Vannacht zo slecht geslapen door mijn schouder. Ja door mijn schouder en niet eens door mijn gebroken elleboog. Ik heb sinds een tijdje ook nog eens een ontsteking erbij en op zich ben ik aan het revalideren en dat ging heel goed tot vannacht weer. Stiekem denk ik dat ik weer teveel heb gedaan. Terwijl ik dit typ drink ik mijn groene theetje en heb ik mijn pyjama nog aan. De kids zijn net naar school en het is ineens muisstil. Ik ben geneigd om terug mijn bedje in te duiken maar dat ga ik niet doen. Ik trek zometeen mijn beste outfit aan, ga mezelf optutten en de gedachte hieraan zorgt ervoor dat ik me meteen al een stuk beter voel. Ja dat ga ik doen! Mum (pictured in the centre) turned a mighty 50-years-old today. One of the most poignant memories I have of her is the way she used to apply her red lipstick when I was a girl. She would daintily tuck away stray hairs from her bun, dab her lipstick onto her lips. A wide smile radiated from her face when she caught me staring in adoration from behind. If you ever saw that photo of a young Carrie Fisher captivated by her mother, Debbie Reynolds performing on stage as she sat mesmerised behind the curtain, that was me, only my mother, though not an actress herself, had the airs and graces of Madhuri Dixit and the dancing eyes of Juwi Chawla. So many children are afraid of living in the shadow of their parents, terrified of making the same mistakes they feel have coloured their childhood and bled into adulthood. And yet, the older I get, the more in awe I am of a woman who raised four children entirely by herself. Whatever empathy I have tried to weave into my writing, whatever strength I have, whatever lens I see the world through, comes from the invaluable foundations my mother helped me build. Whichever community we come from, single mothers are seen as leeches, stains to be bleached from society with the condescending detergents of “benefit scroungers” and other such language. I am unabashedly the proud daughter of this single mother, a Titan of a human being who was told she could never raise her children alone but did exactly that in spite of the naysayers. She uplifted my siblings and I our whole lives. AS a mother of three girls Maa shaa Allah and Alhumdullilah the common lines I have heard are : 🔅How many children you have and after my answer Maa shaa Allah in strange tone and koi nahi Allah beta be dey ga (don’t worry Allah will go you son as well) 🔅Go for another one this time it will be a boy 🔅Are you not going to try for a boy Such lines have been said to women in all cultures and the damage of that is that both men and women grow up thinking that if they don’t have a son they have somehow failed themselves and their parents and their whole lineage 😇Personal experience: Alhumdullilah my husband never wanted a son it sounds unreal but its true I had no pressure but somehow I always had in my mind that having a boy is must, what will people say if it’s a girl again e.t.c and I know many parents feel this pressure by society and it will not change until we as parents raise our children free of this girl boy bias 🔊Culture not religion: we must educate ourselves and our children that our religion came to end this stereotyping , yes men have a different roleplay in society and responsibility but they are in no way superior then women and having just daughters doesn’t end your lineage look at our prophet SAW he had no sons, and this thinking that only sons can carry the legacy is proven wrong. ❤How to Deal : ✔Forget about people, enjoy your pregnancy and your child 🌞Log kiya kahengey who cares ,sons will lookafter us in our old age is a myth. 🕌Have tawakal in Allah he knows whats best for us and he is our guardian . Do I regret being a mother? No Do I regret being the mother I was? Yes While I was pregnant, I read up on every single book about pregnancy and what to expect in the 4th trimester. I researched every blog and article out there on how to be the perfect mom. But I realised there is something called too much information. It got stuck in my head that I needed Sarah to be a certain way in order to make myself as the perfect mom and her as a perfect baby. Even before she was born, I kept track of milestones and was determined to achieve every single one of them. As expected, as soon as she was born, my worries started, was she the correct weight? Is her head the correct shape? Does she have jaundice? Is she feeding well? This was just the first day. Then started months of worry for me. I fussed over every single aspect of her development. I forgot to cuddle her, instead I focused on how to get her to reach her milestones. I cried everyday and every time someone mentioned her development, and because of all the stress I was going through, I became defensive. Anyone who told me to enjoy my time with her became my enemy because in my head it was “what about her development”. I hate to admit that I tortured my daughter, I made her cry just to fulfil my idea of a perfect baby. I was so obsessed with trying to be the best that I forgot that sarah would love me no matter what. She didn’t care about milestones, she cares about me and being with me. It took me a whole year to understand what a fool I was and how much I had missed out on. I tear up seeing her baby pictures and how I never saw how cute and adorable she was in her own way. From that day on, I made a promise, to always enjoy my time with her first, the rest all can wait. ⚜️ H A J J 2 0 1 8 ⚜️ An experience of a lifetime is truly an understatement. Initially, I was overwhelmed with the amount of women that would