Cheesin’ hard because it’s official... It’s been 365 days since the last time I took Ritalin 🥳 the past year has been WILD and I’m going to get into it more, but for now here’s 3 mistakes I made when I got off. 1️⃣ Not relying on nutritional strategies before getting off. Anyone who’s ever used a stimulant medication knows that when you’re on it, the cravings for sugar and refined carbs are unbearable, especially when you crash at the end of the day. My nutrition was off during this time, and had I started to work on my nutrition while still being on my medication, it would have been easier to build healthy habits and the withdrawal syndrome would have been more manageable. 2️⃣ Relying on information through instagram, podcasts and youtube. While it was motivating to know that I wasn’t alone in my journey, I followed some pretty insane advice. I went through some “therapeutic” fad diets for a few months that shocked my already depleted adrenal glands and thyroid, spent waaay too much money on herbal supplements that made me feel WORSE, and felt like I was even more lost. Just because something works for someone else with the same health concerns, doesn’t mean it will work for you. I cannot stress the importance of getting off of the hashtags and working with a professional. 3️⃣ I didn’t build a support system! I tried and backslid so many times with my medication and it made me feel like a failure, even though this process is NORMAL to go through. I told my husband so many times that I wanted to get off of it and didn’t succeed, so I surprised us both when I made it through the first month and casually mentioned it. Even talking to one of my sisters last month, she had no idea that I was off of my medication! The people in your life want to see you succeed and thrive and will always support you, and I will always support you too! Having support and people to talk to make the healing process so much easier, and helps you stay committed. There is no such thing as failure - backsliding is part of the learning process and helps you to grow. Just a reminder (to myself) and to anyone who needs to hear it: being overwhelmed does not make you broken, incapable or bad at managing life... it might be a signal that your mind and body are actually working, letting you know something ... that may be you need a release, a time out, some help, support, resources, to say no, to say yes, to eat, to sleep, to move... for me it was a few of these things, I could have listened a lot sooner but, I kept going and my release looked like this- crying in the parking lot of Whole Foods yesterday afternoon. The cry sucked but also felt so good... yes yes I’m told often, but you’re an Optimism Doctor... this is what you literally do, so how can you be overwhelmed, anxious, upset, sad, overwhelmed or even pessimistic... I always respond I am human. And all of these emotions are actually part of building resiliency and optimism — so i decided even though I know the tools that work for me I was going to allow myself to just be, to sit in it, to lean into it all and appreciate the shitty feelings and start all my tools tomorrow. Tomorrow is fine. and just by doing that I realized how I had tricked myself into one of my tools- self compassion! And I got home, laid on the playroom mat and made play dough tortillas and sweet potatoes with Jag and I was breathing better, smiling more and noticing things that I was happy about. And then, just because friends always know when you need it the most, my besties girlfriends who I haven’t seen in months and months surprised me with a super socially distant impromptu baby sprinkle! Something so small meant the entire world to me. Made me remember that we are social creatures we are and asking for help, and just being around loved ones is maybe the most potent form of medicine there truly is. Even though I lived in Trivandrum for most of my life, wed always head to my grandparents place in Mangalore for Onam vacation and so for the longest time, I hadnt experienced the spirit of Onam. Let’s talk about drunk eating (drunchies, munchies, etc)! Raise your hand if you’ve ever drunkenly eaten a bunch of food that you didn’t intend to eat and felt bad about it afterwards 🙋♀️ Here are my tips to overcome this: 1) Go into the night assuming that you can eat whatever / however much you want to when you get home - that way, you don’t feel pressured to make the “right” decision and do what actually feels good in the moment (whether it’s eating or not) 2) Know that drunk eating (if you drink) is a normal and unavoidable part of life - it happens and it’s ok! 3) The next morning, let your body decide what / when / how much to eat. There is no need to try and “compensate” because your body is smart! 4) Eating beforeee you drink can lower your chances of feeling ravenous / out of control when you get home (it’s also just better for you & more fun) 5) Keep water & nutritious snacks available so that you’re less likely to feel physically uncomfortable the next morning Comment your questions!👇🏼 Hope you all have a beautiful Friday, and Shana Tovah to those celebrating 💕💕💕 - @alexanoban on Instagram
