“Black girls should not only be visible when we are mourning them. They should be visible when they’re living and joyous” • • Yesterday marked the 57th anniversary of the bombing of 16th St Baptist Church (planted by members of the KKK) that resulted in the death of 4 Black girls- Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson & Cynthia Wesley. • • According to SLPC, Addie Mae Collins was an outgoing, artistic girl who sold aprons and potholders that her mother stitched together to make ends meet. Denise McNair performed in plays, dance routines and poetry readings to raise money for muscular dystrophy research. Carole Robertson was a good student who loved reading and dancing. She sang in the chorus and played the clarinet. Cynthia Wesley excelled in math, reading and band. • • These girls LIVED, and as Black girls do so often, thrived in circumstances that actively work to marginalize them. Their lives are not only about their death. What if our world celebrated them when they were living and joyous, and not just in their death? What if our world offered Black girls a way to thrive, and not merely survive? • • On the 57th Anniversary of their death, Black womxn rallied together to show up for Black girls. I am overwhelmed with emotion about the Black Girl Billion Fund. The timeliness and intention is too powerful to articulate. All we can say is thank you. • CALL TO ACTION: Share + Amplify + Support this Fund. Let’s work to create the world Black girls have ALWAYS deserved for little girls in honor our these precious 4 little girls. @blackgirlfreedomfund • #blackgirlfreedomfund #justiceforblackgirls #blackgirlsdeserve #protectblackgirls #1billionforblackgirls - @justice4blackgirls on Instagram

- A General Guide to The Rhythm (My worlds form of magic)
“The end of Biafra is a significant event that I want to cover. I take the first plane to Lagos. And as I do not have a visa, I slip into the delegation of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity) led by its Secretary General Diallo Telli and pass through immigration formalities without a hitch. In Lagos, the authorities chartered a plane to take a hundred journalists to the former Biafra. But all the seats on the plane are already taken – the world press is here – and they are expensive. I am penniless and the advance on fees from Jeune Afrique has been exhausted. Regardless, I still go to the airport with the other journalists and head towards the bridge of the plane, as if my name is on the list that an attendant is ticking. When it is my turn, he pretends to look at his list, then beckons to me to enter. Up till today, I still wonder why he did that? I learn that luck is earned” - abbas. The media presence in Biafra between 1970 and 1971 was a very important story for the beginning of photography used by aid agencies. It was the the first time that there was media interest in a story like Biafra, which led to non government organisations like Oxfam and was hugely successful in fundraising, using the pictures coming from agencies. These photos by Abbas have been shared by French newspaper @lemondefr. Martin Luther King Jr. had stayed up until four in the morning the night before the March on Washington, 57 years ago today. And when he finished, he still wasn’t completely satisfied with the end product. He simply ran out of time. What could one really accomplish in five minutes, the time limit for all the speakers that day? King was making his way through his speech when he heard the voice of Mahalia Jackson, the “Queen of Gospel” who had traveled around with King to sing songs in places he gave talks. Jackson had sung two spirituals that day and was no more than 10 feet away from King (circled in red) when, in the middle of the speech she yelled, “Tell them about the dream Martin!” King lit up. He knew what she meant. She was with him in various cities when he uttered the words “I Have A Dream,” with a specific phrase or two about that city. King looked up from his paper and diverted his path. “I say to you today my friends, so although we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I have a Dream.” And the rest is history. King’s tangent became the title of his speech, which was named the best speech of the 20th Century by American Rhetoric. Wherever #ADI has conducted undercover investigations, we have documented acts of #abuse. At Circo Las Galaxias in Peru (pictured), #lions were pricked, whipped, and pulled by their tails to force them into performing. Such acts are not unique – decades of ADI evidence has shown that #wildanimals in circuses perform through fear, not kindness, and are routinely subjected to brutal training methods and violence. Tools of the trade include whips, goads, shovels, pitchforks, iron bars, bullhooks, electric shock devices and more; most anything can be weaponized. Sadly, the circus industry seeks to prolong their suffering by claiming that animals are not mistreated, and by fighting #circusanimal bans. But we are winning. 47 countries – including Peru – and over 102 US municipalities have passed bans on the use of animals in circuses, and just this week, France, Lithuania and Poland moved to do the same. That number will only continue to rise. The truth is on our side. Super proud of my eldest daughter Fadeke who is the current President of her school with her all female led student Government(Girl Power). This post is not about the actual achievement but more about the skills, hard work and characteristics that shaped the woman shes becoming. Looking at my daughter i see an independent, resilient,Strong, kind, intelligent and prayerful young lady. So how did we get here? Im honest with Fadeke, even when its hard, having an open, honest age appropriate dialogue from an early age made her well equipped to face several challenges. As parents we have no control over the world or what its going to hand our children. But we need to teach them skills that when the world pushes their limits they can get up and push back because strong children grows up to be strong adults. Here are few tips we used with Fadeke and her siblings. You guys are always asking me for tips hope this helps: 1. Understanding her values as a person doesnt resides in how she looks instead we encouraged her leadership skills determination, kindness and sense of humour. 2. We helped her discover her passion by focusing on her natural interests and skills 3.We praise the skills and characteristics that lead to any achievement but never the actual win 4.We watch tv and read together and deconstruct the messages by having an open dialogue and asking each other questions 5.She comes to us for advice, and to develop her decision making strategies but her choices are her own, as are the consequences (this started at 13) 6. Her relationship with her dad @mrgoldmineglobal who is hands on and loving helped her grow up to be confident with a positive self esteem 7. Letting her know that a sense of humour is very important because when you can laugh at yourself, youre much less worried about others laughing at you. 8.Teaching her to pray and understand that God is accessible and always available to assist 9.We celebrate other peoples successes and accomplishments Parenting is very difficult but with love, intentional parenting, patient and prayers it is possible to raise decent adults - @bbalogun on Instagram

