I feel overwhelmed, grateful, tired, and humbled. • Tonight we officially open Hedwig at @milwrep and I’m finding it difficult to articulate what the process of building this piece has been like. As I mentioned in my last post, I had truly no idea what to expect and it forced me to walk in on day one completely honest and open. I was met with grace, care, and kindness from every person that’s had a hand in the creation of this beast. • And let’s be clear - she is a beast. This show requires an immense amount of focus, specificity, and flexibility across every department. I’ve been absolutely stunned at how deeply committed every team member has been and their desire to truly collaborate. It’s beyond anything I’ve experienced before. • I think one of the main reasons I fell in love with the theater was because of the vulnerability that it requires on everyone’s part. The in-depth conversations that happen in the room, and the inevitable creative problem solving only works when everyone feels safe to show up honestly, without fear of ridicule or judgement. We can only hope that the magic combination of piece, personalities, place, and time align and the work becomes a joyful melding of minds. Frankly, that doesn’t happy very often. This time - it did. • So yes, I do feel incredibly fortunate to have ended up in a room with a group of human beings who wanted to make something special, and have fun doing it. Who insisted on every element being the best it could be, and taking care of one another above all else. That’s been the real gift - feeling seen, heard, and loved by a room full of people who were strangers a few weeks ago. It’s hard for me to feel worthy of any of that and this process has forced me, as always, to just trust and surrender. • Tonight is for them. Instagram only allows so many characters so I’ve tagged them all in a comment below. The thing I want to remember about THIS part of this journey is them. I did not take marching yesterday lightly. I never do. I did however feel very different about holding up my flag. Holding up my flag that my brave sister, Sarah Hegazi held up at a concert in 2017. This act led to her arrest, beatings, torture, family disownment and eventual safe transportation to Canada by the amazing work of @rainbowrailroad. She would later take her own life from the ptsd and harassment that continued to follow her. I do not know the experience of fearing for my life holding up a rainbow flag. I do not know the experience of walking through life as a black trans person. I do know what it’s like to constantly negotiate my existence. I do know what it’s like to question whether it’s a good idea to include two boy names on a housing application. And I do know what it’s like to feel the hate behind the word FAGGOT transform into the strength that makes me me. Today at Belfast’s Custom House Square, almost 500 members of the live events community gathered in a socially distanced, Covid-compliant display. Professions ranging from riggers to sound engineers, tour managers to truck drivers, and many more in-between wore masks and had pre-registered for track and trace as per current Government guidelines during this perfectly-executed event delivery. Clearly an emotional affair, the Northern Irish workers stood in defiance of the Government’s latest financial move, which leaves the live event industry’s skilled workers here facing a bleak future. “The UK Government has offered a 22% wage top up in order to help navigate the next few months. Our industry has not worked since mid-March, so 22% of nothing, is nothing,” says Events Producer Dino Cafolla. “We’re showing MPs that not only are we the most qualified industry to keep people safe at events, but telling them that we’d like to work together on a roadmap which allows our workforce to return. A blanket ban on all events has, in certain circumstances, resulted in illegal, unsafe gatherings by the general public. I have several friends that live in the Santa Cruz Mountains area. I have spent many pleasant times there. Many of those friends are musicians, so I decided to approach the design like I would a rock concert poster. I like many of the the 60s psychedelic poster artists, have been influenced by both the French Art Nouveau and Viennese Secessionist art movements. Both of these movements featured floral and natural images, as well as interesting lettering and occasional Asian art motifs. These designs were often symmetrical and very colorful. It feels like years ago that I made this whimsical assemblage - Lawn Canon - with bound chunks of painted sidewalk, scraps of astroturf, and tree root fragments for @maiden.la and @montevistaprojects LOIMBY (lawn ornaments in my backyard) show. Also known as Bisexuality+ Day, Bisexual Pride Day, and Celebrate Bisexuality Day, it was first observed in 1999 at the International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg South Africa. I was born in Richmond, Va, the original capital of the confederacy. The governor is finally demanding that his statue be removed from Monument Avenue. Lee’s is only one of many statues honoring confederate generals. There is a cult of Lee devotees that is still very strong in the south. People not from the south visit and find these monuments, and the many street names dedicated to confederate generals shocking. They’re right to react this way. It’s gross and stupid and honors a legacy of brutality and violence against blacks. Because Lee’s birthday is close to the holiday reserved for Dr. Martin Luther King, the Lee cult would surround his statue on that day with confederate flags waving. It’s always been a foul display. As part of iheART Main Street Art Challenge, @PortCreditBIA commissioned three @thepatchproject artists @mcclusk, @marco_bertuzzo and @lapirie to paint their works on 12 benches! Erin’s series reflects natural scenes that are connected to local ecology. She is interested in the