The bizarre looking aye-aye, Daubentonia madagascariensis, is the world’s largest nocturnal primate. Endemic to the island of Madagascar, this primate has a number of morphological adaptations to aid their unusual feeding habits. By tapping tree-bark with their long thin middle fingers they can locate cavities, then using their large ears they listen for the sounds of grubs burrowing beneath the bark. If a grub is heard, the aye-aye will rip open the cavity with its teeth and use their dextrous fourth finger to hook out the grub. Ranking 19th on the EDGE mammal list, and IUCN classing them as Endangered this primate is at risk from not only habitat destruction but with local superstition regarding them as an evil omen, the aye-aye is killed on sight in certain areas. These guys need snacks! Last year I got to visit Animal Tracks animal sanctuary. They rescue and care for abused monkeys, kangaroos, wolves and all sorts of great animals. They run the sanctuary with donations from visitors. Because of the pandemic, they can’t have visitors anymore so they don’t have money to care for these guys:( If you can help, please do. We have some fantastic news. King, the lion who lives at our big cat sanctuary at @shamwariprivategamereserve has a companion! Just a few days ago, we introduced him to Thea, one of the Lions of Lyon who arrived at our sanctuary last year. In August, we temporarily subdivided King’s enclosure with a fence and moved in Thea so they could become familiar with each other. Within a week, they were spending most of their time nuzzling against each other either side of the fence. After a month, we made the decision to properly introduce them. King moved through the sliding gate in the dividing fence to greet Thea in her side of the enclosure. Her initial reaction was to give him a gentle swipe on the nose but she quickly warmed to him. Since then, they have been inseparable, spending their time playing together and climbing on their jungle gym. Uma raposinha passando pela sua timeline. ✨ Eu n sei pq escolhi essa foto, talvez seja só pra combinar com o feed, mas eu precisava falar algumas coisas que n seriam ilustradas por uma selfie. De uns tempos pra cá, eu venho percebendo que as pessoas na internet vem se tornando cada vez mais iguais, tanto a cara quanto no comportamento nas redes sociais. Eu cansei de ver as mesmas caras, as mesmas dancinhas de tiktok( me julguem eu n consegui ser tiktoker), os mesmos challenges, as mesmas caras e bocas de sempre. Eu sei que pode ser uma fase, sei que pode ser eu mesma que nunca tive muita fé no ser humano, mas pelo menos pra mim tá tudo meio saturado. Por vezes eu já tentei criar coragem de me mostrar mais como sou, fazer o que gosto e postar e foda-se, mas no fundo sempre me importei com o que “os outros” iriam achar, se iriam rir de mim, se estaria feio ou mal feito... mas até a quarentena me fez perceber que ninguém se importa, só vai lá e faz sabe? E não espere apreço de ninguém, nem daqueles que dizem: to contigo! Pois são os primeiros a não dar valor no teu trabalho e a não se importar. Só faz por você, seja você mesmo e tente ser diferente de todas as milhões de caras que a gnt vê igual por aí. Eu penso muito em gravar vídeos conversando, falando sobre coisas do dia a dia, meus gostos de séries e filmes, ate mesmo cantando, mas a minha ansiedade não me deixa sair da vontade, e isso é horrível, mas isso já seria outro textão que eu sei que muita gente nem esse aqui vai ler kkk Enfim, eu só precisava desabafar um pouco sobre o que ando sentindo sobre redes sociais, pessoas e vontades. Esse vírus me fez ver que a gnt pode morrer daqui prali e não fazer muita coisa que tem vontade. Por isso voltei a me tatuar, por isso gravei vídeo cantando( criando coragem pra postar), e valorizo cada dia mais quem tá comigo. (E aprendia a me valorizar também, chega). Mas é isso, minha cabeça pensa e sente muita coisa que não mostro por aqui e talvez nem devesse, mas eu precisava escrever sobre. Photo by @juliawimmerlin | Monkeys can be seen on the streets of Jaipur, India, as often as sacred cows. According to the Hindu law of karma, all animals should be well treated, so the monkeys, in no evident danger, adapted very well to city life. These gray langurs, pictured at Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur, ran behind me as I was going up the narrow path above the stepwell to photograph the city panorama. They were so close that I felt the touch of