Thanks for all the amazing feedback about my @nytimestravel Malawi photo essay. Lots of questions about how I behave around kids when I’m working - I suppose these will give you a bit of an idea of that. (Thankfully I have reason to stick to Malawi, which means you don’t need to watch my street dance-off with a group of kids aged 3-8 in Karamoja from a few years ago.) 🤣 Also, a lot of questions about things like consent. This is a tricky subject, not least because our understanding of what that means doesn’t necessarily translate that well. The sheer number of people we come across (especially kids, whom I often photograph for their pleasure more than my own), sometimes not knowing until years later if a photograph will be used for anything, makes having any kind of written consent from everyone who appears in any single picture impossible in practical terms, as does things like writing down names (although I do this whenever it is feasible, and certainly if I engage in a one-on-one conversation and then take portrait photographs of that person). Having said that, I - and most other photographers I know - don’t tend to photograph people (and kids in particular) without first having asked for permission, and I generally don’t enter a school or a village without a chaperone of sorts - a teacher, chief, parent, or project employee. I always want my visits to be appreciated, so the thought of causing discomfort or making anyone upset by my actions would certainly be more important than taking a particular photo, no matter how good I think it might be. We have to be human first, photographers second, and as always: be respectful. And if everyone assumes that the intentions of others are good - and let’s face it, they usually are - then most situations end up being very pleasant. (Also, vast majority of people I’ve come across on my travels absolutely love being photographed, so it really is a win-win if done in the right way.) Greetings from my campfire by the river in northern Sweden, where I’m just about to start cooking dinner. More from here soon! ♥️ - @marcuswestbergphotography on Instagram

The University of Abuja on Friday announced the indefinite suspension of 24 students of the institution arrested during cult initiation in Gwako village along Gwagwalada Road in the Federal Capital Territory. The students, including seven final year students, were arrested by the police on March 15 after the villagers raised the alarm of a crowd of cultists hiding in a bush. The suspected cultists arrested with the effort of the community vigilantes had subsequently been taken into police custody. According to an eyewitness, a total of 46 persons suspected to be students were arrested but about 24 are from the University of Abuja. It was not clear yet where the other suspects school. They were stripped and beaten by the villagers before they were moved away by the police in two vans. The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, on Friday approved the indefinite suspension of the 24 students of the university. In a release by UNIABUJA’s Head of Information and University Relations, Dr Habib Yakoob, the university said suspicious activities must be promptly reported to the police and other authorities. Yakoob said, “The vice-chancellor has approved the indefinite suspension of 24 students of the university for alleged involvement in cultism. This is the first batch of the arrested students to be suspended by the university management. “Out of the 24 suspended students, who cut across various faculties including Science, Arts and Social Science, seven were in 400 level; 10 in 300 level; six in 200 level and one spill-over student. “The affected students have been directed by the university authorities to hand over all the (school’s) property in their possession and vacate the hostels immediately. The vice-chancellor also directed that the students be made to appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.” The university management maintained that it has zero tolerance for cultism and other related misconduct - @uniabujafinest on Instagram

My family moved from Kenya, Africa to America 21 years ago to seek opportunity in the land of the free. I have since assimilated and found myself in a path of music and art which would have been unimaginable in Kenya. I am very grateful for the opportunities that America provides, but I have also learned its freedom doesn’t extend to most people that reside here. Opportunity is not handed out to people of color; we fight extremely hard for it. It was not easy to adjust growing up in America as an immigrant. I was constantly reminded that I was an outsider because I looked and spoke differently. I did my best to adapt despite having come from a country where I was seen as equal. The music and art scene was welcoming with open arms and I have met likeminded people in it. Despite acceptance, even within the music industry I found myself to be “the Brown guy” countless times, which gives no distinction between my individuality and my skin color. Beyond my experience and those of other immigrant folks, the plight of Black and Indigenous people of America is one that I deeply empathize with. This rat race has been created to oppress and destroy their communities. As an American, I now understand that the true meaning of being American is to fight for the freedom of ALL. The fight against this true meaning of America is a fight for racism, and is being lead by those in fear that their privilege will somehow be relinquished. My story is one of millions in the likes of IMMIGRANTS, BLACK, BROWN, INDIGENOUS, WOMEN and LGBTQ folx who struggle for equality in a system of oppression. Amongst the Zimbabwe football fraternity, “Go Bhora!” (meaning go football in English) is a Shona term to celebrate the scoring of a goal. In recent times, the term has become synonymous with goal celebrations in blind football, and even more so since the Zimbabwe National Paralympic Committee (ZNPC) successfully implemented the sport across the country’s ten provinces!
