Youve seen our Peel Trident and our Peel P50... But have you ever seen our 1964 Peel Viking??? #FunFact Most people associate Peel Engineering with the building of fiberglass bike fairings and microcars. Peel also made a couple of different car models based on then-current production cars’ running gear. The car seen here is a Peel Viking, which is one of only seven left known to exist. Peel actually never produced the whole car; they would sell the fiberglass body and the buyer had to find a junked Mini to take the drivetrain and brakes from. Many other parts were borrowed straight from the Mini such as the steering wheel, doors and windows. Although it was a nice-looking and practical car, it did not sell and production hardly got started before it stopped. Over the years, we’ve seen some pretty incredible cars. Yet, every once in a while, something completely surprises us. Our newest project has done just that. Following is the awesome story behind the Allied Swallow... . As the story goes: Robert Petersen (of Hot Rod Magazine/Petersen Museum fame) had a Cisitalia 202 which he brought to famed car builder George Barris to get a color change before the 1952 Motorama. While at the shop, none other than Mickey Thompson, Billy Burke (famed racer and the man behind the first bellytanker) and Roy Kinch (founder of Atlas fiberglass) - eh, hem - “borrowed” the car - and made an exact mold of it. This “mold” became the Allied Swallow. The partners felt the beauty and fame of the Cisitalia, combined with the new fiberglass technology, would attract buyers. Ultimately, around 25 bodies were made. . The body in the pictures is one of the 25. . Traditionally, these bodies were mated to an MG TD chassis (although other exotic chassis/engine combos have been documented - like a Swallow with a Kurtis 500 chassis and one with a chopped in half Duesenberg straight-eight! In 1953, Billy Burke drove a modified Swallow at the Bonneville Salt Flats setting a new record at 167 MPH for closed sports cars!). . These cars are incredibly rare - one appeared at the Amelia Island Concours in 2010 and again at the Pebble Beach Concours in 2019. Amazingly the Petersen Museum recently had a Swallow on display with Petersens original Cisitalia - the very Cisi that was used for the mold back in ‘52! . We are building this Swallow as if we were back in 1952. Our photos show the as-delivered body, the MG TD chassis we sourced (along with matching number XPAG engine) and the body roughly placed on the chassis. . The last #tonuptuesday of 2014 comes all the way from Ukraine. Андрей Рахуба (we can’t pronounce it either) turned this 1967 Jawa 350 motocross bike into a tidy little street racer. In 1972 and 1973, you could order an incredible set of alternate bodywork for CL350 or CL450 models - an idea that came from Hondas paint department because they figured these crazy Americans were obsessed with tie dye, and some would want a similar scheme on their motorcycles. The Flying Dragon was born.⠀ ⠀ It seems that 4 variants of the Flying Dragon scheme were offered, but all were unpopular. Funny how that works now - 40 years later these rare paint jobs command a steep premium. I would have thought this was an idea from @honda_powersports_us, but thanks to part numbers fans have been able to confirm that this was indeed thought up at Honda Japan.⠀ ⠀ This example (VIN: CB350-5010166) has 8,782 miles and it was originally equipped with orange bodywork. It was recently serviced to include tune up, oil change, carburetor clean and new battery. Obviously, the big thing here is the bodywork, which is New Old Stock and has not seen a drop of gas.
