Chinese Mythology（八仙过海） When the Eight Genii Crossed the Sea, Each of Them Displayed His Her Prowess.This allusion is from a folk legend concerning the Eight (Taoist) Immortals crossing the sea at the same time.The legend has many versions.The “eight immortals” are from Taoist mythology and among the best known deities. They are the symbols for good fortune throughout China.The earliest descriptions date from the Tang Dynasty (early 7th century),but their present grouping was not established until the Ming Dynasty (founded in 1368).The immortals are： Zhang Guo-lao, Lu Dong-bin, Cao Guo-jiu, Han Zhongli, Li Tie-guai, Han Xian-zi, He Xian-gu, and Lan Cai-he.The Eight Immortals are a favorite theme of artists and are portrayed on fans and porcelain.They also figure prominently in many literary works.It is said when they crossed the sea at the same time, each displayed his/her own supernatural prowess.Later, this idiom has been used to refer to those who have their respective means or skills to vie with each other.#Chinese #China #mythstory #story - @chinese on Instagram

Dorothy Height was one of the leading female voices of the 1960s Civil Rights movement, and is credited by President Obama as “the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement.” Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1912, Heights was an outspoken activist throughout her life, and witnessed both the ratification of the 19th Amendment as well as the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which finally granted her, as a black woman, access to the vote. Height led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years, and was the president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which was on the front lines of the Suffrage movement. She led the NCNW (The National Council of Negro Women) and was also an influential leader of the Young Womens Christian Association (YWCA). In 1994 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She continues to be an inspirational figure in the history of the fight for equal rights for all ages, genders, and diversities. On the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, and the 55th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, we are honoring some of the incredible women in America’s history who have fought for the rights of the disenfranchised, and been stewards for change in this country. A film which offers a subtle, devastating study of the life of a woman in postwar Japan played by film star Hideko Takamine. Films are often available online for free, on DVD or on BFI player which this year is celebrating Japan 2020, a special season on Japanese cinema. Dogs have always held a special place in Japanese art and literature. In The Tale of Genji, The Pillow Book and other noteworthy literature from the Heian period (794–1185 CE), dogs are often seen frolicking about as the stories unfold. Authors during the Edo period (1603–1868 CE) imbued their canine characters with human attributes, and adorable depictions of dogs became popular subject matter for art. Some of the foremost painters of the Edo period, like Ito Jakuchu, Tawaraya Sotatsu and Yosa Buson, frequently depicted dogs in their work. Referred to as Okyos Puppies, the rolly-polly pups of artist Maruyama Okyo with their guileless expressions and all manner of playful poses have captured the hearts of dog lovers both at home and abroad since the Edo period.
