Be Like Others (2008), dir. Tanaz Eshaghian A vital documentary about transsexuality in modern Tehran, exploring issues of gender and sexual identity while following the personal stories of some patients at a gender reassignment clinic. Although homosexual relationships are illegal (punishable by death) in Iran, sex reassignment operations are permitted. In 1987, Islamic leader Ayatollah Khomeini passed a fatwa allowing sex-change operations as a cure for diagnosed transsexuals. In Iran, homosexuality is socialised to be considered a shameful choice and transsexuality is (very wrongly!) thought of as a curable mental illness. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has notoriously proclaimed that there are no homosexuals in Iran—homosexuality has (again, wrongly!) become interchangeable with transsexuality due to fear, censorship and repression. One of the patients at Dr. Bahram Mir-Jalalis Mirdamad Surgical Centre is Ali Askar, a 24-year-old who faces harassment due to their feminine appearance and behaviour. They do not want to become a woman but see no other options in Iranian society. They assert that they are not homosexual and are socialised by society to view homosexuality as something that is immoral. By the end of the film, Ali has become a woman named Negar. She has been disowned by her family, experienced depression and has had to work as a prostitute. Twenty-year-old Anoosh has been ostracised due to their femininity. Their boyfriend feels more comfortable when Anoosh dresses as a woman, and in contrast to Ali, Anooshs mother is supportive of their desire to change sex. The end of the film shows Anoosh-now Anahita–happy and engaged to her boyfriend. However, her boyfriend has become increasingly distant since Anahita had her surgery. The film played at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival, winning three awards. It is not currently available to watch online. Dear Mom, it’s been nine years since you left. When I was little, you would bathe me, dress me in blue Shalwar Kameez, and add Kajal in my eyes as we sat in the winter sun on our roof where I always fell asleep in your lap. How before every bite of roti you fed me, I would beg for a cycle? You named me Kamran after the PTV song, “Har Ghari Tayyar Kamran” and always called me “Mere Khwaboon Ki Tabeer” (the realization of my dreams). If I got 9/10 marks in exams, you would ask why I didn’t get 10/10, and if I got 10, you asked if I was the only one. When once I failed in an exam, you made me wear a necklace of shoes. But, when I first flew to Pakistan from Germany, with tear-filled eyes, you kissed me on the forehead and placed a garland of roses and marigolds around my neck. You sold gold bangles for my university fee but wouldn’t allow me to cycle from Germany to Pakistan and say, “sons living abroad rush back home, but you have chosen the slowest way to return.” I emotionally blackmailed you for years. While I was still cycling to Pakistan, you went to a hospital instead. I found you on a bed amongst beeping machines. You opened your eyes and mumbled something. We both couldn’t dam rivers flowing from our eyes. We spent several weeks at the hospital. I showed you my bicycle. You said once you get back healthy, you would sit behind me on it. But then you disappeared. When I lifted that brown blanket, I only found your body. Quiet. Still. Emotionless. “The heaven is under your mother’s feet!” I buried you and the heaven in the ground and flattened the dirt with my own feet. Now I wander the world, but you have gone far away. Sometimes, you visit my snowy tent in Alaska and lull me to sleep, nurse my wound in dreams, or when I am hungry and thirsty in the Peruvian Highlands, you feed me daal and roti with your hands. I’ll keep seeking you until we meet again. Then we will sit and talk till the end of time and beyond until I again fall asleep in your lap, forgetting the pain of your absence. This time last year, I traveled to Yogyakarta, a city 8 hour east of Jakarta to volunteer for a legal education program that works to protect and educate the trans community via LBH Yogyakarta. Here, I met Ibu Shinta, the founder of Pondok Pesantren Waria Al-Fatah (Muslim Boarding School) Ibu Shinta and the women of this facility are facing extreme danger. Due to the pandemic, the city has extended its lockdown until the end of September. Women who usually earn their income through busking in the street are struggling to have their ends met. As we enter the 75th Indonesian Independence day, I want to bring your attention towards raising funds to provide a financial cushion for these women. Minister of Public Health and WHO Director-General discuss boosting cooperation H.E. Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, met today with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), via video conferencing to discuss strengthening collaboration between Qatar and WHO, developments on the COVID-19 pandemic. They also discussed ways to bolster cooperation during the 2022 FIFA World Cup through the draft trilateral agreement on health and sports cooperation between the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the WHO and FIFA, which is set to be the first of its kind, as it will strengthen the role of the World Health Organization and the health sector during the2022 FIFA World Cup. During the meeting, Her Excellency praised the important role played by WHO, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and stressed Qatars keenness to support WHOs programs. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) thanked His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar for the country’s support to the WHO, other organizations and countries during the COVID -19 pandemic, expressing his wish that other countries will follow suit. Dr. Ghebreyesus also commended the progress of the health system in Qatar as well as the distinguished Qatari experience in combating the COVID-19 pandemic that achieved such a low mortality rate, considering that the Qatari experience constitutes a distinct model for global emulation. Dr. Ghebreyesus explained that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be one of the most anticipated tournaments, after the world has gone through COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that the role of the World Health Organization will be stronger and more important during the tournament through the draft cooperation agreement between WHO and the International Federation of Football (FIFA) signed last year to strengthen the role of the organization during the tournament. Le confinement et la distance ont parfois rendu leur travail de création difficile et a entraîné le report de l’exposition de plusieurs mois. She became fascinated with studying architecture, as she observed there were no parks or cultural spaces where she lived. When the Syrian Civil War broke out, she made the decision to stay in the city she grew up in with her two children. 60 % of the neighborhood was left in rubble, so she designed proposals for rebuilding the district of Homs that was destroyed in the war and continues to speak out about the housing crisis in Syria. Relatives mourn two children killed after dominant-caste men set fire to the home of a Dalit family in the village of Sunped in 2015. Every year, tens of thousands of crimes against Dalits and Adivasis are registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The recent rape and murder of a Dalit woman in #Hathras is one among thousands of such brutal caste crimes. In 2018, there were roughly fifty thousand crimes against Dalits and Adivasis registered under the Atrocities Act. This included nearly a thousand murders and almost four thousand rapes. The latest rates of atrocities motivated by religion are unknown—the Modi government stopped releasing numbers on lynchings and religiously motivated killings in 2017. Noor Nisa, about 18, was pregnant; her water had just broken. Her husband, whose first wife had died during childbirth, was determined to get Noor Nisa to the hospital in Faizabad, a four-hour drive from their village in Badakhshan Province. His borrowed car broke down, so he went to find another vehicle. I ended up taking Noor Nisa, her husband, and her mother to the hospital, where she delivered a baby girl. My interpreter, who is a doctor, and I were on a mission to photograph maternal health and mortality issues, only to find the entire story waiting for us along a dusty Afghan road. When I made this photograph in 2009, Afghanistan had one of the highest rates of maternal death in the world, due in part to a lack of access to medical facilities and trained medical professionals. An extremely descriptive photograph taken circa 1930 in Ramallah, in where it appears to be a working hive producing textiles and embroidered dresses. At least two embroidery methods are clearly shown in this picture; one is cross stitching directly on fabric (most probably linen), the second is cross stitching using a guide fabric that’s basically an open weave cotton fabric (Or what we call now waste canvas), fixed on the original fabric and then removed by plucking the threads when done with embroidery. . In Tajikistan, I almost tied knots with the lady in the background. While cycling the Pamir Highway, I made a short stop in a lush valley to pick black mulberries from the trees. Nearby, a family was sitting on the ground having a meal. As I was tasting fresh mulberries, two women from the family approached me. After greetings, the older one asked me how old I was and if I was married. I answered her in broken Tajik. She pointed to her niece and asked if I would like to marry her. I looked at her niece. She nodded to me. They both looked serious. I am a very shy person but