one’s tail on my leg. What an epic start to the school hols! After having a putt, we decided to make the most of being in the area by visiting the (new-ish) @thesydneyzoo. It opened in December 2019, but havent had the opportunity to check it out until now. And WOW! What a beautiful zoo it is. Sydney Zoo is really easily laid out and very easy to navigate. It’s mostly flat and there are no stairs – so if you’ve got a pram or wheelchair, it’s extremely accessible. There are two main circuits to follow. After arriving, you can start by walking along Primate Boulevard, and you might want to kick off with a coffee or ice-cream from the Boulevard Eatery. Then either turn left to pass through the African and Asian exhibits, or turn right and explore the Aquarium and Australian section. There are plenty of toilets dotted around the zoo, and a five cafes too for snacks, refreshments and lunch. You’ll probably want to spend around 3-4 hours there to see it all (but won’t be completely exhausted by the end!). If youre planning to visit, be sure to pre-book your tickets online as they are limiting daily numbers due to Covid-19. Plus, its cheaper and quicker to get in! Or, if you think you might like to go a couple of times within the next year, definitely look at getting a membership (theyre great value). Hyenas are critical to controlling prey populations and preventing the spread of disease by consuming entire carcasses. They are also one of the most socially complex carnivores on the planet, forming tightly knit clans that are often led by female Alphas and can number over 100 individuals if the conditions are right. The Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) has tan like fur with multiple dark spots across its body. It’s most iconic characteristic is its long beard and black ear tufts. However, the Iberian Lynx is listed as endangered on the IUCN red list. IUCN defines endangered as having a very high risk of extinction in the near future, a population size of less than 250, or a 50 to 70 percent decline in population size in the past generation. No, we aren’t reenacting The Lion King. We just had lovely Timone the meerkat in today for a neutering procedure, which was performed by our lovely vet Aris. Timone is not a domestic pet and is part of the animal program at a local college. Until 2017 Crest-tailed Mulgaras were classed as extinct in NSW until one came from interstate for a visit. Now the good folks at WildDeserts have reintroduced a bunch more friends to bolster the population. It was a privilege to be there for a small part of it and not to have been involved in the mountain of paperwork to make it happen. En el caso de nuestro protagonista, no sabemos si es la edad, el dolor de espalda o un 2020 que le ha pasado por encima, pero no se separa de su bastón. Meerkats live together in groups called mobs. However, one lone ranger will stand on its hind legs, propped up by its tail, and act as a lookout while the rest of the mob is outside of the burrows. The lookout scans the area for predators like hawks and snakes. If a predator is spotted, the watchman lets out a distinctive bark. The mob knows it is time to hustle back to the burrows for safety. Gang business 👊... Meerkats are extremely social animals that live together in burrows, which they dig with their long, sharp claws. Living underground keeps mob members safe from predators and out of the harsh African heat. Meerkats are matriarchal, and the alpha female chooses the alpha male. In addition to the alpha couple, the gang consists of beta males, beta females and pups. Pups are meerkat babies, 10 months old or younger. Beta males and beta females are all the meerkats in the gang who are not pups or the alpha couple. Il suricato è un mammifero carnivoro che vive nelle zone desertiche dell’Africa meridionale. È un animale intelligente con un aspetto paurosamente simpatico. I suricati vivono in gruppi anche di 30 esemplari con una struttura sociale molto ben definita in cui ognuno ha il suo ruolo (uno fra i tanti è quello di ‘sentinella’ immortalato anche nei cartoni animati). I cuccioli di suricato in un certo senso vanno a scuola. Ricevono, cioè, dai genitori una vera e propria serie di lezioni scolastiche su come trattare, gestire e catturare le loro prede tra le quali compaiono anche i pericolosi scorpioni. Gli esemplari adulti riescono a insegnare ai ‘baby suricati’ come catturare uno scorpione senza farsi pungere dalla sua coda.
