The first picture is of my Dad & my Mum hugging me after surprising them at my old house having not seen them in person for 6 years. The second my Father in his parade uniform in Cyprus. The third me as a baby after he had left Mi5 and joined the London Metropolitan Police 👮♀️ because he wanted to keep making a difference in the world BUT wanted to NOT vanish for months and weeks on end and put his family first. The last is of the regimental crest of the 🇬🇧 RCT (the corps he joined as a 16 year old boy) that I wanted to add to me so he knows that he’s always with me. Quite ‘frankly’, if you haven’t visited @frankly.bagels ... where have you been? This morning we took ourselves down to this popular hole in the wall for some delicious fresh bagels! It seems the whole of Adelaide was there (so they must be good). We ordered 2 coffees and 2 #10 bagels. A really wonderful thing happened the other day. I got a call from a woman in Wisconsin saying she saw my pictures online of her old friend and wanted to see if I could get her contact information so she could mail her a letter. Her friend I photographed was Sister Jeanne Morreall. She has been fostering children who have physical and developmental disabilities for about 30 years. The woman on the phone had been looking through old papers at her desk since shes been quarantined and found something about Sister Jeanne. She hadnt seen her in over 60 years - they were neighbors growing up in Rochester. It just so happens when she googled she found my photos from 2017 on my old website. I called Sister Jeanne and got a chance to catch up with her since I hadnt spoken to her in a while. I was happy to find out that her and her foster children were doing well during these unusual times. Any visit to the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in winter is incomplete without trying malaiyo. This fluffy, melt in the mouth dessert consists of saffron milk which is beaten for hours to create a souffle-like consistency. It is specifically a speciality of the city of Varanasi, though its possible to find it in Agra where its known as ,Makhan Malai Lucknow where its known as Nimish, and even in the streets of Old Delhi. Its a seasonal street dessert, only found in the winter months, and is best eaten in the morning when its at its freshest. Its an utter delight, and even for those who find Indian sweets to be too sweet, it is impossible not to absolutely fall in love with it. Hola Mexico is an event created by us, where different destinations of Mexico had the chance to present some of their uniqueness in Houston. I knowww there’s a lot going on atm and everyone is emotionally drained, but if you have a minute.. It’s the Memorial Day for the Battle of Okinawa today. A war that resulted in the deaths of a third of the indigenous civilian population of Okinawa (death toll higher than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined). A war that my grandparents just about managed to survive, but one that many of my relatives didn’t. My granny (6 at the time) was hiding in the jungle for months, and only went out to beg for sweets from the American soldiers. My great-granny had to bury her own deceased children on the beach at night, for fear of being killed herself. She remembered exactly where she buried them and went back years later to retrieve the bones. Fast forward to now, and U.S. Army bases still cover 20% of the island (on former villages and sacred grounds that are now inaccessible to civilians), despite constant protesting by locals (including my 80+ old grandparents) to have them removed. They are expanding by putting a helipad over Henoko Bay; a bay with a beautiful coral reef, and one of the only breeding grounds of dugongs in the entire world. There was a blatantly clear Okinawan majority vote against the plan, and the Japanese central government is pushing forward anyway. The Japanese Prime Minister refused to even meet with the Okinawan prefectural governor. The decline of democracy in Japan is terrifying to watch. At a peaceful protest last year, I witnessed frail old men and women (80yrs+) being lifted by their hands and feet by riot police. It’s heartbreaking to see people who lost everything in the war, and have only ever wanted peace, being treated like criminals. There have been many petitions floating around over the years, but unfortunately the top courts have rejected them all. Feeling a bit helpless about it all but thought I’d at least share a bit of info bc I know most people have never even heard about it, and Okinawa is somewhere I hold very dearly to my heart. It’s a beautiful place with a subtropical climate, and has a rich and diverse cultural history (Karate is Okinawan, not Japanese), and its own language and dialects. My brother just reminded me that it was 10 years to the day since my season 1 bake off win was broadcast, and what a wild 10 years it’s been! As every ‘where are they now’ piece likes to point out, Bake Off was far from the runaway success it is now, there was far fewer viewers, less media interest and I had no idea what life post the show would be. Another year to mark the passage of time. Here it is, 56 years on our planet. 2020 you’re a hard one but I remain grateful for the constants is n my life. For the friends that have become family and for the brilliant memories of time spent together creating magic, sharing adventures and all the laughter and tears in between. For those who love me, thank you. I can test your patience, infuriate even, and yet you accept my imperfections while pushing me to excel. You celebrate my accomplishments and remind me to keep pushing forward even when I fail. I am thankful for your love, especially during these troubled times. You are there when I feel wounded, you lift me when I am down. To say that I appreciate each and everyone one of you would be an understatement. Even those who have hurt me because I know there is a lesson in that to be learned , sometimes to be learned again and again. My heart may be heavy but it is also full.
