27 years ago today, CdM resident Jim Abbott pitched a no-hitter for the New York Yankees. Only 10 Yankees pitchers have thrown a no-hitter in the franchise’s 120 years. What makes Abbott’s no-hitter even more remarkable is he was born without a right hand. Born in Flint, Michigan, Abbott had a 10 year career in the major leagues after being drafted by the Angels following a standout career at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). As a sophomore at Michigan in 1987, he won the Sullivan Award as the Nation’s Top Amateur Athlete, the Golden Spikes Award as the top college baseball player, and became the first US pitcher to beat the Cuban national team in Cuba in 25 years. As a junior, he led the US to a Gold Medal in the 1988 Olympics, beating Japan in the final game in Seoul. He went straight from college to the starting rotation of the Angels without ever spending a day in the minor leagues. In 1991, he finished third in the voting for the Cy Young Award, given annually to the best pitcher in the league. He played 4 seasons for the Angels before they traded him to the Yankees in a cost-cutting move. He played 2 seasons in New York before signing with the White Sox who traded him back to the Angels, where he played 2 seasons before closing out his career with the White Sox and Brewers. Abbott retired from baseball in 1999 and raised two daughters with his wife, Dana, in Corona del Mar. Both of his daughters, Maddy and Ella, grew up to be standout athletes and followed in his footsteps by playing Volleyball and Water Polo, respectively, at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). He is in demand as a motivational speaker and heavily involved in children’s charities. He has twice been named the March of Dimes Athlete of the Year, and received the Freedom Forum’s Free Spirit Award for his charitable work. He’s still very involved in disabled children’s causes and continues to make appearances for various charitable organizations. We have to be creative, manager Charlie Montoyo said. We feel thats our best chance. This sure is creative. Because the Tampa Bay Rays struggle with splitters and high velocity pitches, Matt Shoemaker should match up well against them. Rolling Shoemaker out for game one -- possibly as an opener -- also helps the Blue Jays get to some of their lefty relievers, who are especially useful against a Tampa Bay lineup. Those relievers will be less needed in game two, with the left-handed Ryu on the mound. Pitching Ryu in game two makes sense. Ryu will get five days of rest, which typically bodes well for him. In 2020, he has a 2.29 ERA in games on five days of rest, opposed to a 2.74 ERA in games with four days of rest. Not a huge split, sure, but any advantage is important. And Walker, slated for game three (if necessary), has jarring lefty-righty splits. This season, right-handed batters have a slash line of .178/.252/.263 against Walker. But against left-handed batters -- which the Rays employ heavily -- the slash line is .265/.351/.518. Its unconventional, but the numbers support Torontos strategy. It will be 1,440 days, 22 hours and 14 minutes from the time the Toronto Blue Jays were eliminated in 2016 by the Cleveland baseball team when Blake Snell, on the mound for the Tampa Bay Rays, throws the first pitch of Torontos return to the postseason. Its been a long time coming. The Blue Jays are one of the youngest teams in baseball, and their longest tenured player is Teoscar Hernández, who joined the roster halfway through 2017. No player on the roster has their 10 years of major league service time -- and only one has a World Series ring to his name. But dont mistake youth for inexperience or a lack of talent. This series is only three games. It will be a bumpy ride. By tomorrow night, the Blue Jays could be eliminated -- or they could be moving on to the ALDS. Only time will tell. Comment what you think the final score will (by first pitch), and the closest guess will be featured at the end of the game! Matt Shoemaker doesnt make intuitive sense to start game one of a do-or-die postseason series, but the numbers work out. Hyun-jin Ryu wants an additional day of rest, and Taijuan Walker doesnt have good enough numbers against left-handed hitters to justify rolling him out against the lefty-heavy Rays. Shoemaker will have a tight leash -- think 75 pitches as the absolute max -- and Robbie Ray will likely be the next man out of the bullpen. This sets up the righty-lefty mix nicely. Rays manager Kevin Cash will be faced with the decision to pinch hit early on the game, or muscle through a few innings of Ray before returning to the righties out of Torontos bullpen. (Or lefties! Ryan Borucki could come out and mess with Tampa Bays plan.) Blake Snell hasnt had his best season, but hes been serviceable for the Rays. The tall lefty has posted a 3.24 ERA for Tampa Bay, but has gotten luck to some extent -- his FIP sits at 4.35, and his WHIP is 1.200. 💥YANKEES WIN 10-9!