immediately said, yes! After a little pause, I continued, but you see I am a Musafir (traveller) without a home. What will happen to you when I am on the road? She said, I will come with you on a bicycle. I also have a horse. I can join you wherever you go. I looked around. There were fruit trees everywhere. Behind them was an agricultural land and behind them, tall mountains. It wasnt a bad place to get stuck for life. My kids would run around in this open space while I would work in the fields with my Tajik wife. But, how would I tell this to my family in Pakistan to whom I have always maintained I would never get married, and which people I should invite to my wedding? While I pondered those questions, the young lady asked, do you pray five times a day because I do, even Tahajjud? Her question jolted me awake from a beautiful dream. I couldnt lie. She said she would only marry a devout Muslim who did not miss his prayers. But I like your beard. You should grow it longer. When I told her I am from Pakistan she raised her right hand towards her face and said, Salam Pakistan! I sat with the family for a while. They served me tea and bread. The could-have-been-my-wife plucked black mulberries for me and gave me a handful of apricots to eat for the rest of the day. I left with a bit of heavy heart and during the whole way I was thinking if I had missed a golden opportunity of marrying a Tajik girl. One thing was certain though, I needed to offer all my prayers and grow a longer beard if I were to marry in Tajikistan! - @kamranonbike on Instagram

When someone undergoes treatments and procedures for such deadly disease, whole family goes through a changed lifestyle, a different routine, behavioral changes. We start realizing and understanding a lot of things. We start seeing things from a different perspective for everyone around us and for our own selves. One thing that i have understood in these times is the importance of “will power”. Of both, the patient and people around them. To have faith, to have hope. To wake up everyday believing that things WILL be alright. To going to bed every night with faith in miracles and prayers. It’s not permanent, of course. There will be days when you’d feel completely drained because of the medications, frequent visits to the hospital, feeling helpless most of the time, being unable to do the most basic tasks. There will be days when all the struggle would leave you tired and frustrated, you’ll want to smack everything and everyone and get done with it as soon as you can. Maybe a few minutes of absolute hopelessness. No hope at all. But at the end of the day, when your body needs pills and capsules, your soul needs this spiritual drink called as your will power. It goes side by side and it comes from within. Resist giving up, resist being pessimistic. Have faith. Be hopeful. Be optimistic. A brief history of Womens Rights in Pakistan (Part 2): Shortly after Zia ul Haq established his dictatorship in Pakistan, he introduced the infamous Hudood Ordinances in 1979. The Hudood Ordinances comprised of laws that significantly reduced the rights of the women in the country. Before I expand on what all the Hudood Ordinances entailed, I think its first important to understand the indirect impact that Zias tenure had on the women of the time. Shireen Khan Burki, in Politics of Misogyny makes note of how the Federal State began to demand the covering of women with chadors- working women were told to adhere to these laws and women were also forced to ensure that they covered themselves before appearing on state-controlled television. Although the rural life was relatively unwavered by Zias laws, the urban womans life was drastically affected. Not only was there a staunch increase in restrictions, but harassment against women was also on the rise (Burki, 2016, p. 105). There were debates relating to whether the Muslim Family Law Ordinance of 1961 (discussed in the previous post) should be repealed, whether women should be allowed to drive cars, and also whether women should be barred from participating in spectator sports. Even though all of these issues contributed to the agitation of women, the Hudood Ordinances of 1979 proved to be the pivotal moment when the leading female activists and lawyers decided to mobilise in protest of Zia-ul-Haq’s regime. [The next post (part 3) will refer to the Hudood Ordinances and its effects]. *** I understand that my choice of words may seem to be harsher than necessary- but it is about time that we understand where the problem lies. Islam, without a doubt, has beautiful teachings which- in theory- would format a perfect society. However, that does not mean that imperfect humans can not exploit and distort it to further their own agendas. Religion is a tool that has been the easiest to play with for many politicians, and they have used it to their advantage for centuries.
