Tank AA, 20 mm Quad, Skink was a Canadian self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, developed in 1943–44, in response to a requirement from the First Canadian Army. Due to a lack of threat from the German Luftwaffe, the Skink was cancelled in 1944 after only 3 were built. From 6 February to 11 March 1945, the Skink visited all but one of the Canadian armoured regiments - from Nijmegen to the Cleve area - frequently engaging the German army. All units found it to be a valuable asset but no enemy aircraft presented itself to the Skinks guns and its main function was to flush out stubborn pockets of enemy infantry and force their surrender. The remaining Skink pilots and the completed turrets went into long-term storage in Canada where, at some point, they were scrapped. So here it is... The real goal of my HVSS project, the beautiful M4A1(76)W HVSS GMC. Better known as the M4A1E8 Sherman, or a large hatch M4A1 with HVSS. Regardless what you call it, its an exceptionally difficult vehicle to capture in LEGO. Ive done my best here, building upon some of the techniques I employed to build my first cast hull E8, back in 2016. Like any model, it could be improved or changed in any number of ways, but Im proud of the techniques employed to create the signature gentle curve of the cast hull, as well as the details involved in both the front and rear of the hull. Lloyd W. Williams was an officer during the First World War. Born in 1887 in Virginia he became a second lieutenant of the US Army in 1909 🇺🇲 . On 3rd June 1918 Williams and a division of Marines were assigned to help the French Army 🇨🇵 at Belleau Wood. When asked to retreat by a French Colonel he said Retreat, Hell! We just got here! . On 11th June 1918 Williams led an attack that routed the German defenders at Belleau Wood near Chateau-Thierry, France. According to a French Major, after he ordered Williams to withdraw, Williams replied with Go To Hell. Sometime later Williams was gassed and injured by shrapnel. He was lying wounded in battle. The medics came to him and Williams said Dont bother with me. Take care of my good men . Williams would die from an artillery shell while being evacuated. This week’s fourth Battle of Britain aircraft is the Boulton Paul Defiant, also known as the ‘turret fighter’. It is often described as the worst RAF fighter aircraft. But was it really? Let’s find out… While the Hurricane and especially the Spitfire are famous for fighting in the Battle of Britain, the Defiant is somewhat forgotten. Yet, it is one of the most interesting aircraft ever to serve with the RAF. What made the Defiant so special, was the concept of a turret-armed interceptor fighter. By the mid-1930s bomber aircraft had developed into fast aircraft, which were difficult to intercept by existing fighter aircraft. It was believed that air combat would happen at such great speed that a fighter with the guns firing straight ahead would have insufficient time to shoot down a bomber. The solution was to use a fully rotating gun turret which could fire at the bomber. The idea was that the turret fighter would fly next to the enemy bomber and riddle it with gun fire, much like a naval engagement during the Battle of Trafalgar. Unlike Nelson’s ships, the four-gun electro-hydraulic turret could fire 2,400 rounds per minute. It seemed like a valid concept and Boulton-Paul replied to the Air Ministry’s Specification F.9/35 of a two-seater day-and-night ‘turret fighter’ by offering the Defiant design. A prototype first flew on 11 August 1937. Flight trials revealed the aircraft possessed positive flight characteristics and was a stable gun platform. Its Rolls Royce Merlin engine gave it a top speed of 302 mph (486 km/h), around 20 mph (32 km/h) slower than the Hurricane. When Hitler invaded France, only two fighter squadrons were fully equipped with the Defiant. On 13 May, Defiants of No. 264 Squadron engaged a formation of German Stuka bombers and claimed four of them. In turn, they were attacked by the escorting German Messerschmitt fighters which shot down five out of six Defiants. In the next sorties, the scenario repeated itself: the Defiant was more than capable of bringing down a German bomber, but was vulnerable against agile fighter aircraft. “Lako prijevozni zdrug” - In the Italian 3rd Cavalry Division, 8th Italian Army, there was a peculiar division whose existence has been barely mentioned in the years after the war. This was the Croatian Light Transport Brigade, a brigade of volunteers from Independent State of Croatia which served in the Italian Army on the Eastern Front in late 1942. This formation came into existence after request by Italian authorities (given the fact that Croatia had already created a German-Croatian Wehrmacht Regiment). It firstly fought against Partisan formations in 1941, but was sent to Italy for further training. It participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, more precisely in the battles on the Don River. It was completely destroyed by the Red Army in December 1942. Much like their national counterparts in the German Army, they wore Italian uniforms with Croatian insignia and carried Croatian flags. - Interesting: This formation, of about 1,200 volunteers at its peak, sparked regional headlines in 2008 after the discovery of 16 killed legionnaires in Russia. Cats have long had a place in war as ships cats or dugout mousers or the mascots of fighting groups. Countless times, too, theyve been adopted by soldiers who find them left behind in war zones, their human families put to flight or worse. These cats were often held as mascots, and played an important part in keeping morale high. In World War I, the British army employed upwards of 500,000 cats as ratters but also as mobile gas detectors. Cats also have their own built-in bomb detectors. Whether they are simply attuned to changes in atmospheric pressure or they have a sixth sense, some cats are particularly good at knowing when a bomb is about to hit. During World War II, families soon learned to follow their cats into bomb or air-raid shelters, saving many lives. Among the most famous cats was one appropriately named Bomber. This cat could distinguish between the sounds made by RAF and German aircraft from a surprising distance. When Bomber headed for shelter, his family followed, making him a feline early warning system. . Ghost Division An actual propaganda poster, displayed on Signal Magazine on 1940, shows the Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. C, turret number 432, commanded by Oberleutnant Karl Hanke, assigned to Panzer Regiment 25 / 7th, Panzer Division, during the Battle of France. . Under command of Erwin Rommel, and part of the 15th Panzer Corps, the 7th Panzer Division became a myth, earning the Ghost Division name in the Campaign of France due to its rapid movements and the difficulty to contact them since no-one, even the high command, knew where they were. . Rommel, who fiercely understood Blitzkrieg concepts, would command often from near the front lines, thus saving time and giving orders from what he saw. . This proved highly efficient, and, in some ocassions, German commanders would disobey or ignore High Command orders, giving themselves new ones guiding by their instincts, and, as long as this disobedience ended with a favourable result, nothing would really happen. . This comes back from the WW1, where Stoßtruppens had to make their moves guiding by what they saw in the front lines, having no time to send and recieve orders from the HQ. . Combat and situations can suddenly change, so having the capability to act from what you see, gives you a lot of versatility. . German 6th Army Infantrymen pause in the ruins during fierce fightings with the Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad, Russia, October 1942. The German offensive to capture Stalingrad began in August 1942, using the 6th Army and elements of the 4th Panzer Army. The attack was supported by intense Luftwaffe bombing that reduced much of the city to rubble. The battle degenerated into house-to-house fighting, as both sides poured reinforcements into the city. By mid-November, the Germans had pushed the Soviet defenders back at great cost into narrow zones along the west bank of the Volga River. On 19 November, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a two-pronged attack targeting the weaker Romanian and Hungarian armies protecting the 6th Armys flanks. The Axis flanks were overrun and the 6th Army was cut off and surrounded in the Stalingrad area. Adolf Hitler was determined to hold the city at all costs and forbade the 6th Army from attempting a breakout; instead, attempts were made to supply it by air and to break the encirclement from the outside. Heavy fighting continued for another two months. At the beginning of February 1943, the Axis forces in Stalingrad, having exhausted their ammunition and food, surrendered after five months, one week and three days of fighting.
