Today we’re back at Borough Market for our post yoga oysters. I’ve been thinking about how Londoners have literally been eating oysters in this exact spot for almost a thousand years. Today we them with stout for a more authentic experience. . You’re probably tired of our weekly date pictures, so I’m posting these pictures of Brown’s Dairy from the Camden archives. I’m a direct descendant of Charles Brown who opened this dairy in 1790. These pictures were taken in 1903, the year it was demolished to make way for the Camden Town tube station which stands to this day! I like to reflect on my family history of running family businesses in this great city. It’s with a sense of extreme pride that I’ve returned to the town where my ancestors grazed their kine on Primrose Hill, among our many links to this ancient city. . Coming in from the colonies and hanging out my shingle on Leyton’s ancient high road is the greatest adventure I’ve ever undertaken. Testing my fortune in this great city is the greatest gift I could ask for. . 🔸Friday Fact 🔸Above is an extraordinary photo of American hip hop group N.W.A. in Brixton, 1991. The photo recently surfaced on social media, capturing a rare and iconic moment. Left to right are some of the artists, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren. N.W.A. have performed twice at Brixton O2 Academy, first on June 9 1990 and again the following year on December 12 1991. In 2015, the biopic drama Straight Outta Compton (dir. F. Gary Gray, 2015) was premiered at The Ritzy. Rapper Ice Cube made a surprise appearance at the screening, and was accompanied by his son O’Shea Jackson Jr who plays his father in the film. Swipe for a 1957 KC Star ad touting a 6 pack of Pepsi (in the new single-drink size) for just a quarter! If the art deco style looks vaguely familiar, it absolutely is. This is now the corner of 63rd and Brookside Plaza looking southeast. Currently home of @panerabread Brookside, the drug store sign can still be seen on the top of the building but is rarely noticed unless you are looking up. Many unique Brookside features like this sign are hidden in plain sight. Visit the historic Brookside shops to see if you can find more. On this day, 1 October 1931, hundreds of tenants of an estate in Neukolln, Berlin, launched a rent strike to pressure their landlord into evicting the SA: Nazi Brownshirts. However, most of the tenants were on welfare so could not actually withhold their rent and so eventually the strike crumbled unsuccessfully. Rescue Chicago will no longer be using the term freedom ride to describe the transport of an animal out of a shelter. As we listen and learn and consider ways that the rescue community in Chicago and beyond can become more inclusive and anti-racist, the phrase freedom ride is one of the first things that came to our minds. Historically, “freedom rides” describe coordinated efforts of civil rights activists throughout 1961. Freedom Riders wanted to draw attention to a recent federal law that declared segregation on interstate travel unconstitutional, a law that was largely ignored in Southern states. The first Freedom Ride was on May 4, 1961 from Washington DC to New Orleans. Riders met police resistance and mob brutality throughout their journey, calling international attention to how violence was used to enforce segregation and how little was done to carry out federal anti segregation laws. On November 6, 1919, the world’s first scheduled radio broadcast services known as PCGG began in Rotterdam, Netherlands. By the 1920s, half of urban families owned a radio and more than six million stations had been built. In the 1940s, families were listening to their radios hourly. Entertainment like music and sporting events could now be heard by anyone with a radio and gave accessibility to those who could not afford to see live events. The radio greatly impacted African Americans by giving access to entertainment that they were barred from seeing in person due to segregation laws. In the late 1940s, 94 percent of African American homes had at least one radio set, where families would listen to popular broadcasters such as Hal Jackson, who is known as the “first African American announcer on network radio,” as well as the 1940s radio series called Destination Freedom, which aired on a local Chicago NBC station. Destination Freedom was created by Richard Durham who wanted to create a narrative of African American history and bring to light African American poets, journalist, and labor organizers. Not only did radio shows such as Jackson’s and Durham’s provide political and social arguments and narratives, the radio also played an essential role in the Civil Rights Movement, where disc jockeys would relay information through radios on where roadblocks were, where the next boycott was taking place, and in protecting African Americans from misleading propaganda. Presently in 2020, we see the importance and influence of social media, radio, and television in relaying information on how to support one another. It is important to MOAH that our museum continues to show and connect the evolution, influence, and relevance of historic innovations to the technologies and society of the past and present.