composition of patterns, and wanted to take motifs prevalent in her artwork to create bright and colourful designs on the benches. Lauren’s series points to the inherent interconnectedness between humans and our shared environment. Influenced by Port Credit’s geography. two of the benches are inspired by our relationship to land, while the other two reference our relationship to water. The desire for human connection and physical touch intertwine with the desire for physical and spiritual connection to the earth. Marco’s series alludes to the symbolism of the number four - whether it be the four seasons, the four elements, the four humours, or the four cardinal directions. In reality there is no message, just a network of jumbled meaning. But it is within the process of trying to find the meaning, that true engagement with this work occurs. With the support of RBC Royal Bank @rbc, we were able to bring 42 activations to life in collaboration with 25 local creatives and 11 BIAs. 🗣️📣 To build an inclusive, intersectional environmental justice movement, we need to stop only uplifting white voices. ⁣ ⁣ I know Im a white activist saying this (more on this towards the end of the post) but its on white people to leave more space and speak up when were the only ones being represented. This came up with the launch of the #FaceTheClimateEmergency campaign when I saw the youth activists fronting it - theyre all white Europeans. ⁣ ⁣ The fight for climate justice is one that the Global North is only just catching up with; this is a fight that many in the Global South + in indigenous communities have been fighting for years + is a cause that BIPOC people actually care about more (read: @ayanaelizas article, Im a Black Climate Expert), so, its not enough to centre the voices + experiences of privileged, white activists in this fight. Open letters must be led by BIPOC voices, too.⁣ ⁣ White people need to give up their seats, or, if were using privilege for garnering attention (which Id hope is what Greta Thunberg intends) - recognise the lack of diverse voices + ensure activists who are experiencing marginalisation exacerbated by the causes of the climate crisis (racism is one of them) are uplifted just the same.⁣ ⁣ I found an open letter via Twitter written by 20 Fridays for Future activists from the Global South which also recently launched. I want THAT letter to get as much attention. Its linked in my IG Story.⁣ ⁣ Its the same as seeing white influencers launch a platform about the climate crisis + getting press attention whilst @intersectionalenvironmentalist gets little/none. BATALA NEW YORK ❤️✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 REPOST @wlodarczyk A large and diverse coalition of workers, organizations, elected officials and allies marched to Governor Cuomos New York City office on Friday in support of proposed legislation that would tax New Yorks billionaires to fund relief for workers who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic but are excluded from existing relief programs. The New York City Comptroller reported in March that half of all essential / frontline workers in the city are foreign-born, but research by @maketheroadny found that 92% of surveyed working-class immigrant households had suffered job or income loss due to the pandemic, and only 5% received unemployment benefits. A great number of essential immigrant workers are completely excluded from unemployment and other relief programs, despite paying taxes and contributing to the unemployment insurance fund like all other workers. Fridays March On Billionaires was the culmination of an action in which over 100 workers, elected officials and allies fasted for 24 hours and slept overnight on the sidewalk outside Jeff Bezos $16 million Madison Square Park pied-à-terre to call attention to this crisis and the need for action. I would like to thank everybody for coming yesterday to @londontranspride what an incredible and beautiful day. I’m so sad that the festivities were cut short due to intimidation and threats from the police. After numerous people contacting lawyers and legal observers we found out that the threats were empty and that £10,000 fine that they were waving over numerous peoples heads including speakers, stewards and the public wouldn’t have stood up in court. I was looking forward to hearing my trans+ siblings speak and paying tribute to our beautiful @elie.che but the police took part of that away from us. They took away our right to protest in regards to the leaked plans and the law surrounding the GRA and trans+ rights. The police are meant to be law enforcers and yesterday they did the opposite. They tried to shut down marginalised people from being heard at a critical and crucial time. I’m absolutely disgusted at them for exerting a power over the trans community trying to make an example out of us. It’s funny how they let anti-maskers protest? Let us not forget the reason why we have the rights today was to fight back against police brutality and violence against the LGBTQ+ community - especially black and brown trans+ sex workers. The police violence still ensues and although this time it’s not through physical violence, they violate us by taking away our rights which will probably lead to more of our dead brothers, sisters and siblings. I want to just say a big fuck you to the police and the Tory government. I am fed up and tired. The police and wider society treats trans+ people as less than and all we are asking our right to live and exist in peace without harassment and violence. Yesterday they tried to make an example out of us because we are seen as outsiders, freaks and less than. We might be seen as those things in this white supremacist, Misogynistic and transphobic world but we are beautiful, brave and unique. Let me tell you we will not be silenced and this just encourages myself and others to further fight for our rights as trans+ people.
