This year I set a goal to harvest 3 pronghorn in 3 states with a stick bow and Monday evening I was able to finish that goal with a great pope and young buck here in my home state of Nebraska! This was also a great illustration of the way I hunt. I think a lot of people are under the misconception that I only hunt private land or with a guide, but I do it all. First up my Wyo goat was a drawn tag with 0 points and I DIY hunted public ground over water that I scouted and set up. My second goat was in South Dakota hunting private ground with my outfitter buddy, @routieroutfitting over a small water tank. My last antelope was DIY on a private piece here in NE where I had to belly crawl into my blind, that I scoured and set up, and wait 12 hrs with no food or water for my goat to come through the fence crossing. All I can say is if all you hunt is public land, private, or with outfitters don’t look down on another person for where, or the way they hunt, as long as it’s done ethically and legally, it’s all fun and presents it’s own challenges! #antelope #antelopehunting #huntinghattrick #huntyourway - @jake_d_downs on Instagram

Not everyone’s into hunting, I get it...but everyone can relate to goal setting, overcoming failures and finally succeeding in a dream. Nevin scouted for high country mule deer most of the summer, with a goal to take a mature buck with a bow. He accomplished his dream yesterday. On top of a mountain just under 11,000ft he took 2 hours to stalk up to 30 yards. Everything has to come together just perfectly. My uncle JD, Pėhévenahāne (Good Killer) began his journey across the Milky Way to Séáne (Happy Hunting Grounds) today. I would be remiss to not revisit these photos I took, and never shared, from one of the most incredible adventures I’ve ever been on. Almost a year since has passed since I even looked at these. Almost 40 hours of non-stop travel via car, plane, and horse all to arrive to base camp at 13,000 feet. The people of Kyrgyzstan are incredible horseman. They endure altitude and conditions that aren’t for the faint of heart. The culture in this remote area bordering China is reminiscent of a more simple time. A simplicity maybe most have difficulty in truly appreciating. But the burning lungs, tired legs, and jet lag is well worth this experience. 7 days, 6 nights, 79 miles, 1257 flights climbed, 2 shots taken, no animals down, 5 bulls called in, multiple adrenaline dumps, and much more. • Just very grateful for the experience, the time in nature, and pushing my body to its limits. • There’s no doubt that being as lean as you can, implementing foot on ground endurance work, proper nutrition and hydration can make you move so much faster and better in the mountains. • Last hunting season 203lbs, chronic knee pain, wrecked multiple days after- this year 178lbs, running 30+ miles a week and no knee pain after 7 days brutalization. • Where ever you want your fitness to take you, you have to have the vision, the goals that can be reverse engineered, and lastly, your sweat equity.
