SWIPE, there’s 3 photos Aiight so boom, I’m gonna pick on myself a little bit to make a point and I truly hope my message reaches those who need to see this. Let me start by saying “you don’t know what you don’t know”. In these photos from 2016, 25 year old Tig was a brand new firearms instructor. I did a ton of photo shoots to convey the message that black women can and should carry and learn how to use firearms. The problem with these images is that I’m breaking safety rules (1st and 2nd photo) and I have an improper two handed grip (1st and 3rd photo). My thumbs should be forward (it’s better, just trust me), my fingers should never be on the trigger and I shouldn’t be pointing my firearm at the viewer. I’m also holding two firearms (2nd photo) which is HIGHLY impractical for real life. It doesn’t matter that I know none of these firearms were loaded. “Perception is reality” and if it looks like I’m being unsafe, then I am. To the untrained eye the photos look cool and are attention-catching HOWEVER my responsibility as a firearms professional is to present proper firearm safety and handling techniques. Every day I see cute photos of men and women using firearms as props (not really mad at this). The issue is the unsafe and improper handling of firearms in these photos could confuse those who don’t know better. I don’t want anyone to look at me breaking the safety rules or using a trash grip and think it’s ok. As an instructor, how can I use a photo of me breaking safety rules to advertise firearm safety classes. Crazy right? Anyone who posts photos holding or using firearms has the responsibility to make sure they’re doing so properly. So if you see something wrong, politely and respectfully say something because sometimes people just “don’t know what they don’t know”. More often than not folks that don’t directly know me assume that I have some high-speedo Ninja type SOF background based on what I have done since retiring from the Marine Corps. While I find this humbling, I’d like to clarify that I have never been in Delta Force nor a book writing/movie producing SEAL unit(not gay). I’m not some high-speedo Marine sniper or pipe-hitter with MARSOC. I was never in the Air Force and am not a PJ/CCT sky-god. Never did any time as a member of the Marine Corps reconnaissance community (BN or Force). I have been fortunate to have been exposed to great people over the years both in the military and out. People that I have learned a tremendous amount from. As the lead editor of this latest issue of @glamcult, I find it vital to publicly hold myself accountable for upholding white supremacy and perpetuating cycles of oppression. Before I continue, I wish to state that I was called out (rather, invited to learn and grow) in private by someone I was close with at the time. Without them holding me accountable, this statement would never have been made. Instead of holding myself accountable immediately however, I tried whitesplaining my friend and arguing why the decisions the magazine team had made were right in their own way. So, my thank you and apology are due where they are due, and not just to my friend whom I let down and neglected, but to all whom I have hurt through my actions. While I do not disregard the work of the artists and teams involved in this issue, it is beyond clear that the narrative of “urgency” cannot be so predominantly centred around the white/ white-passing artists this magazine issue presents and uplifts. The work I did to amplify the queer Black artists, who are at the forefront of urgent matters globally, was not enough. The excuses for me not doing the work, or my “good” intentions, are also irrelevant… And most importantly, this is not something only related to my work for this issue, but has been present throughout other work&relationships. I acknowledge I have been on the wrong side of history at the expense of others’ livelihood. I do realize however that words or online accountability can never gain trust if not backed up by actions towards dismantling white supremacist and imperialistic beliefs and behaviour. Beyond this post and my online activity, I commit to anti-racist in all spheres of my life—actively challenging white supremacist family&friend groups, making space through work opportunities, directly supporting individuals, re-distributing savings&generational wealth. Eliminating harm, practicing accountability as an act of care, and actively making space for one another’s healing&growth is a community existence that I strongly believe in and will be tirelessly working towards. - @valkandechev on Instagram
