GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN #24 N E Brotchie Pharmacy 21 Keys Street, Beaumaris Beaumaris’s enviable legacy of mid-century buildings is not just all about houses… there were churches, school buildings, banks, public halls… and Norm Brotchie’s chemist shop in Keys Road. The son of a pharmacist, Norm’s career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchie’s Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and years… it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007. Steve Cohen has made his first splash, announcing that he will be bringing back Sandy Alderson as the team president. In the role, Alderson will oversee all New York Mets business and baseball operations. In a statement, Cohen said: “Sandy is an accomplished and respected baseball executive who shares my philosophy of building an organization and a team the right way. I am excited to have Sandy in a key leadership role with the Mets if my purchase of the team is approved. Let’s Go Mets!” When Cohen was brought in as a minority owner in 2012, Alderson was the Mets GM. In other words, there is some familiar there between Cohen and Alderson. Alderson’s regime not only led the Mets to the 2015 World Series, but also many of the team’s best talents today — such as: Michael Conforto, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, Dom Smith, Noah Syndergaard, David Peterson, among others. Cohen uses analytics at the highest levels to help run his hedge fund, and Alderson has a very analytical background as well, learning it in Oakland and then applying it to the best of his capabilities under the Wilpons as GM from 2010-2018. The move indicates Brodie Van Wagenen’s days could be very numbered, as Alderson and BVW aren’t particularly close. As we build a record label in Newcastle for the people of Newcastle with local Novocastrian artists we like to think we are in good company. Newcastle has a long and rich history when it comes to music, who remembers The Palais? - The venue opened in 1929 and quickly become a destination for a great night out for all. The Palais’ arrival in Newcastle was a sign of the city growing up, becoming a beacon for those wanting to socialise and enjoy live music. There were jazz bands, dance bands, and people from all walks of life. Inside, there was an ornate ceiling held up by intricately carved columns. It was truly a masterpiece. - The venue hosted some of the biggest names in music including one memorable night when Crowded House forgot the song they were playing, in the process cracking themselves up – the crowd laughed too and the band simply started the song again. Unfortunately, the 1989 earthquake and then the 2007 Pasha Bulker storm brought this grand old lady to her dilapidated end. - Do you have a great story about The Palais? So very sad to hear of the passing of Sir Terrance Conran. When I was seventeen years old I worked after school and at weekends as a receptionist and coat check girl at his Bibendum restaurant. I was obsessed by the Michelin Building, and although I wasn’t very keen (or good ) at the job, I felt thrilled to be working in such a place, for such a iconic figure in design. Between shifts, if it was quiet I was allowed to sit in the Oyster Bar downstairs , where my uncle was the manager, and do my A-level revision with a hot chocolate. Transfixed by the how Sir Terence blended the original Art Deco features of this former tyre factory with beautiful curves of modern restaurant design, I would fantasise that it wasn’t actuallly a bistro , but my kitchen, designed to beautifully blend historic with contemporary . I use to go home to my mother and say one day I want a kitchen that looks like his restaurant! So inspired was I , that I actually did a History of Art dissertation on the building and built a replica clay model for my A-levels. At weekends I would spend hours going around the Conran Shop that was adjacent to the building, reading all the labels on the iconic pieces that it sold. I learnt of designers such Eames, Philip Starck, Bierdermiele.. old and new scions of design , mixed with Conran originals. I was fascinated how the store would move the departments around, style them, mix eras, always creating a feast for the eyes, whilst educating a somewhat awkward teenage girl. I only met Sir Terence a few times, insignificant for him, but momentous for me. Being the coat check girl meant you were often the last left in the restaurant, the chefs and the waiters could all leave, but I would have to wait for the final diners to finish their sweet wines and coffees late into the night - the bonus was I would have a few quiet ,magic, privileged moments, (before I would turn off the lights, and lock the doors ), of being on my own in the early London twilight hours of morning , surrounded by his designs..
