Today, we reflect on the 100th Anniversary of Womens Suffrage. To commemorate this important event, Bowne House has published an article about a long line of strong, independent-minded women in the Bowne & Parsons families who lived in the home since 1661. They are remembered for their significant social and civic contributions to the Flushing and greater New York City communities. Additional information about Bowne & Parsons women can be found in a slideshow entitled On the Path to Freedom, prepared for our Juneteenth celebration and available on our website. To read the article and view the slideshow, click on the link in bio. Image: Bertha Parsons working at Mayor Walter Bowne’s secretary desk circa 1940, seated in a Parsons family Chippendale chair. Have you heard about the legendary Los Angeles nightspot called Club Alabam? It was located at 4215 Central Avenue and if buildings could tell stories, it would say that Alabam was the center of the LA jazz scene in the 1930s and 1940s. Read more about the club that hosted Lady Day countless times via the link in bio. - @billieholidayofficial on Instagram

#TBT My name is Patricia Hill Collins. I was born on May 1st, 1948 in Philadelphia. I grew up during the Civil Rights Movement. I received a Bachelors Degree from Brandeis University and a Masters Degree from Harvard University. Growing up as an African American I had to hide away from painful daily assaults and I felt lesser than other races due to my skin color and race. I never had it easy and I was determined to help change the way people look at Black women. I am focused on understanding how African American male and female youths experiences with social issues of education, unemployment, popular culture and political activism articulate with global phenomena, specifically, complex social inequalities, global capitalist development, transnationalism, and political activism. #blackfeminist 🌼 - @collinspatriciahill on Instagram

📸:Marilyn Monroe in February 1954. Marilyn Monroe traveled to Korea to entertain the American Troops. There was over 100,000 Troops over the 4 days watching our beautiful mama. Like we know, this was Marilyns highlight on her life and she was saying on this tour that was the best what ever happened to me and Im never felt like a star before in my heart. It was so wonderful to look down and see fellow smiling at me. There was so cold and rainy day, but this did not bother her at all. And she also saying :The peak of my life was singing there for the soldiers. I was on an outdoor stage. It was cold, but I swear to you that I had never felt so good. “There were seventeen thousand soldiers in front of me and they were all yelling at me at the top of their lungs. I stood smiling at them. It had started snowing. But I felt as warm as if I were standing in a bright sun… I’ve always been frightened by an audience - any audience. My stomach pounds, my head gets dizzy and I’m sure my voice has left me. But standing in the snowfall facing these yelling soldiers, I felt for the first time in my life no fear of anything. I felt only happy.” —Marilyn Monroe on her time with Korea and singing the troops. #MarilynMonroe #marilynette #marilynettes #oldhollywoodglam #oldglamour #oldglam #icon #iconic #legend #legendneverdie #keepmarilynalive #welovemarilyn #fanforlife #fifties #1954 #1954s #50s #50style #aesthetic #aesthetictumblr #classichollywood #actor #actress #goodactress #oneandonly #blondebombshell #korea #troops #fypage #lovely - @lovelynormajean on Instagram

#MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. This Gender Equity Week explore the stories of other women who pushed boundaries and broke the glass ceiling on our Lady Action online tour. The Black Swan, Miami 1990 (Photographer: Luis Castañeda) From my journal: Today I am grateful to my ancestors for using their faith in God/Universe/Light to create a new reality for themselves so that their children’s children could be free. I am grateful to them for expanding their minds and always dreaming. I am grateful for the blueprint they created & passed down that frees me from the confines built to keep me down. May all people continue to expand their present purview and imagine more for those to come. We deserve to be seen. We deserve freedom, nothing less. #Legacy 🙏🏾😌 - @rebeccagiralde on Instagram

