This autumn marks 40 years since Ivor and Susie pressed the first traditional varieties of unsprayed cider apples delivered in 25k g sacks from small, local farms to Hays Head, Pembridge, beginning our #organic journey. · At that time the large industrial cider makers were pressing less English cider apples and were becoming increasingly dependent on imported apple concentrate made from dessert fruit. As Susie and Ivor travelled the county they saw productive orchards with the fruit rotting on the ground · In the 1970s the cider market in Britain was controlled by a small number of enormous cider producers; nearly all the small-scale, farmgate selling cider makers were located in the south-west in Somerset and Devon. Herefordshire had been one of the main growers of cider varieties for centuries. Initially in Herefordshire the bulk of the fruit was pressed and fermented for domestic consumption. Then, nearly three hundred years ago, in 1727, Symonds Cider and English Wine Company of Stoke Lacy was founded. Over a hundred and fifty years later two more large-scale commercial cider businesses were established in Herefordshire and gradually farmhouse production declined and nearly all the apples harvested were sold to these producers or to industrial cider makers in other parts of the country. · In 1980 Ivor and Susie, with machinery last used generations ago, and an old half-timbered granary reconstructed on site to be the cider shop, milled and pressed ancient, unsprayed varieties of cider apples such as Foxwhelp, Brown Snout and Frequin Rouge, all picked separately in small quantities, from a museum orchard along the lane at Broxwood and other local farms. This allowed Susie and Ivor to understand the individual characteristics of the various varieties. THE BORDERS, SCOTLAND⁣ ⁣ I had been travelling in the border country and from a busy road I saw this post and rail fence and was immediately compelled to turn round and retrace my steps.⁣ This fence was so much more than a mere structure. It was a masterpiece . I wished to meet the person who made this work, to encourage them to talk me through it, to acquaint me with every hazard, every joy of its construction and o know something of their elation at the end of their toils. Like the autumn ploughman looking back at his furrows so accurately aligned, there is pleasure in accuracy.⁣ Once there was a type of film available with a dedicated speed of one thousand asa. It had certain applications and its boost was grain and accordingly low contrast. Like many I cared for it deeply. Sadly, it was withdrawn, but a few months beforehand, a photographer friend in the USA panicked and acquired a thousand rolls, such was his addiction. ⁣ I had not waned to use a fine grain film here. The wooden fence I felt should not appear too invasive upon the land. I hoped that the coarseness of the film would unify fence, hill and grass.The wood of the fence had weathered, and its warm silvery grey sat well on the slope of the November grass. I was treated to some fantastic light a few days ago while visiting some wetlands near Raymond, Nebraska. The first photo is of a saline wetland with a large population of the state endangered saltwort. The second photo is of a hillside wetland that is fed by a freshwater seep. These two wetlands are only a few hundred yards apart, but they have dramatically different plant communities due to their differences in salinity. The saline wetland gets its salinity from underlying groundwater that has high concentrations of salt. In the areas with the highest salinity, only a select few plant species, such as the endangered saltwort, are able to grow. The plant community in the freshwater wetland is more diverse than the surrounding saline wetlands and is home to taller plant species, such as blue vervain. Have you ever been to Oso Flaco Lake near Nipomo?⠀ ⠀ Oso Flaco Lake is one of the most beautiful places we’ve discovered on our adventures, and a total hidden gem in the farthest southwest corner of SLO County! ⠀ ⠀ Located east of Nipomo on Oso Flaco Road, the lake is a hugely popular destination for fishing and hiking with locals, and offers some of the most stunning views from the boardwalk that crosses over the water. The boardwalk also continues west past the lake, which you can follow all the way out to the Pacific Ocean and Oceano Dunes! ⠀ ⠀ The entire boardwalk trail is only 1.5 miles, and mostly flat making it an easy hike for the whole family. Our Oregons Greatest Wetland of the month for September is Jackson-Frazier Wetlands. The wetland was established as part of Benton County Parks in 1992, and offers easy access in the Corvallis area. Several types of wetlands are represented, including wet prairie, ponds, and shrub-scrub. Water Hyacinth in their dawn parade with the tide and wind down Little Carencro Bayou or on some maps Little Carrion Crow Bayou. I believe Carencro may be the Cajun French word for a vulture. I got to visit this bayou just north of Fourleague bay in Terrebonne Parish a few years ago and it is in a unique place, perched between the growing land at the mouth of the Atchafalaya Bay and the quickly disappearing marshes and cypress swamps to the east and north toward Bayou Black where we came from. - @rushjagoe on Instagram
