we were so worried that he wouldn’t be able to make the trip out for our wedding. He made sure he was out there for it and he had a great time. On Wednesday September 4th my Grandpa passed away. On Saturday he was laid to rest.