- My Dad living the life - Hong Kong 1966

This is my grandmother in 1950s Mauritius. For a black woman there at the time, access to education was a real struggle. My mother worked really hard to access a French high school based on merit, but migrating to France in the 1980s it was equally difficult to find a qualified profession. Despite this, my mother never taught me to fear any failure or rejection based on my origins or skin colour. Third generation and I am lucky enough to be one of the very few members of the mixed race and POC community at the Royal College of Art Fashion Masters program. Once I asked the Head of Marketing from a well-known British fashion institution at a diversity-oriented talk if there was anything done to increase the number of POC in Fashion and Design schools. It is apalling to think that, when the fashion industry has embraced diversity on the catwalk, the reality is far from being mirrored backstage. . There arent small diversity issues, the representation of all origins in fashion is a guarantee of cultural wealth, creativity and original individuals who share their specific experiences. If changes are made at this level, it will impact everything else. . Maybe you will have to work harder, with more dedication and perseverance, but drive does not have a colour so dont let others or institutions decide for you. . Tales of the Archives- Pearl City 🍍”Old Time Fun”. 📻 By the 1930s-50s, most Pearl City residents were employed in August Butts green bean fields which once covered much of what is now “West Boca.” It was a hard life and even the children worked in the fields during harvest time. Many Pearl City residents also lacked running water and electricity; things we take for granted today. Nonetheless, they knew how to enjoy themselves. Walter Dolphus recalled: “Well, the kids always played ball; and I never forget years ago of a marble range . . . was right in the center of Dixie Highway, and now you can’t even walk across it. A car would pass by probably every four or five hours. So that’s where we used to make up our marble range, right in the middle of Dixie Highway between 11th and 12th Streets. Right in the middle of Dixie Highway.” Amos Jackson had this memory: “We used to celebrate the 20th of May here [that is Florida’s “Emancipation Day”]. That’s the day that we were told that the slaves were freed. … The 20th of May was a big day to us. We’d have big baseball games, picnics on the beach and Collin Spain used to carry his juke box, or piccolo as we called it, on the beach; and he had a generator, and they called it a dynamo at the time, that would provide the electrical service for the box. We used to have music on the beach, swimming, ice cream, and sandwiches. Later on in the day we would have baseball games.” Irene Demery Carswell recalled the pleasures of a box supper: “Well this is boxes that the ladies would fix with food, and the men would buy these boxes. This was one of the recreational parties that they had. The men would buy the box maybe for fifty cents or seventy-five cents at the most. And then, for instance, if I made a box and you liked my box, I had this box all decorated with crepe paper, etc. And sometimes there’d be big boxes and little boxes, and they had fried chicken and potato salad and maybe some collard greens, or some homemade rolls, or maybe made a cake. You put enough for two in the box. For instance if you bought my box, you and I would sit and eat whether we were married or not. #continuedincomments - @bocahistory on Instagram

Legacy.  Because of them I’m here.   This is my Aunt Mildred putting my Nana’s wedding veil on.  Look at that sisterhood.  Oh my heart. Legacy is not only what we leave but acknowledging what is left for us. I tell our students weekly that I can put together an incredible curriculum and the most amazing teachers for them, but what will you do with it? This is what I’ve been asking myself since Aunt Mildred’s transition.  What will I now do with what I’ve been given. You may be thinking to yourself, but Robert I haven’t been given much. If you’re reading this you’ve already got two things many people didn’t wake up with - eyesight and breath.  Even now in the midst of this uncertainty you have more than you realize if you will only give yourself permission to be grateful for it. Could I encourage you to take 30 seconds to close your eyes and focus on your breath and this incredible body thats been holding you up through the past 6 months? Was last week hurtful and tearful?  My goodness yes.  But more than anything it reminded me who I am, what I’ve been given, and why I’m here. I can’t stop. I won’t stop. They’ve left me too much. Continue the legacy laid before you friend. More than ever we need your story.  More than ever we need your vision.  And more than ever we need you to breathe life into what I believe are still our best days ahead of us. It absolutely won’t be easy, but I’m making a commitment to doing it and am hoping you will do the same. Will you join me? - @sirroberttakespics on Instagram
