MCIAA’s massive, poetic, philosophical and iconoclastic body of work–claimed as “future, future, future” by critic and writer David Keenan–earned them the cover of The Wire magazine. Since the beginning the duo also dedicated themselves to several private press releases, ultra-limited art editions and art objects on their own Opax Records imprint. MCIAA’s live debut happened when Sonic Youth invited them to open their European tour in 1998. „Baru – czworonożna himalaistka” 🐶 Trudno powiedzieć, jaki jest rekord wysokości zdobytej przez psa, ale wszystko wskazuje na to, że należy on do Baru, bezdomnej suczki, która weszła na położony w Himalajach siedmiotysięcznik Baruntse (7129 m n.p.m.). ⛰ Głównymi bohaterami tej historii są On i Ona. On to Don Wargowsky, Amerykanin o jakże swojsko dla nas brzmiącym nazwisku. […] Don kocha góry, więc w ramach łączenia pasji z pracą prowadzi klientów przeważnie na wulkany w amerykańskim stanie Washington, a poza tym na Denali i na Aconcaguę. Jeśli chodzi o Himalaje, ma na koncie Island Peak, Ama Dablam i parę innych szczytów, zaś z ośmiotysięczników – Manaslu. No dobrze, a Ona? Ma na imię Baru, choć wcześniej nazwali ją Mera. 🐕 A tak dokładniej ma cztery łapy i jest określana jako tybetański pies pasterski, choć „pasterski” to tylko teoria. 😉 Był listopad 2018 roku, gdy Wargowsky prowadził w Himalajach wyprawę, której pierwszym celem był Mera Peak, łatwy technicznie sześciotysięcznik (6476 m), który ekipa bez problemu zdobyła. Już na zejściu, ni stąd, ni zowąd, przy wspinaczach pojawił się sympatyczny czworonóg. Będący miłośnikiem psów Don (w domu w Seattle ma psa) szybko skojarzył, że wcześniej już go (a właściwie ją) widział – w jednej z wiosek, 2000 metrów niżej. Tylko że tam suczka bała się ludzi, podczas gdy teraz, jakby wyczuwając, że nikt nie ma serca jej przeganiać, z wyraźną radością skakała koło swoich nowych znajomych. Natrętna jednak nie była. Pierwszy raz, gdy dostała zaproszenie do namiotu, grzecznie pozostała na zewnątrz, chociaż rano Don znalazł ją zwiniętą w kłębek, przysypaną śniegiem i wyraźnie zmarzniętą. They can drink up to 7ml of the precious stuff per day. In perspective, that’s like us drinking 50 litres! 🥤 The Honey Possum’s tail is prehensile meaning it can grasp branches which enables it to move nimbly through vegetation. She had bad burns on all four paws, was filthy and clearly traumatized. 🦨 We gently cleaned her paws, put on a medicated cream, gave her pain medication and antibiotics. Unfortunately, she didn’t make it through the night. 💔 She represents thousands of animals which were killed or displaced by the wildfires in southern Oregon. Nuts About Conservation P H O T O @troywoodwildlife S P E C I E S : Vancouver Island Marmot (Marmota vancouverensis) Critically Endangered I N F O: This marmot naturally occurs ONLY in the high mountains of Vancouver Island, in the British Columbia. 🇨🇦 It can be easily distinguished from other marmots by its rich, chocolate brown fur and contrasting white patches They are herbivores residing in alpine meadows dispersing after maturing to new areas suited to them through natural habitat clearance. Most marmots live above 1000 metres elevation in meadows that face south to west. T H E I S S U ES: Habitat scarceness is believed to be the primary reason for their decline. Climate changes have caused both increases and declines of open alpine habitat that constitute suitable habitat. Rapid forest regeneration makes man-made habitats unsuitable over a few years CONSERVATION EFFORTS: Due to the efforts of the recovery program, the marmot count in the wild increased from less than 30 wild marmots in 2003, to an estimated 250–300 in 2015 The Marmot Recovery Foundation works alongside stakeholders, landowners and Calgary & Toronto Zoo. The recovery goal set up in 2017 aims to achieve 2 populations that are linked geographically using captive bred individuals (which has levels of success with individuals surviving one or two hibernations). A Short-tailed Weasel with a Meadow Vole kill. I had setup along a creek to photograph some Kinglets that were gathering food for their young. After about 45 minutes of being decimated by mosquitoes, I saw a small body bobbing through the grasses. I was confused at first, as the mystery animals shape made no sense. But as it got closer, I was able to tell it was a small mustelid with a big kill blocking most of its face. I dropped to the ground and fired off a few shots before this beautiful Short-tailed Weasel made its way into the taller grasses. Last summer, and for the past two months, Ive never encountered this species. Now Ive had 2 sightings in the past 2 