The Lone Catholic! Back in the 1800s, Bangalore Cantonment had six churches of which five were Protestant, leaving St Patricks Church as the sole Catholic establishment. While the other churches -- St Marks Cathedral (built 1812), Holy Trinity Church (1851), St Andrews (1866), East Parade Church (1865) and All Saints Church (1870) -- were built with the help of the British administration for the largely Protestant soldiers hailing from Wales, Scotland and old England; the Catholic soldiers drafted from Ireland had found themselves at a loss. And, so they pooled in money and in 1841 constructed St Patricks Church, named after the patron saint of Ireland. Though the project was conceived in 1830s, it took nearly a decade before it took shape as Irish Catholic soldiers faced prejudice of their disapproving Protestant British higher-ups. But once built, contributions poured in - and there were additions to the church such as beautiful stained glass windows, lattices, steeples, a belfry and a church organ. In the 19th century, St Patricks Day celebrations in March were a blitz of green and silver as church attendees took to the street for parades and a fete. St. James Church was built by Col. James Skinner in 1823. In 1988, INTACH Delhi Chapter was approached by the Church Committee who had no financial resources to restore the church. With sheer determination to see the process through, INTACH mobilized resources and involved agencies such as Govt. of NCT of Delhi, HM Queen Elizabeth II, British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia, Indian Army Regiment of Skinners Horse (1st Horse), INTACH UK Trust, @britishcouncil, @iccrom_official to undertake the conservation work. By 1999, the project was competed wherein major elements of the #conservation were the #restoration of the cracks in the dome, addressing issues of extensive seepage and badly damaged stained glass windows. Nel corso della permanenza a Firenze lUrbinate ebbe loccasione di studiare le opere dei grandi maestri attivi in città e si procurò le commissioni di alcune facoltose famiglie di mercanti. Vasari ne Le Vite riporta che questa tavola gli venne richiesta in occasione dello sposalizio fra Lorenzo Nasi e Sandra di Matteo Canigiani, celebrato il 23 febbraio del 1506. Nel 1547 la casa della famiglia Nasi fu travolta da una frana, e nello schianto lopera si ruppe in diciassette frammenti, i quali, una volta raccolti, furono affidati probabilmente a Michele di Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio che si occupò del restauro. Ignota rimane la sua sorte fino agli anni 1646-47, quando risulta registrata negli inventari della collezione appartenente al Cardinal Giovan Carlo de’ Medici. ——— Raffaello fu abile nel delineare figure caratterizzate da una bellezza ideale, armoniose e perfette nella loro semplicità, ma anche vitali e dinamiche per l’intenso scambio di sguardi e di gesti che le lega, nonché per la varietà aggraziata delle espressioni, rese ancor più naturali dallo sfumato leonardesco, impiegato anche per dissolvere il paesaggio all’orizzonte nell’atmosfera. Oggi vi mostriamo la pala di Martino di Bartolomeo di Biagio, (Siena, 1365/1370 - prima del 26 aprile 1435), Matrimonio mistico di Santa Caterina dAlessandria, con donatore, tempera e oro su tavola. Iscrizione: MCCCCIIII aprile fu il mese preghiamo Dio per chi fa le spese [aprile 1404 (calendario pisano, calendario gregoriano 1403) è stato il mese in cui preghiamo Dio per colui che paga le spese]; liscrizione è ora difficile da leggere ma è stata registrata da Da Morrona. Provenienza: Pisa, Convento di San Domenico; Pisa, Camposanto Monumentale (1810); Pisa, Museo Civico (1906), poi Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, dal 1949. Raffigura il Matrimonio Mistico di Santa Caterina dAlessandria secondo liconografia prevalente dellultimo quarto del XIV secolo, che mostra la santa che si unisce in matrimonio con Gesù Bambino. La Vergine incoraggia il matrimonio, attirando il braccio di Caterina verso suo figlio in un grazioso gioco di gesti. La giovane principessa è vista di profilo, inginocchiata su un grande frammento della ruota dentata che simboleggia il suo martirio.
