India, circa February, 2016. - We began our day with a taxi at 4am to catch a train from Delhi to Agra. It was still dark but Delhi doesn’t sleep—it was bustling with activity and chaos... tuktuks, cattle, people all intermingled. Upon our arrival at the train station, we encountered two men aggressively attempting to scam us and lead us to “travel agencies” off site since our train was conveniently “cancelled.” We were two foreign women much paler in skin tone, easy targets. After much confusion and harassment, we were lucky to meet a friendly college student who almost got in a fist fight trying to help us get to our platform. We laid low in a women only lounge prior to boarding, relieved to be safe from more unwanted attention. . On our six hour train ride, we had naively opted for the cheap seats since we were ballin on a budget. This meant a lot of things related to sanitation and safety that I’ll leave to your imagination, but I’ll share one thing (or many)... rats. The train moved painfully slowly from one station to the next as we felt the intense gaze of the men next to us. They watched our every move, likely just curious since we clearly did not belong, but it was extremely uncomfortable. Wendy and I mostly averted our eyes, staring at each other and out the window, praying (for six hours) that neither of us needed to use the restroom that was most certainly a bucket with little privacy. There was the occasional family and cute babies who cycled through, moments of levity and smiles and appropriate eye contact. . I think back and laugh at how often we found ourselves in dicey situations when we were younger. But we were brave too and always knew we would figure it out (and we did!). I took these photos on a #35mmfilm point & shoot rangefinder that I carried with me at all times. It can get real awkward taking photos in public while people three feet over stared at you so praise be 24 year old Ivy for sucking it up. But oh yeah, we made it to Agra and saw the Taj Mahal. And we made new friends and lived through more questionable scenarios. I’ll tell you all about them sometime. - @ivygchiu on Instagram

𝐂𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐲 All of us have music in us, more than we are aware of. The first thing babies learn is music; because tears are the ragas that our eyes sing, aided by the steady taal played by our hearts. All the breathtaking melodies that we have ever composed or replicated are encased in our eyes. There exists a raga for every human emotion and a raga for every hour of a day. We learn improvisation with impromptu tears. Perfecting the art of crying requires religious practice on a furnace of pain. My mother’s eyes start singing soft arrhythmic alaaps as the course of the night reaches a crescendo. The darker the night, the sadder the raga. Her compositions have always been soporific to me. The notes that cascade down her cheeks have the rawness of open wounds waiting to be nursed. But her melodies are very short-lived. They head for their funeral as soon as they take birth. She buries them in her pillow and still awaits an attentive audience appreciative of the music. My father has mastered the whole gamut except the hedonic tones. But he has altogether forgotten how to let the music flow down his eyes. I have never seen him sing fearlessly. He resorts to silence even in the most heart-rending moments. I suppose that is because he never had a good teacher who taught him how to sing. And people have always shunned soft musical notes from him; expecting constant musical exuberance. I am a komal ‘Re’ strum from a broken sitar; misplaced in a raga which precludes my presence. I am brilliant at predicting aversiveness. And my crying is the unleashing of forbidden passions. Every tear of mine is a love child of melancholia and yearning which suckles at the appetitive part of my tripartite soul. Since I have learned music from my mother, I too sing to myself when only the night listens in rapt silence. By the end of this musical journey, I hope I can perfect the rendition of at least one upbeat raga. - @_hue_avenue_ on Instagram

It’s hard to believe it’s been 6 years and 220 videos since the Art Assignment began. It’s probably less hard to believe that we are ready for some time off. Just posted a new video with the announcement that we are: 1) taking a few months off, and then 2) dramatically slowing down production. This has been in the works for a while, as I’m looking to switch gears, read more, see more art, make more art, talk to more people about art, and in general think more sloooowwwly about what art education could and should look like in 2020 and beyond. The Art Assignment will still exist! It’s just shifting and evolving, to focus less on YouTube videos and more on the potential of everything else. The image above is a detail of a photograph by Gjon Mili (1904 - 1984) for an article called How to Sleep that was published in the April 5, 1943 issue of Life Magazine. Awaz - An online exhibition by the participants of Introduction to Visual Storytelling 2020 workshop (link in bio) 10 participants from Darjeeling Hills and Sikkim spent over two-weeks of intensive sessions with mentors Praveen Chettri, Shivam Darnal, Kunga Tashi and guest artist @uma.bista @prakashbhuyan @irohitsaha learning, unlearning and above all pushing their creative boundaries, restricted as we all were due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
