#neverforget Repost from @harrybensoncbe • September 11, 2001 It was a slow news day and the Today Show had started a segment on cooking or gardening, I can’t remember exactly, but Gigi and I cut off the television. Less than five minutes later, Gigi’s brother, Dan Daniels, called from Texas to ask what was going on up in New York. We had no idea what he was talking about, but turned the television back on just in time to see the second plane hit the Twin Towers. Immediately I picked up a camera and headed downtown. Both Towers had fallen, and the area was cordoned off by the time I got there, but I walked across the Manhattan Bridge and took the photograph of the Brooklyn Bridge with the burning Towers in the background. People were walking silently across the bridges as the world watched in horror. The next day the press passes that were allowed behind the barriers were shocking pink, and I remember I had one the same color that was 10 years old. Instead of standing in line for hours to get a new press pass, I just turned mine over so the year didn’t show and used it. I would probably have been arrested if anyone had looked very closely at the date. I happened upon Ammo, a German Shepherd, who was searching for bodies in the rubble. The dog was exhausted and collapsed in front of me. His trainer carried him into a portable First Aid Station where Ammo was given glucose and allowed to rest until he was ready to begin again. The weary firemen and policemen were the extraordinary heroes of the day working around the clock as they tried desperately to find survivors and put out the fire on the rubble where the beautiful World Trade Towers had stood. I asked a group of them what to do if a fire breaks out. In unison about eight answered, “Run.” - @samantharonson on Instagram

I was a young lawyer in New York City advising on Wall Street deals. Egregious corporate scandals & a funky stock market iced the half billion dollar deal I was working on. So late on September 10, I received word that my meetings in the twin towers on the morning of September 11 were canceled. I went out to dinner that night with my dear friends @staceybnyc & @dkaysf. Sushi on the upper east side in the midst of pouring rain and youthful dreams. Rain that gave way to a brilliant autumn morning... dreams that in the aftermath gave way to hope. Hope that we could move on from the trauma, shock and pain of a day on which we lost friends, colleagues, and our sense of security. But I didn’t lose my life. I didn’t lose my sense of the possible. My sense of justice. My sense of what we could be if we chose to stand together. We pulled our friends and family close and we went back to work, to rebuild our country and our lives. I didn’t imagine then that our country might experience something a magnitude of 66 times worse than 9/11. Nor did I imagine that we would ever permit division, selfishness & greed to result in the needless death of 200,000 Americans. I didn’t imagine that I would be physically isolated, hundreds of miles away from my family and friends, or that human beings would traumatize one another by their selfishness, fear, insecurity and scapegoating in ways that would imperil the life and security of others. Back then I thought I knew what struggle was. The past four years and specifically the last seven months have taught me that I was wrong. Back then, without experiencing how hard life could get, I prided myself on my resilience, persistent endurance, faith. It is easy to be resilient when surrounded by family and friends, when you have health insurance, financial security and a good paying job-dignity in work. It is much harder to be resilient when the opposite is true. When the end of suffering isn’t in sight. And yet, despite the profound hardship facing so many of us today, I know that hope must resist the allure of despair. After all, it is all some of us have left. As they were being built, The Twin Towers of The World Trade Center Complex were quickly poked fun at for resembling 2 filing cabinets. But soon after completion, in 1973, they became a world icon and gave every New Yorker a sense of pride. As you crossed the Hudson into Manhattan they dwarfed all the surrounding buildings and defined the NY Skyline for 28 years. Its hard to believe that 19 years have passed since they came crumbling down. That image burned into our memory, a sad day for NY and all of America. With everything going on in the world these days, it’s important we reflect on that fatal day to not only remember all of the innocent lives lost but also the sense patriotism & UNITY it brought to us as a Nation. I had a whole other post. I wrote it up and had the pics and got distracted and lost it. So here’s what I got now: I’m grateful. A lot of people were lost on that fateful day 19 years ago, and a lot of good people lost good people. I’m grateful to have my family that was directly affected or physically there. We won’t ever forget that day. Where we were, what we were doing. The aftermath. The change of skyline. The exodus and now reminiscent empty city blocks months later. Tell someone you love em today. The words “Never Forget” have become a seasonal phrase. Like Happy Halloween, or Merry Christmas we only say it, think of it and remember why we say it around today. 19 years later a nation has forgotten. We have forgotten our solemn promise to Never Forget. We forgot the sacrifice of our Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters who ran into burning buildings to save complete strangers, only to do it over and over, in complete disregard for their own lives. We forgot the some 200 souls who leapt to their deaths rather than face the fire at their back. We forgot the fighting spirit of Flight 93 who showed those cowardly Terrorists, that Americans are NOT victims, and we will NOT go without a fight. We forgot that amongst the carnage and debris for a short time we were One Nation Indivisible. We were united as Americans. We forgot our promise to our men and women of our warrior class. The same men and women now in their late 30’s and early 40’s were babies back then barely in their 20’s...now as middle age approaches illness is taking hold. Illnesses that do not belong in bodies of this age group. We have let time dull our vision and soften our memories. We have forgotten that “Never Forget” means exactly that.
