Meet Lower School Nurse Elizabeth Blanton 97 Elizabeth Blanton, SN, RN, NCSN is very familiar with St. Catherine’s. She started her St. Catherine’s journey in kindergarten, graduating in 1997. Prior to joining St. Catherine’s as a school nurse a decade ago, Blanton worked at VCU in Acute Care Pediatrics. Why nursing? Nursing is a great way to give back to the community. The profession gives you a sense of purpose. Intellectually it also keeps me interested. Ive always loved pediatrics and community health nursing, so school nursing is a great combination of those fields. What is the best part of your day at St. Catherine’s? Spending time with the children. The students are so happy to be back on campus, and it has made all of the hard work and continued efforts we are making worth it. What is one thing you want the Saints community to know right now? Be patient with yourself and others. Life is very stressful right now, and unfortunately we dont know when this COVID crisis will resolve. Its important that you take care of your physical and mental health. If we are patient with ourselves and reduce stress, our immune systems will be more robust. Remember that we are not living in normal times, so dont expect your daily life to be normal. Were dedicated to doing whatever it takes to improve the lives of shelter dogs...including intensive snuggling! Our team got pretty creative to provide this puppy in our program, named Citra, with some extra stress relief. ___ Citra is a 2-month-old Great Pyrenees mix who we brought to Gigis from our rural partners at Jackson County Dog Pound as part of our Adoption Readiness Program. To get her ready for a new family, Citra received all her vaccines, vet care, and a behavioral evaluation before being placed with one of our incredible dog foster families. Were happy to report her foster just made it official and adopted this new Gigis grad too! Pictured here is the world class cataract surgeon Dr Robert Osher, whom I spent a day with while visiting Cincinnati! ⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ —-For years, I dreamed of working with an organ the size of a ping-pong ball. Keeping my sights (pun intended) on ophthalmology, my path to matching at times felt like a modern-day gauntlet. I braced myself for high competition, relatively few residency slots, and a separate early match system, the San Francisco Match. Despite the stacked odds, I remained optimistic. Ive a triangular scar on my arm where i had to pick out a shard of glass wedged in. Not fun... How Patients See Us Vs. How We See Ourselves 🤓 As a provider, it can be easy to forget that many patients arrive in the dental chair with a preconceived notion of how their appointment will go. The patient may have had a bad experience in the past, believing that we are there to cause them pain. Because of this–I try to go above and beyond to make them comfortable, while also letting my authentic self shine through. I do my best to help patients understand why I chose this career (to do the exact opposite of cause them pain!)–alleviating any fears they may come in with. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an alternative therapeutic strategy for the management of several gut disorders, including IBD, since the gut inflammatory process is frequently associated with dysbiosis. FMT consists of the transfer of fecal material from a healthy donor, via the colon, aiming to restore the individuals normal intestinal microbiota FMT for the management of patients with IBD demonstrated a response rate of 53.8% with a complete remission of 37%. A few months ago one very beautiful family lost their choccie lab, Snickers to a #cancer I couldn’t save him from 😞 They were devastated and I was devastated. They loved that dog. Let’s talk about Vital Signs! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏩 Vital signs provide us with critical information needed to make treatment decisions. Above are the normal ranges for ADULT vital signs. Have these values memorized, you will need them for the rest of your nursing career! 🩺 We typically monitor our patient’s vital signs q4h, q8h or q12h (1-3 times) every shift but it varies for every patient! Know your patient’s baseline vitals - it will be easier for you to determine any abnormal values. I like to take a look at the patient’s chart prior to the start of the shift to make note of their previous vitals. Remember each patient will have different baseline values depending on their current health and health history. ❗️ Remember: patients with COPD often have lower oxygen saturation and the range between 88-92% is normal and safe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👩🏻⚕️ Nursing students: report any abnormal values to your clinical instructor or your nurse.
