**TRIP REPORT** UNGARIE June 2019 Grey #mistletoe is a feature of this site and it was in full flower, attracting numerous honeyeaters. Windy conditions favour catching larger birds and our trainees got a lot of valuable experience with handling a series of challenging species including Noisy Miners (18), Blue-faced Honeyeaters (4), Apostlebirds (2), Eastern Rosellas (2), Bluebonnets (3) and a snappy Pied Butcherbird. A male Variegated (purple-backed) Fairy-wren and a surprise Brown Honeyeater provided some relief. Pictures by Richard Allen - Blue Bonnet parrot male and female (note white underwing bar), blue faced honeyeater and apostlebird. Most interesting bird for the day went to a lone Red-winged Parrot (seen but not caught), a new species for the site, bringing our total to 105. - @absabirds on Instagram

Few garden birds are more exquisite than the Long-Tailed Tit. But for their disproportionately long tails, which slightly exceed the length of the rest of their bodies, these birds are truly tiny. At 9g they weigh less than a £1 coin. DID YOU KNOW : Long-Tailed Tits live short lives of only 2 to 3 years. Long-tailed tits have one of the highest nest failure rates among garden bird species. However, despite this disconcerting fact, it is interesting to observe that Long-tailed tits have a habit of not re-nesting. Instead, they will become what are known as “Helpers”; supporters of a nest belonging to another pair of birds, a behaviour known as co-operative breeding. (Approximately 50% of nests have one or more helpers). This altruistic behaviour pertains to a fitness advantage, particularly if it is related to offspring that is supported by the helper. Its time for another #WildlifeWednesday spotlight from @your_wild_ohio. Today we feature the state bird - the Northern Cardinal. This bird is well known for its rich, distinctive call. The cardinals song is usually a repetition of short whistled phrases with some notes run together; for instance: What-cheer-cheer-cheer, or Who-it, who-it, who-it, or Birdy, birdy, birdy. There is also a sharp clink sound the bird makes as a call note. Cardinals can usually be found singing near the top of the tallest tree in their territory. The male cardinal is an unmistakable brilliant red with black facial markings and a crested head. Females also have a head crest, but overall are duller in coloration. Female cardinals are a grayish, brown-red with true red only on their wings, tail, and crest. The red bill is also a distinguishing characteristic. As with many other species of birds, the muted appearance makes the female cardinal less conspicuous to predators when nesting. It’s not the direct impact of these events that hurt the birds, it’s the habitat and food loss that occurs afterward that is so harmful. -With wildfires, birds need the most help during and after the fire because of depleted resources. Even if a location isn’t directly impacted by fire, it can accommodate birds fleeing nearby fires. -With hurricanes, birds need the most help before the storm so they can prepare to ride it out. 🐦 -The key components to help birds in either situation is offering food, water, shelter, and places to raise young. Offer diverse food like nectar, suet, Bark Butter, mealworms and seed blends. You can also create a native habitat that includes brush piles, fresh water, diverse foods, and multiple types of feeders. The first one... Today’s two-fer shares the same male Northern Cardinal and his reflection but the first one is a better composition. I was using my 300mm f/2.8 lens coupled with a 1.4x extender, hoping for warblers and other tiny birds. I noticed that this bird and his reflection barely fit into the frame. When he cocked his head, it left just enough room above his head and below his reflection. 🦜Estas coloridas aves llamadas Loros Tricahue habitaban gran parte del territorio chileno, desde Atacama hasta Valdivia. Hoy su territorio se limita a solo dos áreas, en la zona central norte y sur. . En 1990 esta especie llegó al borde de la extinción, al contar con alrededor de 104 ejemplares registrados por Conaf en la cuenca del Río Cipreses. Sin embargo, los Tricahue lograron recuperarse y vencer su desaparición. . Actualmente siguen en peligro, sus amenazas son la pérdida de hábitats, hurto de sus polluelos para la venta y su caza. . El loro Tricahue es el de mayor tamaño entre las cuatro especies de loros que habitan en Chile. Se identifica fácilmente por su altura, larga cola y un vistoso color amarillo en su abdomen con un centro anaranjado. . En octubre de 2019, el Departamento de Medio Ambiente Municipal de Algarrobo fue invitado a participar en el proyecto “Red para la Protección de las Aves Playeras” coordinado a nivel nacional por la ROC – Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile, el que fue financiado por la ONG Humedales Costeros. El proyecto tiene por objetivo generar una red de monitoreo de Pilpilén común (Haematopus palliatus) y el Chorlito nevado (Charadrius nivosus) en humedales de la costa semi-árida de Chile, coordinando esfuerzos para evaluar su éxito reproductivo y las principales amenazas que enfrentan en sus áreas de descanso, alimentación y nidificación en el norte y centro de Chile. De esta forma, se sentarán las bases para futuros planes y programas de gestión y conservación de estas especies. 👉🏻 Desde que la ROC se adjudicó y nos invitó a participar en este proyecto, ha sido una satisfacción formar parte de esta Red a nivel nacional. También por ser el Humedal El Membrillo el punto elegido para el estudio, puesto que llevamos un monitoreo y seguimiento de este humedal desde hace 7 años, período durante el cual hemos podido constatar la importancia de este lugar como zona de descanso, alimentación y nidificación de aves playeras, especialmente del pilpilén común, y como corredor biológico de varias especies de aves migratorias. Durante estos años, hemos confirmado la presencia de 73 especies de aves en este humedal, de las cuales alrededor de 15 lo utilizan como hábitat reproductivo. También como Dpto. Ambiental estamos trabajando en generar informes técnicos para obtener la protección oficial del Humedal. *TRIP REPORT* WEDDIN MOUNTAINS,NSW June 2019 Pictures by Gabrielle Hunt - female Speckled warbler and an eastern yellow robin being released. A strong team of banders from Canberra, Albury and Sydney met at the Weddin Mountains, near Grenfell in central NSW, over the long weekend. Conditions were perfect and we soon had over 50 nets set up around the site. Unfortunately, birds were scarce (probably due to the drought, despite some recent rain) and it was slow work. Eastern Yellow Robins and White-throated Treecreepers were the commonest birds but a sprinkling of White-plumed Honeyeaters, Golden Whistlers, Speckled Warblers, a Brown Treecreeper and some White-browed Babblers (amongst other things) added to the variety. Perhaps most interesting was the very high percentage of retraps, many quite old. At one stage the retrap rate was around the 90% mark! We ended with 76 captures and a 78% retrap rate. - @absabirds on Instagram

- One reason passenger pigeons went extinct so quickly is because they were specifically adapted for living in giant flocks. They collected food communally and raised young communally. As they started being hunted, they no longer had enough pigeons for these behaviours and went extinct.

It was extra cool to be a part of the plastic shark mosaic creation - you should be proud of the final piece and the exhibit as a whole, massive undertaking!
