The concept/organization/culture presents that the white race is superior and therefore should maintain dominance. The mere concept is an affront to the doctrine of the imago dei, which espouses that all people are created in the image of God and thus have inherent worth and dignity. As Christians, we are obligated to denounce racism in every form. Affirming the image of God impressed on every person. White supremacy must never be tolerated. Im honored to have been featured in this NY Times Article discussing how exclusive the Abortion Rights/Reproductive Health conversation is for Black Women, TGNC folx, and for young people. When I was interviewed for the article I finally understood that there IS a disconnect within the Reproductive Justice movement. Black Women are the backbone for Reproductive Justice. The American health care system is deeply rooted in racism and the active oppression of Black Woman. Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey three enslaved Black Woman are the foundation of Gynecology and reproductive health. There needs to be an active push towards including young people and Black Women in the conversation of Reproductive Rights. More often than not white woman ONLY advocate for Roe v. Wade. They center their work around protecting a White Womans choice. While turning a blind eye to systematic oppression that Black Woman face. We have to recognize the intersections of the Reproductive Justice movement. For too long have people only had the conversation of Repro Justice without mentioning Racial Justice, Accessible Health Care, Education Equity, and Environmental Justice. You cant advocate for Reproductive Justice if youre not actively advocating for police accountability and the investment in communities. You cant do so without acknowledging stories of Emerald Black and the disproportionate infant mortality rate facing Black Woman. Make your activism intersectional, it should be founded on protecting the most marginalized people. Thank you to Emma and Hiroko for sharing the work of all these wonderful activist. The short walk up the boardwalk gives you an amazing panoramic view of Paynes Prairie. It is a great place to relax and watch the wildlife roam around the prairie. You may even see a 🐊 swim by! ⠀ The boardwalk is also one of the best places in Gainesville to catch a beautiful sunset/sunrise. You will typically see cars lined up on the side of the road, where people watch the sunset. If you’ve never heard his name, theatre lovers will know his designs for the OBC of Cinderella, Hairspray, Producers, Seussical, Nine, Young Frankenstein, Crazy For You, Grey Gardens, Beetlejuice, Big Fish, 9 to 5, Curtains, Boy from Oz... 79 Broadway shows and revivals. An extreme example of an unchecked gate keeper. Think of the thousands of less privileged, newcomer, and BIPOC designers he was chosen over because he is a “safe bet”. Safe for who? Not the actors and crew. Safe for the producers. This yet another example of why we need to amplify young, femme and BIPOC voices and artists. When I think of how many of his costumes I’ve idolized, replicated myself, or been put in, I’m sick. You’ll never see that from me again. Whether you are 20 or 60, I think this will strike a cord with many of you. Yesterday I overheard a beautiful girl, around 23-25 years old tell her friends how she hates her body, how disgusting she is and cant bear to look in the mirror. She was half laughing but you could hear the tinge of sorrow in her voice. I wondered, if she thinks that about herself now in her 20s, how is she going to speak about her body in 10 or 20 years time? No matter what stage of life you are at, we are only getting older. We may have this fantasy self in our heads - a million stone lighter with a ripped bod, thats how we are going to look this time next year right? From what the evidence suggests, that unlikely without an extreme level of sacrifice to our mental and physical health. If you cant let go of the fantasy self- thats ok. It takes time to let go of wanting to lose weight after years in diet culture. But you certainly cant hate your way to a better life. Start with changing your inner narrative. Respect your body not for how it looks, but what it does for you. At Tuesday’s meeting, NDP education critic Claudia Chender addressed growing angst among parents and school staff about the reopening plan, calling the 36-page document an outline that prioritizes safety in schools but lacks essential operational detail. Chender put forward a motion to the all-party committee that the group write a letter to Education Minister Zach Churchill asking for the department to provide numbers on school classrooms able to meet social distancing requirements and its communication plan with teachers, staff and parents. The Dartmouth South MLA also asked that the minister release the results of school ventilation testing that began earlier this month. The province pledged to assess ventilation systems in all schools before reopening on Sept. 8 and last Thursday Churchill said no issues had been found in any schools tested at that point. Chender’s motion received unanimous support from her three fellow opposition members, NDP Kendra Coombes and Tories Brad Johns and Larry Harrison but the motion was defeated by a unanimous Liberal vote, including chairman Brendan Maguire, vice-chairwoman Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Bill Horne, Rafah DiCostanzo and Ben Jessome. . . . I’ve been fearful of the endless uncertainty that has consumed all of our lives since March. And most recently I’ve been anxious about my upcoming court appearance for the kkkriminal charges I’m facing in NYC for peacefully protesting 😑😞 I am angry & sad & disappointed & disgusted. I hate this country. I hate the conditions that leave us consistently trapped between a rock & a hard place. I wish there was some magical escape from the nightmare that is America. It helped that Wall Street banks and institutional investors took a hands-off approach to cannabis, leery of getting involved with a drug that’s still banned by the federal government. “It was a pretty even playing field for everybody—men, women, anybody who was interested,” Whiteman says. These days, however, the industry is increasingly dominated by men. The influx of venture money and Wall Street dollars, in addition to the rise of larger companies operating across several states, has made things harder for startups and, by extension, female-led businesses. In 2015, 36% of pot executives in Colorado were women, but just two years later that dropped to 27%, according to Marijuana Business Daily. It’s the closest way of words that can describe my relationship to my work. The lives that I have had the privilege to witness through my art are living breathing entities that grow, changes and teach. After all transitions give room for vulnerability. We grieve loss and we celebrate birth along this winding path of complex human emotions. It’s such a testament to life and what makes it so fragile and beautiful. My entire life is embedded in all I do, it’s the only way I know how to create. Each image is a reflection of my own story. These photographs are a glimpse of that sacred space. It is with pure joy that I am sharing this heartfelt project that I did for the July issue of Purist Magazine. I am deeply thankful for the relationships that trusted me and allowed me to share this. There is not a moment that goes by without that gratitude. It’s a complicated fragile time in this country and I have found that healing is never something we do completely in solitude. Our wounds are our courage, our brokenness is also our light. It took me a long time to truly lean into that process. Don, Loved capturing all these images.
