It highlights their contribution while at the same time calling for action. These are the people that make our city move, the people that care for us, these are the people that contribute socially, culturally and economically to the nation. They are part of this “American Experiment”, just like all the waves of immigration that came before them. In the year 2020, where hindsight should not be clearer, it is amazing to me that we must continue to ask ourselves…how it is that minorities today still have to suffer the same injustices of the minorities of the past. As an artist, I am committed to bringing attention to social issues that need to be addressed. The large-scale works that I have created around the world all convey that we need to come together to make the world a better place. The size of my large-scale works is directly related to the importance of the theme. This artwork “Somos La Luz” strives to give deeper meaning to the loss of each life, it strives to make evident the importance of every life as well as to value the amazing contribution of migrant people. I am honored to have an amazing team helping me to create this 40,000 sq ft land art mural Memorial. Tourism represents the Greater Palm Springs area’s number one industry. In 2019 alone, visitor spending was over $5.9 billion and supported over 53,000 jobs. When the coronavirus hit this spring, it represented a devastating impact on the local economy, forcing area hotels and outdoor attractions like the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells and the Living Desert to cease operations for nearly three months. Now, both have reopened and are excited to welcome back travelers who have been cooped up inside for months and are eager to once again return to the desert oasis. “I can’t imagine anything more important right now than getting people back to the resort,” said Jason Baer, the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Regency. “Coming out and having an opportunity to be away from people and breathe in fresh air just changes your perspective and gets guests to feeling more normal.” The nine cities represented in the Greater Palm Springs area are hopeful that the future is bright.
