Time for a residency update! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m currently in the middle of my hand surgery rotation! Thankfully, we’ve started doing elective surgery cases again in Winnipeg, Manitoba so I’ve actually been able to get in the OR a few times the past few weeks! Hand surgery is a subspecialty within orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery. In terms of consults in the Emergency Department, plastic surgery covers anything hand related therefore our exposure to hand acute pathology and surgery is a little more limited. All to say that the past few weeks I have learned SO MUCH! The amount of muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, arteries and veins in the hand and forearm is INSANE. It is slightly overwhelming how much anatomy there is only a define part of one’s body but making an effort to do some reading every day and bits and pieces seem to be sticking in my brain which is promising. There is an astonishing amount of variety in hand/forearm pathology and types of surgeries that makes this subspecialty quite interesting. More on what I’ve seen in clinic and in the OR in a future post! I almost didnt end up getting Gracie (my new puppy).... I had been talking about getting a dog for years. I thought about it (more like OVERthought about it) for so long. I thought of every excuse as to why now wasnt the right time... I didnt want to give up my freedom I was worried about taking care of it all by myself I wasnt sure I could do it financially All of those excuses were based around fear of the unknown. Around change. Finally, a few months ago... I decided it was time. I did some research, found a breed I liked and reached out to breeders. Then, when the time came that there was a puppy for me, I panicked. All those excuses came flooding back to me.... Maybe I should wait a few more months Maybe I should wait for a boy instead of a girl Maybe.... But, it really was perfect timing. Everything aligned. And I leaned into the fear. Because, really: If not now, when? Such a great question. Even though Im only a few days into being a dog owner, and it feels overwhelming at times, I am so glad I didnt put it off any longer. When you aren’t open to receiving and hearing from the other side, you are inhibiting the relationship, communication, growth, and life that you both can have. I had the privilege of being on a panel today put on by @christinehassler and @stefanossifandos for women who had spent the last 5 months taking a deep dive into themselves, their insecurities, their wounds, and their perceived limitations. As I was on the panel it really sank in that this kind of honest and loving container is what we as men need in order for us to feel safe to open up and our partners to feel safe and open up. Manly is being able to realize the limitations you have placed on yourself, through conditioning and of your own volition, and open that up for conversation. These women want conscious supporters in their life and most men want the same thing. The problem is, we love to hold ourselves back from this because we are afraid to be seen. Because being seen means we have to be open. But you know what’s scarier a than being open? Living your life running away from yourself and those who love you and supressing the potential, the honesty, and the authenticity within, all so you can meet a social norm. Start being the conscious man who takes pride in his masculinity and power but who can also know when loving space and honest conversations need to be cultivated. As @larabriden says in her book Period Repair Manual, a period is not a definite sign of ovulation. You can identify ovulation by a rise in your waking basal body temperature. After you ovulate, the hormone progesterone will increase and cause a rise in your temperature. Your temperature will stay raised until your next period. It’s so amazing to see this shift clearly when charting your cycle! You could also take a mid-luteal phase blood test to test for a rise in progesterone. Ich dachte immer man kann diesen Bereich nicht hübsch gestalten, aber nun bin ich sehr happy. Besonders toll finde ich den wunderschönen #flowerstone von @bloomon.de . Die Verarbeitung ist einfach so hochwertig. Geliefert wurde ein handgefertigter Keramikstein und getrocknete Blumen. Es kann sich also ganz individuell ein hübsches Blumenarrangement gestalten werden. Es lohnt sich unbedingt bei @bloomon.de vorbeizuschauen. Auch der Versand von frischen Blumen ist möglich. Here’s Raphidophora korthalsii ( kor thal see eye) in my Bali TV room, growing on Tree Fern panels because moss breaks down way too fast in the equatorial tropics. People often ask me “can I use coir fiber for my totems”? Of course you can but the purpose of a totem in an indoor environment is twofold, it acts as a support but also it needs to encourage delicate aerial roots to form and grow into it by creating a microclimate around the growing stem(s). I have found tightly packed Sphagnum moss much better at this. In the tropics because of high humidity, aerial roots will grow and attach to virtually anything, in a dryer environment they have more trouble, you don’t need to keep the totem permanently moist, just wet it thoroughly whenever you water the plant, even if it looks dry on the outside, moisture remains inside for longer and believe me, roots know where there is hidden moisture. Und dann musste ich gerade selbst so lachen, weil ich mich genau null so fühle wie auf dem Foto und mir gerade auch keine inspirierende Geschichte einfällt 😂🙈 ich bin gerade einfach nur müde und erschöpft. Ich weiß nicht genau, was Carlo heute Nacht hatte, aber er hat so viel geweint und ich durfte ihn keine Sekunde aus meinem Arm legen, gefühlt haben wir beide vielleicht eine Stunde geschlafen und ich hab das Gefühl mich hätte ein Laster überrollt. Die Sache ist die, Schlaf ist für mich wichtiger als essen oder trinken. Wenn ich nicht genug schlafe, bin ich wie ein Zombie 🤬 wer von euch kennt’s? 🙈Und gleichzeitig weiß ich, das eine super wichtige Woche vor mir liegt in der ich fit sein muss und stress mich selbst (Reminder to myself — lies meinen vorherigen Post! 