Im Gegensatz zu den Kupferrohren die ich ansonsten sehr oft verwende, muss man hierbei sehr genau planen. Aufgrund des Gewindes der Rohre ist man nicht ganz so flexibel. Es sei denn, man sägt die Rohre durch und schweißt sie wider aneinander. Im DIY-Bereich haben aber wohl die wenigsten die Möglichkeit zu schweißen. Deshalb ist hier gute Planung die halbe Miete. . Etwas tricky ist es dann noch die Teile miteinander zu verbinden, da ja an allen Enden Gewinde sind. Aber mit etwas Übung und einer Wasserpumpenzange geht das schon. Was sagst du zu der Unterkonstruktion? Schick oder schäbig? 🙈 . 🇬🇧... . Must first examine my work. I built this scaffolding from the materials. In contrast to the copper tubes which I use very often, you have to plan very exactly. Because of the thread of the tubes you are not so flexible. Unless you cut the tubes and weld them together. In the DIY sector, however, only very few people have the possibility to weld. Thats why good planning is half the battle here. . It is a bit tricky to connect the parts together, because there are threads at all ends. But with a little practice and a water pump pliers this is possible. What do you think about the substructure? Experimented with a new (for me) technique of wood framework and joints. I made a bunch of various drill jigs that give me perfect hole-location and perpendicularity. Also used a pipe-clamp around my drill in order to get equal depths. Turned out pretty well...🤙🏻 . Senior Project Manager Derrick Seitz teamed up with his wife and brother-in-law this past month to 3D print face mask strap extenders and face shields for those in the medical community. The extenders allow for more comfortable wear of disposable masks during the much longer COVID-19 shifts by removing pressure and irritation to the ears. Throwback to Berts article in Ironworks Magazine about Helical vs. Straight Cut Gears- In my youth I was fascinated with my Erector Set. The nuts, bolts, beams, plates, wheels, pulleys, axles and motors included in the Erector Set kit allowed me to construct anything my imagination could cipher. Legos never really did it for me because the snap-together plastic components were for sissies. Erector Sets had the fundamental building blocks for any industrial society because the components were steel and bolted together with nuts and bolts. The stuff I was constructing needed to be tough enough for an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser to run over it. In recent years I figured out my childhood obsession with Erector Sets. That is, the Erector Set gave me all the necessary components to construct mechanical assemblies from the ground-up. This is very much like what I do for a living today. I have a “kit” of hardware and design guidelines that I use to design new transmissions and drivetrains. Some of it is easy and some of it is more involved. For example, choosing bearings for a new product is easy because the choices are specified in the bearing catalog with performance perimeters and fitment tolerances all spelled out. Gears and shafts are not standard catalog items and must be designed for the specific application by assessing three criteria: Noise/whine, strength, and efficiency. Based on the qualitative importance of the three criteria, a decision is made to utilize a straight cut (also called spur gear) or helical gear. Our final day of @scixchangeru Hide Camp 2020. I will have more words later as I let the gravity of this week settle and have time to process everything. Im so proud of all of us for doing the work to reclaim this for ourselves and our communities. It hasnt been easy for any of us, the fact that we are all a group of fresh hide tanners really showcases that. We dont have easy access to elders who are passing down this knowledge. Traditions like hide tanning have been separated from many of us for a long time, so we are doing the best we can to learn and teach ourselves how to tan hides! Normally we have to do it on our own, but gatherings like this help us to create a stronger hide tanning community for one another and for the future. If you truly want to learn this, only you can make it happen. Find someone who you can offer help to, accept the fact that you will have less than perfect experiences, and dont stop trying! Hide tanning has always been a part of me, I was meant to do this. Thanks for following along with us, for all your messages of support and interest! Physicists Quiet the Quantum Whisper to Improve Gravitational Wave Detector Sensitivity Gravitational wave detectors have opened a new window to the universe by measuring the ripples in spacetime produced by colliding black holes and neutron stars, but they are ultimately limited by quantum fluctuations induced by light reflecting off of mirrors. LSU Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe, postdoctorsl fellow, NIST, and his team of LSU researchers have conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to cancel this quantum backaction and improve detector sensitivity. In a new paper in Physical Review X, the investigators present a method for removing quantum backaction in a simplified system using a mirror the size of a human hair and show the motion of the mirror is reduced in agreement with theoretical predictions. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation. Louisiana State University Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe has conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to improve gravitational wave detectors’ sensitivity. Credit: LSU Despite using 40-kilogram mirrors for detecting passing gravitational waves, quantum fluctuations of light disturb the position of the mirrors when the light is reflected. As gravitational wave detectors continue to grow more sensitive with incremental upgrades, this quantum backaction will become a fundamental limit to the detectors’ sensitivity, hampering their ability to extract astrophysical information from gravitational waves. “We present an experimental testbed for studying and eliminating quantum backaction,” Cripe said. “We perform two measurements of the position of a macroscopic object whose motion is dominated by quantum backaction and show that by making a simple change in the measurement scheme, we can remove the quantum effects from the displacement measurement. How would you have done it? • • If youve seen @nsbuilders most recent post, youd know that @patrick__mcpherson and I have been working on the stairs for this monostringer. • • @theothernick.nsb goal was to have the tread sit in such a way that the stringer would basically split the miter. The only problem with that was that the treads were already preassembled (with the exception of the bottom). We made a jig that would allow us to route the miter and the rounded corners all in one shot. I think they came out 👌 but would love to know if anyone had a different way to do it! • Edit: Just to get ahead of this question, yes that gap against the steel is intentional. Deshalb gings heute gleich mit dem Längenzuschnitt an der Kappsäge los👍🏻 ⠀ Leider stehe ich aktuell alleine in der Werkstatt, da die Manuela krank ist. Dadurch bin ich natürlich nur halb so schnell wie normal😔. Aber vlt schaffe ich es noch bis zum Sonntag, das wäre nämlich mein Ziel💪🏻. ⠀ Das letzte Bild zeigt die für uns schönste Stelle in dem Furnierpaket. Ein richtig dicker Ast mit Riss, mit dem schwarzen Kit sieht es dann richtig nice aus😍. Das einzige was richtig schwierig fur mich ist, ist das bündig hobeln der Überstände. Die Eiche ist richtig faserig und reißt extrem schnell ein😵. Und die Äste haben es auch teilweise in sich.
