Château Simone Blanc is a wine that emerges slowly and deliberately from its youthful cocoon, eventually revealing startling depth and easily outlasting its red counterpart. Dense and viscous upon release, it typically begins to unfurl around four or five years past harvest, with glimmers of Provencal herbs and raw almonds peeking out from its profoundly mineral-driven vortex. An unmistakable note of pine resin, speaking to the forests which surround the vineyards, amplifies with age, and the limestone which throws uppercuts in youth turns to something more refined, long, and graceful, keeping the wine focused and linear as its other elements spread their wings. Then, at around eight years past vintage, Simone Blanc shifts into overdrive, with notes of marzipan, fresh cream, and nougat locking into formation with the emerging pine character and the blossoming lemon-curd fruit element in a vibrant dance that points toward a shockingly long evolution. Whether with the people of the Congo or chefs in Los Angeles Koreatown, you get the sense that hes paying attention. Its not a routine or schtick, and we got to see that up close and personal.” - Steve Hurlburt [This older CNN piece by @steve.hurlburt (linked in bio) got me thinking. Thanks Steve.] When people would see Tony in a place, the same place that they were, they often professed disbelief. They couldn’t grasp the idea that world famous TV personality, celebrated writer, celebrity chef, cultural ambassador Anthony Bourdain was in the same place that they found themselves in. I would usually say something like “Well have you seen the show? It’s about people in places. Real people and real places. Currently it’s this place. The same one that you are in.” Then they were usually surprised that this person, the one that they admired, maybe even idolized, was so much like the personality from his television shows. So I would continue with something like “What were you expecting him to be like? It’s not acting. That’s just him, with his thoughts, being himself. But you know, being himself in this place.” As they tried to wrap their mind around the reality of Tony, I would challenge them and say “Could you do me a favor? Next time you come into this place, look around the room and realize it is an interesting place, full of interesting people. Really interesting people. Choose one of them. Someone that you don’t know, or maybe someone you don’t know so well. Buy them a drink. Sit with them. Have a conversation. Listen to them. Share your thoughts. Start the conversation anywhere; ask about their drink of choice, or how they came to choose this place. Then steer the conversation towards the things that person really wants to talk about. Imagine yourself as Anthony Bourdain. Put yourself in his shoes. Be curious. Dig deep. Recognize the interaction with a bartender or a waiter as a collaboration. Engage the people around you. J’vais me chercher un café, 3 minutes chrono, je reviens, 1 appel en absence, pas de message, je rappelle et la voix à l’autre bout du fil me lance « Ah Romain salut c’est Nikos Aliagas, ça va tu vas bien t’es en forme, dis moi, une amie à moi @daphnez va monter une expo en hommage aux victimes des attentats de l’an dernier, sur le thème de la liberté, des terrasses, on voudrait que tu fasses partie de l’expo, t’es ok ? »... «Euh ouais...bien sûr...euh... », j’ai l’air con, je le sais, je remercie, on discute un peu, « bon bah rendez à l’expo dans 1 mois ». It’s been 180 days since my last “real” show with real human connection, real emotion and real love. I take so much pride in what I give to an audience each night on stage and I always look at each show as if it could be my last and that evening 180 days ago I knew it likely would be for some time. My last performance of “In Plain Sleight” at Liberty Magic was one I wasn’t expecting to be doing in the first place but I took in every second because I personally knew while sitting backstage it would be a much longer time until I had that real audience connection again. The day prior I was informed that the artist on stage at Liberty was not feeling well and if I could take over the remaining run of shows starting the next night just in case that artist had Covid. I knew at that very moment that I would be doing the last show at Liberty Magic in 2020. That next night in Pittsburgh for me was truly the most unique experiences in my career and I have done a lot of crazy stuff. I decided to vier off script and talk to the audience about what we were all experiencing in the world, how it was going to change all of our lives and what tomorrow could look like. I made at the time some crazy changes on the fly to my script and routines. I was creating a socially distant magic show backstage minutes before curtain call with lots of work arounds to moments with audience interactions that couldn’t take place now. I made it work and choose audience safety over inconvenience for myself that night. When the show reached its conclusion and I had to walk backstage instead of doing a meet and greet and shaking every hand and thanking every Pittsburgher for coming and their support like every show before it. I was incredibly bummed at this moment. The reality was setting in...the show would not go on. So what’s next? Well that’s what I have been working on the last 6 months. To begin with I will be doing a virtual experience of my show 52 Up Close with tickets going on sale now. I also will be headlining the City Theater’s Drive In Arts festival this Sunday night and I will performing the socially distant version of “In Plain Sleight” I worked on that crazy night 6 months ago. - @leeterbosic on Instagram
