Design Emergency special! Alice Rawsthorn and I are the guest editors of the October issue of Wallpaper*, which you can now download for free from the magazine’s website. Guest creative director extraordinaire Frith Kerr designed the cover (you might recognize the unmistakable DE logo) and the DE section. Überphotographer Brigitte Lacombe took everybody’s portraits (via Zoom!) . Alice and I began this project in May, wishing to celebrate the power and range of design by interviewing on IG Live some of the protagonists of the Covid-19 pandemic response—and later on, those that are well positioned to inspire and lead the reconstruction. We wish to thank our colleagues at Wallpaper* for giving us the opportunity to spread the word wider and further. We are thrilled to announce that Perfidia by Sky Hopinka, co-published with the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College is now available for pre-order on our website (Link in bio). Sky Hopinkas Perfidia moves within the textured landscape of memory, both personal and collective, to address the founding colonial violence of the United States and its lasting impact. In a series of cantos, the book-length poem surfaces a first-person narrative amidst the stream of history and its accounting through the voices of ancestors and kin. Shifting registers between the embodied and the spiritual, Perfidias subjective syntax destabilizes entrenched colonial perspectives and concomitant descriptions of land, sky, sea, myth, place, and personhood. Perfidia sits at the center of Hopinkas most recent body of filmic work, which draws from the poems sixteen cantos and its previous iterations. These filmic works include the short film Lore (2019), the 2-channel video installation Cloudless Blue Egress of Summer (2019), the feature-length film maɬni (2020), and the photo series The Land Describes Itself (2019). Perfidia is published on the occasion of Hopinka’s solo exhibition Centers of Somewhere at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (October 17, 2020 – February 14, 2021). The publication features a foreword by CCS Bard Director of Graduate Programs and Chief Curator, Lauren Cornell, and an introduction by Los Angeles-based curator and critic, Julie Niemi, who initiated the project with Hopinka in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2019, and edited the book. Introducing one of our new editions : Opération Mur de l’Atlantique by Road Dogs, 2020. In the wake of digital over saturation, the written tradition seems to be an ancient relic, a dying habit, of which the closing of post offices bear-witness to this harsh reality. Counterclockwise from the overconnected ecosystem, this adventurous tale has been constructed through a transmission between two travelers and an still image-crafter. At every step of the journey : Stakeouts, lingerings, anticipations, and conquest text messages are send as form of smoke signals, whose preciousness is measured by their parsimony. These brief concise and synthetique text messages, are being transmittied to a recipient who interprets them and brings them to life. He then sculpts these shadow images of the adventure through this process of imaginative feedback. Jennie C. Jones “Unit Structures #1” (2019—20) departs from Jones’ characteristic muted gray palette of the last decade to draw upon a range of red hues made available by a specialty acoustic textile manufacturer. Like the intervals of jazz, the related bright and muted tones hit moments of dissonance and harmony through their repetition and variation. Central to Jones’ work since the 1990s is the uncovering of hidden histories of the avant-garde—in particular, bringing to light the contributions made by artists of color, particularly to Modernism and Minimalism. PROPAGANDA, décryptage de la rhétorique de limage. Projet de fin détude. Master de Direction artistique à Penninghen, Paris. En m’enseignant le graphisme et la direction artistique, on m’a placé un pouvoir entre les mains. Celui de manipuler les images. J’ai conscience que ce pouvoir peut être utilisé de la manière la plus noble comme la plus contestable. C’est pourquoi mon projet de fin d’étude traite de la propagande. Je m’interroge sur la manière dont l’émotion et les codes graphiques sont utilisés pour convaincre. La propagande étant l’origine même de mon métier, je ne pouvais entrer dans le monde professionnel sans en questionner ses mécanismes.