push and shove always rushing to get to our destination and I couldn’t quite fathom why they were so aggressive, when I’ve been accustomed to feeling like patiently waiting in a line is the norm. I met some amazing women from all over the world after conversing with them I realised it was not aggression that was displayed it was passion and dedication. You may ask why? Well coming from Australia- a developed country, if you are financially and physically able to perform hajj, you apply for a Visa, and you are Invited by Allah aswj then bi ithnillah you will go to Hajj. For the majority it is not that easy, some told us they’ve been on a waiting list for 5years while others have waited 20. We have the luxury of going as many times as we like and these brothers and sisters wait for many years knowing it will definitely be their first and last time. We have the luxury of travelling by plane, some travel by bus some even travel on foot for months to get to the Holy Land. After this was brought to my attention, I was saddened as I came to the realisation that I was truly not as grateful as I thought I was, and my NAFS was going to be tested extremely when it came to patience. Need I say this was the most amazing experience of my life that taught me so much about other people and most importantly I found myself more than ever, with a lot to work on back home which I feel is my umtilmate test of patience as we are surrounded by Fitna. Subhanallah how each one of us that was invited to perform Hajj this year, had something different to benefit and learn from the experience, while we all shared the same purpose and that is to Praise, Glorify and Worship Allah in Abundance, purify and discipline our NAFS, exercise patience all while following the footsteps of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad saw in completing a Pillar of our Faith. It felt so nice to dress up and match Maryam (totally did this on purpose!) No shame! And also omg my face, feet, everything is so swollen🥴 . Full disclosure: I do not look this glowy/good IRL - getting all the help from IG filters. Don’t want anyone to think any less of themselves if they’re pregnant, nursing, momming and feeling like this is is how things should be. It’s not! You’re all doing great mamas! . I’m in heavy nesting mode, getting clothes, diapers, bottles, etc ready for new baby to see me through the first 6 months so I’m not having to think of those things. . Things I’m doing differently this time around: 🔸Wearable breast pump (@willowpump) 🔸Snoo bassinet, at least for the first month to see how it works (@happiest_baby) 🔸Drop-in liner nurser bottles from @playtexbaby to minimize washing. Hopefully the baby likes the bottle🤞 🔸The @4moms.mamaroo swing thanks to my super generous SIL who’s giving me a lot of her baby things 🔸Extending the 4th trimester by trying out the @babyktan wrap . I’m also almoooost done with my summer studying so I have a little studying cut out of the school year (which technically ends mid-February!) . I was planning on potty training Maryam over the summer, but it’s gotten difficult for me to be at it 24/7 with being pregnant. So that will be postponed until Thanksgiving break😕 . Still enjoying the weather, thankful that NJ is opening up somewhat responsibly and even more grateful that my school is taking all the precautions and keeping our safety and our families safety in mind. . Almost one year ago, Shaza Irshad found out her developing babies had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). She was quickly rushed to the Ontario Fetal Centre, located at #MountSinaiToronto. Twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) occurs in 10-15 per cent of identical twin pregnancies, where the twins share one placenta. Just wanted to take a second and give a special shoutout to my Irish twin. The Yoda to my Darth Vader. The good to my evil. If you know my family on a personal level you know how she has always been the angel and I the devil. Growing up, my parents would always say to me “why can’t you be more like Mashal” lol. I always tell people I was raised by all girls because it was my mum and little sisters that raised me especially Mashal. Who needs brothers when I had sisters that I could never lose to in Portal Runner on PS2 💃🏽 Always been there for me to correct me whenever I made a stupid mistake in my life and trust me I’ve made A LOT of stupid mistakes lol. Every time I mess up or need help with anything the first person I always go to is my Irish twin. I’m older by 11 months, but I’m the one that always looked up to her and envied her. I’m close to my religion because of her. Anything good about me is most likely because of her lol. - Nuclear vs. Extended families- . Hubby has gone back to Dallas while Ibrahim and I hang back in Toronto for a few more weeks. . One of the biggest differences between Toronto and Dallas is the sheer number of people in the house. In Dallas, were used to the quiet with most of the noise coming from Ibrahim and myself. In Toronto, he’s coming to terms with 2 uncles, an aunt and a grandmother. And most of all, an exciting older cousin who he follows around ALL day long. . He’s constantly tossed around or picked up and attacked with kisses by his uncles and aunt, and offered various bribery from his grandmother. . Seeing him in a new environment is refreshing and it makes me realize how different it is for children who grow up in nuclear versus extended families. . Factors such as flexibility, patience, family bonding are all affected by our household setup. Have you noticed such differences?