days, both times they were hunting voles. Rats are often associated with disease, sewage and trash, but the viral story of a brave rodent in Cambodia has changed mindsets overnight. Born in Tanzania, Magawa is a 5-year-old African giant pouched rat who can detect deadly unexploded ordnance lying hidden in the jungles and open fields across Cambodia, the second most landmine-affected country after Afghanistan. From the unexploded bombs dropped during the Vietnam war, to the landmines laid by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and in decades of civil conflict that followed, Cambodia has more than 25,000 mine amputees, the largest per capita in the world. But in a span of four years, Magawa - which means courage - has located an impressive 39 active landmines and 28 unexploded munitions. He has helped clear more than 1.5 million square feet of land, the size of 20 football fields, saving tens of thousands from maiming and death in the process. And last week he became the first rat ever to receive a gold medal award for “life-saving bravery and devotion to duty” in the field. “For every landmine or unexploded remnant Magawa finds, he eradicates the risk of death or serious injury. His dedication, skill and bravery are extraordinary examples and deserve the highest possible recognition,” said Jan McLoughlin, director-general of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) British charity at a virtual ceremony on Friday, Sept. 25, honoring the rat’s incredible achievements. Snow Leopards keep patrolling their territory, and one of the ways they mark their land is by spraying urine and scent on stones. In this image, a Snow Leopard approaches a scent marking location early in the morning and triggers the camera trap to make this composition. Here, one can see the Snow leopard, which is a meter away from the camera, the temple which is more than a kilometer away, and the snow-clad mountain peaks that are more than 20 kilometers away. In such a vast landscape, this Snow Leopard completely merges with the background that makes it tricky to spot one in the absence of Snow. How cute is this animal? When hiking in steep talus slopes of the park, you may hear high-pitched squeaks among the rocks. That would be the pika. Pika are the cutest of all the cute animals and, although they look like rodents, they are in the order Lagomorpha and are closely related to the rabbit. Wildlife biology is my passion, and I have the privilege of doing this work—a privilege I have because I am white. There are major inequities in the work I do, and a career in wildlife biology is largely inaccessible to POC, in particular those who are black. Only 1% of wildlife degrees are awarded to black students (including foreign students; US Dept of Ed., NCES), while 13% of the US workforce are African American (US BLS). Geographic and economic disparities between blacks and whites—all products of decades of systemic racism—limit access to the education and experience needed to do this kind of work.This is an issue (among many others) created by white people to protect our power. Claims of nature is for everyone are false when white culture has guarded the outdoors as our own. THIS HAS TO STOP! To my white friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to reflect on our privilege; think about how we are provided opportunities not given to POC; educate ourselves on systemic racism, understand it, acknowledge we benefit from it, and take action to make change. For a start, listen to the Seeing White podcast by Scene on Radio, read White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo, support organizations at the frontlines of the fight, such as @ywcampls @aclu_nationwide @headwatersfdn and @artemis_sportswomen , and most importantly, continue to discuss these issues with the people of your community. Einige von haben es richtig geraten: Es sind die Murmeltiere, welche bereits in ihr Winterquartier gezogen sind! 🎊😄 Aber moment - es ist doch erst Herbst? 🍂 Ja. Doch den Impuls zum Schlafen geben nicht winterliche Temperaturen oder Nahrungsmangel. ❄️🌾 Vielmehr spielen der Jahresrhythmus der «inneren Uhr» 🕙, hormonelle Umstellungen und die Tageslänge eine Rolle. Den Winterschlaf halten die Murmeltiere dann doch aufgrund der kommenden kalten Temperaturen und den Mangel an Nahrung. Ihre Körpertemperatur fällt dabei auf ca. 5 Grad Celsius ab und das Herz schlägt nur noch 1 – 3 Mal pro Minute (normalerweise 100 Schläge pro Minute). 😲 Um diese 6 Monate zu überleben, fressen sie sich den ganzen Sommer mit Gräsern und Kräutern voll, da sie im Frühling nur noch 50- 70 % ihres Körpergewichtes besitzen.
