It was 1993 when my toddler daughter and I were going to meet my parents after Eid. Near Bagh, we had a severe accident when our van fell from the mountain into the deep valley. Many lives were lost but fortunately my daughter and I survived the crash. At first I was taken to PIMS Islamabad and after getting stabilized, it was suggested that I move to Abbottabad as the hospital there had special treatment facilities for patients like me. That day, I lost my legs. Wheelchair became a part of me. Since then my husband has been my support from the day we got married. He never thought of remarrying after my accident but gave me his shoulder to rely upon. I believe whatever I am today is because of him. It is him who helps me get out of the chair to the car and from the car to the wheelchair. I cannot shift to bed or go to the bathroom by myself, and for last 22 years he did this for me every single day. He has never made me feel disabled. I love him for being the best husband in the whole world! I just pray that everyone find a soulmate who loves them for who they are, and keeps by them through happiness and pain. Becoming disabled, I realized how difficult the life is for other disables out there. Back then there was not much support available for disables, government never actually considered doing something. It was then that I started advocacy for people like me and initially when I use to visit the local minister, they would think of me as someone who came to ask for financial support. With the passage of time, I earned their respect, because I never asked for anything for myself but for other disables only. Now, whenever I go to meet them, they stand up from their chairs in my respect. I am a teacher and I learnt all this through exposure. I worked hard; education and ethics paved my way and taught me to speak up for my rights. When his loan was approved early, Shastri told the bank, The common man should have the same privilege. He died at Tashkent in 1966 before he could repay the loan. The Bank wrote to his widow Lalita Shastri for repayment of the loan of Rs 5,000 which her husband owed. The lady promised to pay back in instalments from her family pension. She repaid every Rupee of the Rs 5,000.The fiat car still stands at his home, reminding of the era of a different breed of men. Incidently, when his son was given an out of turn promotion by a department, Shastri immediately had it reversed. When Shastri filled the form for admission of his son to St Stephens college, in the column about himself he wrote, Government Servant. During his Prime Ministership, his son once stood in line with other unemployed to register for a job at the Employment Exchange. The clerk enquired as to what was his father. The son replied, Prime Minister of India. Lal Bahadur was a strong man. A brief history of Womens Rights in Pakistan (Part 2): Shortly after Zia ul Haq established his dictatorship in Pakistan, he introduced the infamous Hudood Ordinances in 1979. The Hudood Ordinances comprised of laws that significantly reduced the rights of the women in the country. Before I expand on what all the Hudood Ordinances entailed, I think its first important to understand the indirect impact that Zias tenure had on the women of the time. Shireen Khan Burki, in Politics of Misogyny makes note of how the Federal State began to demand the covering of women with chadors- working women were told to adhere to these laws and women were also forced to ensure that they covered themselves before appearing on state-controlled television. Although the rural life was relatively unwavered by Zias laws, the urban womans life was drastically affected. Not only was there a staunch increase in restrictions, but harassment against women was also on the rise (Burki, 2016, p. 105). There were debates relating to whether the Muslim Family Law Ordinance of 1961 (discussed in the previous post) should be repealed, whether women should be allowed to drive cars, and also whether women should be barred from participating in spectator sports. Even though all of these issues contributed to the agitation of women, the Hudood Ordinances of 1979 proved to be the pivotal moment when the leading female activists and lawyers decided to mobilise in protest of Zia-ul-Haq’s regime. [The next post (part 3) will refer to the Hudood Ordinances and its effects]. *** I understand that my choice of words may seem to be harsher than necessary- but it is about time that we understand where the problem lies. Islam, without a doubt, has beautiful teachings which- in theory- would format a perfect society. However, that does not mean that imperfect humans can not exploit and distort it to further their own agendas. Religion is a tool that has been the easiest to play with for many politicians, and they have used it to their advantage for centuries. Lahir dengan nama lengkap Syekh Yusuf Abul Mahasin Tajul Khalwati Al-Makassari Al-Bantani atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Syekh Yusuf Al-Makasari. Lahir dari pasangan Abdullah dan Aminah lalu memulai pendidikan agama di Cikoang saat usia 15 tahun. Syekh Yusuf juga berguru pada Sayyid Ba-Alawi bin Abdul Al-Allamah Attahir dan Sayyid Jalaludin Al-Aidid. Pernah singgah di Aceh lalu pergi ke Gujarat dan bertemu dengan Syekh Nuruddin Ar-Raniri, salah seorang penasihat Sulthanah Shafiyatuddin. Beliau berkelana selama kurang lebih 20 tahun mulai dari Gujarat, Yaman, Damaskus (Suriah) hingga akhirnya ke Makkah dan Madinah. Selesai menimba ilmu, Syekh Yusuf kembali ke Nusantara. Konon, ia tidak kembali ke Gowa, tetapi ke Banten dan bertempat tinggal di wilayah kerajaan yang saat itu dipimpin oleh Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Syekh Yusuf ditangkap Belanda ketika Kesultanan Banten dekalahkan Belanda tahun 1682. Hingga akhirnya beliau diasingkan ke Sri Langka tahun 1684. Namun begitu semangatnya tidak surut. Syekh Yusuf melakukan dakwah dan penyebaran islam di Sri Langka yang dapat cukup menarik banyak murid. Salah satunya, ulama besar India, Syekh Ibrahim ibn Mian. Karena khawatir dakwah Syekh Yusuf akan berdampak oleh kepentingan politik Belanda di Nusantata, beliau dijatuhi hukuman mati. Karena ditentang oleh Raja Makassar dan Raja Alamghir di India, hukuman pun dibatalkan. Sebagai gantinya Syekh Yusuf dijatuhi pembuangan seumur hidup. Beliau diasingkan di Afrika Selatan pada tahun 1694.Di Afrika Selatan, Syekh Yusuf membangun permukiman di Cape Town yang sekarang dikenal sebagai Macassar. Dia pun dikenal sebagai orang pertama yang menyebarkan Islam di Afrika Selatan. Melihat jasa beliau, pemerintah Indonesia menanugerahi gelar pahlawan nasional tahun 1995. Lebih dari itu pada tahun 2005, Presiden Afrika Selatan Thabo Mbeki memberikan gelar Pahlawan Nasional Afrika Selatan kepada Syekh Yusuf. Begitu besar jasa-jasa beliau kepada umat Islam di Indonesia maupun di luar sana. १२ ज्योतिर्लिंगापैकी एक म्हणजे नर्मदा तीरावर वसलेल ओंकारेश्वर प्राचीन मंदिर मध्य प्रदेश. त्याच मंदिराच्या वरील बाजूस डोंगरात एक मांधता नावाचा राज महाल आहे. तो महाल अजूनही खूप सुंदर व त्या घराण्याची गादी तेथे स्थित आहे. घराण्याचे वंशज बाहेरगावी असतात. त्याच राजवाड्याच्या शेजारी एका लांब भिंतीला आसरा देऊन उभा केलेला हा विरगळ.
