In 1975, as a suicidally depressed 21 year old, I took LSD for the first time at a party. This was definitely not the protocol recommended by psychedelic therapists, but I didn’t know anything about that. Nevertheless, sitting with my physical eyes closed, my inner eye moved through a beautiful spiralic tunnel. The walls of the tunnel seemed like a living iridescent mother-of-pearl, and it felt like a spiritual rebirth canal. I was in the darkness, spiraling toward the light. The Light was God, infinite love and wisdom at the core of all being and reality. I had met the Ultimate Mystery and it gave me a reason to live. The curling space going from black to grey to white suggested the resolution of all polarities as the opposites found a way of becoming each other. My artistic rendering of this event was titled the Polar Unity Spiral. Soon after this I changed my name to Grey as a way of bringing the opposites together. (It was Allyson’s party, we fell in love and have been together ever since! )⠀ ⠀ Our mind uses words to polarize, differentiate, and categorize. We separate the world into polarities: poor and wealthy, dark and light, female and male, self and other, matter and spirit. Our words describe a dualistic world, defining and limiting our concepts of self. I am a certain race and nationality. I am a certain age and earn a certain amount of money. I wear my hair a certain way and wear certain clothes. These defining characteristics are only a partial aspect of who we are, a fraction of our true identity. If we could transcend our “mind forged manacles” as Blake called them and see the light of our true natures, we would become a world tribe of humanity, All One united to save our earthly life web.⠀ ⠀ Since medium Grey has no opposite, it represents non-duality to me, a non-polarized state of being. #OTD in 1920 Scottish painter, designer and musician Alan Davie was born. Helen Kapp, a former Director of Wakefield Art Gallery, gave the painter his first retrospective exhibition in 1958. The Arts Review reported: ‘Once again Wakefield has had the courage of progressive convictions.’ During winter 2019/20, we presented a major exhibition showing Davies early work alongside David Hockneys paintings and work on paper. In the face the whole universe becomes manifest.”✨ #AlexeiJawlensky’s preference for the human, preferably female head is evident in his early portraits, and in the mystical and abstract heads that occupied much of his creative life. Today is almost 60 years from the passing of a modern art giant of the last century, #GeorgesBraque. Braque had two great themes in his work, still life and interiors. And it’s the latter that constitutes the topic of his last iconic series of paintings, The Studio Paintings. When working with a complicated interior, Braque would start from an idea that soon took shape on the canvas. But then, he would say, as I go on working, the picture itself takes over. There is a struggle between the idea -- the picture as preconceived in advance -- and the picture that fights for its own life.