💥 UNBELIEVABLE!! THEY DID IT! The Yankees win a wild one in perhaps the game of the year. What a rollercoaster ride. Over 4 hours of just absolute mayhem, and it all leads to a Yankees plane ride to San Diego. It was a wacky one from the very beginning, with rain delays plaguing the start of the game and messing up both starters. Tanaka was not his best, although he did bounce back after a rough first inning. Still a rough start. His line: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. After the Yanks fell behind 4-0 in a 1st inning that was split up with a rain delay, Giancarlo chipped away in the second with his second home run in as many games. A couple innings later, the Yanks loaded the bases with no one out for Gio. Hicks tripled, followed by walks from Voit and G. Urshela swatted a low 3-2 offering into the night and over the left-field wall for a GRAND SLAM and a 5-4 lead in the 4th. He became the 3rd Yankee (after Gil McDougald in 1951 and Tino Martinez in 1998) o hit a go-ahead grand slam in the playoffs. An inning later, G added a sac fly to make it 6-4, but the Tribe would tie it in the bottom of the inning. Luckily, Gary quickly came to the rescue. He belted a wind-assisted 2-run shot to right to give the Yanks the lead again. It just barely scraped over the wall. Such a huge hit, and that wasn’t all from the Yankee catcher. Britton came into the game in the 6th to escape a jam with 2 on and 1 out for Green. With a 2-run lead, I loved this move from Boone. Britton induced the DP and escaped the frame. Unfortunately, all hell broke loose in the 7th. After Britton retired the 1st 2 hitters, he allowed the next 2 to reach. Boone questionably brought in Loaisiga from the pen, and he allowed a 2B to tie the game. Johnny came in for the 8th and also was credited for Cleveland’s go ahead run. It looked like the Yanks were toast. Cleveland sent Brad Hand in, who hadn’t blown a save all year. G walked. Gio singled. Torres singled. YANKEES WIN 10-9! ONTO THE ALDS! WHAT A GAME! Yankees secure the two game sweep of the Indians in a WILD game behind a CLUTCH 2-run single in the 9th from who other than DJ LeMahieu, and are set to take on the Rays Monday in the division series! The beginning of this game was pretty infuriating to say the least. Tanaka was forced to pitch to three batters in pouring rain, and gave up a run. The game then went into a delay. After about 45 minutes, Masa gave up three more runs to put the Yankees in a deep 4-0 hole. The Yankees ultimately climbed out of that deep hole. Stanton went oppo for a solo shot to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the 2nd. In the 4th, the comeback began. Carrasco loaded the bases to bring on James Karinchak, a top reliever in baseball this season. Gio connected on a go-ahead GRAND SLAM to put the Yankees in front 5-4! CLUTCH. In the 5th, a Stanton sac-fly extended the lead to 6-4 Bombers. Green came on in replace of Tanaka in the 6th, and threw an 0-1 slider to Jose Ramirez who smacked a 2-run double to tie the game at 6. Horrible pitch selection. He did although pitch 1.1 scoreless IP. In the 6th, Gary delivered a 2-run shot to right to put the Yankees back on top 8-6! Boy did he desperately need that. Britton went 1.1 IP and allowed two runs after walking two. Loaisiga came on with two outs in the 7th and allowed a 2-run double to Jordan Luplow, which tied the game at 8. Loasiga gave up 1 ER over just 0.1 IP. He was awful. In the 9th, Gary tied it up at 9 with a sac-fly and then DJ LeMahieu. He delivered just as expected with an RBI single to give the Yankees a 10-9 lead! Chapman went 2.0 IP scoreless to earn the win! A GAME FOR THE AGES. UNBELIEVABLE. BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Baltimore Orioles announced Sunday that pitcher Dean Kremer, one of the organization’s top prospects, will make his major league debut Sunday in a start against the New York Yankees. In doing so, he becomes the first Israeli citizen to reach the majors. Kremer is ranked as the O’s 10th best prospect by MLB Pipeline. He has risen quickly through the ranks of the organization since arriving in Baltimore as part of the Manny Machado trade in 2017. He assumes the roster position of pitcher David Hess, who was optioned Saturday night, and takes the rotation spot of Asher Wojciechowski. Kremer came close to reaching the big leagues last year when he posted a 3.72 ERA with 122 strikeouts over 113 2/3 innings across three levels ending at Triple-A. He was particularly effective as part of the rotation at Double-A Bowie, going 9-4 in 15 starts for the team. Kremer was born in California to Israeli parents and holds Israeli citizenship. He became the first Israeli to sign with an MLB team after being drafted in the 14th round by the Dodgers in 2016. Like legendary Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax, he has assured reporters that he would not pitch on Yom Kippur and he takes his Jewish faith seriously. - @thecjn on Instagram
