Meet Natasha, a Black woman struggling to find an African Caribbean egg donor. As she try’s to find out why it’s so difficult, I was privileged to speak with her about the cultural silence in some BAME communities surrounding infertility and childlessness. Shes had four unsuccessful rounds of IVF and doctors have told her that its highly unlikely shell be able to use her own eggs. She needs an egg donor but her heritage is Caribbean and she can’t find anyone suitable. Natasha wants to find out why it’s so difficult to source a non-white egg donor and why there is such a taboo around egg donation within the black community. Natasha talks with producer Ben Carter about her struggles as she embarks on a journey to try and find some answers. Es cierto, lo que hago llega a unas pocas personas, es lo que tiene el crear y transmitir sin tener la ayuda de padrinxs, ni dinero para publicidad. Mi mensaje, mis obras llegan al alma de quien quien se deja tocar, de quien se interesa, llega y trasciende hasta donde cada ser lo permite y lo comparte, sin embargo yo no soy la única ni es algo especial que esto suceda la mayoría de lxs artistas creamos y compartimos nuestras obras, nos dejamos la piel, nos atrevemos a luchar por poder vivir de lo que nos llena, invertimos en formarnos, en nuestros equipos de trabajo en el arte, en lo que somos y queremos ser, pero nuestros resultados no alcanzan, no llegan a todas las personas, y se nota, se nota el vacío, el vacío en el estomago por comer lo justo durante la semana, porque estas apostando por ti, por tu carrera, se nota el hambre de crear y querer enseñar tus obras pero también se nota el hambre en los bolsillos, en la nevera, se agudizan los nervios de no saber si llegaras a fin de mes y dudas de si lo que haces vale la pena aunque sepas y sientas que si no haces lo que te llena nada tiene sentido, dudas y crees que eres tan prescindible, por instantes crees que el ser artista es ser esa persona que acabara con sus sueños rotos y trucados sin nada que ofrecer, pero no, eso no es cierto tenemos tanto que ofrecer que si, duele, pero nuestra fuerza erradica en transformar todo lo que nos sucede en arte asi que debemos abrazar toda esta sensación de caos y crear pues aun con hambre y con los bolsillos en quiebra, tenemos que creer en nosotrxs, tenemos que levantarnos tantas o mas veces que nos caigamos y crear, por que? Porque somos dueñxs de nuestra vida, y elegimos nuestra carrera, esta de conmover almas de crear sensaciones a través de nosotrxs, a través de la música, de la danza, de la escritura, de la pintura, de la fotografía y de la interpretación. Somos seres necesarios, nos necesitan ahora, hoy por hoy y mas que nunca pues se necesita de las artes para cambiar las energías, para desahogarnos, para olvidar, para re conectarnos y renovarnos. ¿De verdad seguimos subestimando el arte y a lxs artistas?si es asi, nada hemos aprendido en cuarentena. - @bbren_da on Instagram

But also - Saaiqa is a writer, multi-disciplinary artist, and visual storyteller; engaging with photography, installation, mixed media-based works and is also pursuing documentary and film-making. She would describe her work to be - Ephemeral. Transcendent. Gritty. Honest. Intimate. Poetic. Melancholic. Confrontational. Introspective. Visceral. Cinematic. Experiential. Subversive _ Githan Coopoo is a self-taught Jewelry Designer who saw the world in earrings. Working exclusively with clay as their base medium Coopoo’s originally focused on volume, opulence and fragility. The designers work has recently moved away from these themes and aligned more so with their own experiences and thoughts about queer love and sex. This departure also saw a shift away from making jewelry, to the production of larger scale works – predominantly vases with sassy handles and even sassier messages painted across their facades. Pre – COVID -19, Coopoo could be found conducting research in bars across Cape Town, performing fabulousness and looking for men to fall in love with.
