La Unidad de Patrimonio Comunal de la I. Municipalidad de Quintero, parte de la Red de Museos Región de Valparaíso, nos comparte información sobre el hallazgo de restos de palecamélidos en la Bahía de Quintero, los cuales fueron recuperados del fondo marino el 2012. Éstos corresponden principalmente a la extremidad anterior superior (húmero distal y radioulna), un cuarto carpiano y fragmentos de tibia, los cuales son comparables con los géneros Palaeolama y Hemiauchenia. Siendo estos camélidos extintos, posiblemente, los que precedieron a los actuales, donde se incluyen los guanacos. La prueba de carbono 14 a sedimentos orgánicos de la capa de arcilla y grava en la que estaban encapsulados, arrojó 13.600 años de antigüedad. Periodo que corresponde al fin de la úlltima era glacial. en la que grupos de humanos cazadores recolectores se dispersaban por América. Y aunque estos restos no presentan evidencia de intervención humana, si permiten conocer la ecología de los pastizales costeros donde habitaron los paleoindios, y donde probablemente cazaron paleocamélidos. Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong. Day One ! Werewolf 🐺 ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So this year I decided to try and bring my illustrations off the page a little and create some 3D things! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is Kettle. I first painted her two Drawlloweens ago and have wanted to make her into a doll for ages! I’ve been working on her on and off for the past few weeks and then had to madly finish her today. 😅 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her head is paperclay (with a polystyrene ball inside) painted with acrylics and varnish sealed. Her little dress is from a scrap of dupion silk (which was lovely to work with and super shiny) and trimmed with vintage lace. The cape is felt with a little wire stitched into the hems to keep the shape. I made the little socks out of a sacrificial sock of my own 🤫 everything had to be hand stitched because it’s so tiny (and I make silly sculptural nightmare patterns)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her tail is needle-felted with a foam and wire core. The only thing I didn’t make were the shoes which I’ve had for years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I used a lot of pictures of those werewolf cats, have you seen them?? I’m allergic to cats, otherwise I’d already have one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Happy Drawlloween everyone! - @hauntedpaper on Instagram

#ArtistSpotlight - Izumi Kato -- Japanese artist Izumi Kato creates surreal embryotic-looking figures through unconventional finger-painting and hand-chiseled softwood sculpture. Simplistic and unusual in appearance Katos figurative creations are inspired by sources ranging from Japanese pop culture to Shinto spirituality. Born in 1969 in Shimane, Japan, Izumi Kato lives and works between Tokyo, Japan, Hong Kong and China. He is beloved for his paintings and sculptures of fetal-like features that seem to draw a certain harmonization of human and animal. These enigmatic creatures, whilst with penetrating dark eyes, seem to contrastingly evoke a certain loveable nature. His artistic technique is all the more fascinating, painting with his own hands in lieu of paintbrushes, allowing him more control and closeness to his works. -- Working for several years as a manual labourer Kato launched his artistic career at around the age of 30, through his alternative style of painting. His distinctive childlike technique evolved initially from an act of rebellion against the strict attitude towards painting at the Musashino Art University of Tokyo, from which he graduated in 1992. Katos otherworldly playful creatures reflect the aesthetics of Japanese anime pop culture, such as Hayao Miyazaki films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.