😂). After a long year and a half journey through cosmetology school I officially met my hours! Thank you to Eric, all of my instructors, and my friends/family for the constant reassurance and support, I couldn’t have done it without any of you! I think the most rewarding thing for me this entire journey was to see the growth I’ve made as a stylist and how applying yourself and repeating the same technique 100x does actually make a difference. My biggest struggle was doubting myself, and my work, as a perfectionist it was very stressful for something to not come out exactly as planned. But because of this, it has taught me the importance of continuing my education and having patience with myself. There are many more lessons to be learned and chapters to fill in my book! I go to therapy. 💰 AND I had billions of dollars, I pay for everyone to have a therapist to see once per week (or as often as they needed). It’s emotional for me that therapy has a stigma around it. 🚨It’s alarming how high the suicide and depression rates are - ESPECIALLY IN MEN - yet there’s so much shame around getting help. Just consider this lens... ➡️ You wouldn’t ask a random person to help you budget to buy a house - you would go to a professional. ➡️ You wouldn’t ask a random person to help you get physically fit - you would go to a professional. ➡️ You wouldn’t ask a random person to fix your broken arm - you would go to a professional. Mother’s Day is very difficult for me. Devastating, actually. I’m not sure I’ve ever opened up about it but I’ve been owning and sharing more of my story more each day. My trauma, my voice, my story. Period. I have very mixed emotions leading up to Mother Day. I’ve been a Motherless Mother by choice for 16 years, I have little to no support from my other parent, I’m the oldest of six kids myself, but I am the ONLY parent among us. I’ve dealt with nothing but criticisms and judgements and ‘we know better than you’ my entire motherhood journey. I’m the only one breaking cycles and healing and growing. With zero help or support. (This isn’t about being a martyr. It’s just the truth.) Yet, I am a bitch for speaking up, changing the ‘way it’s always been done’, and being firm in my boundaries. While it’s necessary to do this work - it isn’t satisfying or rewarding. We don’t get a pat on the back being the cycle breaker in our families. We get scrutinized. We get gossiped about. We get judged. We get hurt. A lot. I feel very lonely in this motherhood journey most of the time. To not only be raising six humans, but also being the generational cycle breaker, with no familial support - it’s way past overwhelming - it feels impossible. Yet, I (we) take it on every single day because it’s that important to me (us). I’m in a phase of my journey where I’m beyond exhausted by continuing to love and care for people whom do not love and care for me. What do we do? We grieve. We grieve the lost potential - oh the lost potential. 😔 We grieve being forced to set boundaries and the backlash from that. We grieve when we let go of relationships that we wish we didn’t have to. We grieve. Over and over again. Doing the right thing is rarely the fun or popular or rewarding thing. We do it anyways. I’m sharing this for myself and any of you in similar situations. We don’t owe them - the people who hurt or hinder us - anything anymore. In fact, them thinking we do; that is the problem. You aren’t the problem, they are. 3 years ago today, I made the decision to become an Entrepreneur. They say owning a business is hard, and you’ve succeeded if you’ve made it past 3 years. Without a doubt this is the most underestimated statement. Most of you only see my company’s marketing and the smile that crosses my face when you ask me “How’s Business?” What you don’t see are the blood, sweat, tears and sacrifices I’ve made. The late nights I’ve spent up handling bookkeeping, taxes, marketing, managing a team, handling a full clientele and maintaining a clean studio. Sometime I feel like its borderline impossible.. but if you asked me if id do it all again, my answer would be “Absolutely!” Being an Entrepreneur has brought so many amazing people in my life. Clients who have become lifetime friends. Women who have become mentors, who have pushed me out of my comfort zone to reach new levels of success I didn’t think where achievable. My colleagues and other Artists I’ve met from around the world that are now family. Looking back, these past 3years have been some of the best experiences of my life. I have traveled overseas, putting my education first. I have competed in Global Championships with some of the top artists’ from around the world. I have created a name for myself as one of the Leading Permanent Makeup Artist and Educator here in Western New York. But most importantly, I have created a company in which our sole mission is to Empower other women and to make them feel more confident in their own skin. Life is not perfect, we are not perfect but the continued progression and commitment to something means we get closer to a perceived “equilibrium”. This has nothing to do with running but everything to do with running. There are a lot of new people here and I guess I should give you a an understanding of who I am what you can find. I was born in Uganda raised in London and been lucky enough to now say I’m a @nikerunning coach. What does that mean, well I get to provide you with context of what I understand as a Physiotherapist and running Coach. Running has been a great tool in what I do in other parts of my life, I have shared this sport with the young gunners at @the_somerville and started @ldnslct. @ldnslct is an organisation which proactively encourages black and ethnic minority individuals to engage in running. Why? Because black and minority people need to be thought of, they have got to find a way to enjoy sports with cultural reference. Have you ever been in a warm up area for large events? The choice of music is not diverse and the environment can seem skewed to welcome a specific cohort of runners. Also have a think about this, Black people have the highest risk of heart disease and obesity and the lowest rate of physical activity. This is not a white vs black movement, it’s a pro black supportive movement. My oldest friend is not black and he’s family, I’m an uncle to his kids because that is how close we are.
