Did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world? Yup. It’s that bad. The fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions by generating greenhouse gases when manufacturing, producing and transporting clothing. Synthetic fibers (ex: polyester and acrylic are a few) are used in up 72% of our clothing and can take up to 200 years to decompose. The fact that it takes these unnatural materials so long to decompose is another reason I love vintage poly—I know if it ends up in a landfill (15% of our clothing is recycled or donated leaving 85% to go to the landfills) it will take a very long time to decompose. But what about water, Courtney? It takes 200 tons of fresh water to dye one ton of clothing. 85% of the daily needs of water in the entire population of India would be covered by the water used to grow cotton in the country. Think you are being sustainable because you buy all natural materials? Think again. It takes 20,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of cotton. Are you starting to see the problem? Fast fashion and extreme consumerism has allowed for a “wear it a couple times for a photo and throw it away” attitude that HAS GOT TO STOP. Influencers have a major role in what becomes “trendy” and I believe they have a social responsibility to support sustainability. Wearing second hand clothing is a somewhat easy thing many of us can do to decrease our carbon footprint. I understand that buying secondhand/Thrifting/vintage has privileges built in which is why it is even more important for those of us who can shop secondhand to do so. You don’t have to be perfect, but being a more conscious consumer is an excellent start. That doesn’t mean you have to buy vintage or shop with me, any second hand clothing works! What does this all have to do with voting? Well there are still politicians out there (ehem) that do not believe that global warming is real. It is real and it is going to change life as we know it if we all don’t step up to the plate. What change in your consumer habits related to fashion can you adjust to be more sustainable? They see a black woman and only see someone who could be a criminal, a defendant in court, because that is a stereotype most associated with black men and women. These racial stereotypes are so deeply entrenched in us even when we don’t realise or acknowledge them. As a brown woman navigating predominantly white spaces, I have been: 👉🏽mistaken for a cleaner or service staff several times when I was a professor 👉🏽 Racially profiled in my own University 👉🏽 mistaken for a waitress at an exclusive reception where I gave a keynote talk 👉🏽 asked by a student if he could have a white male professor as supervisor because that would be better And many more such incidents of course. We all make decisions based on these templates we carry in our brains, we form stereotypes based on what we see around us and from our experiences and memories, we judge people very quickly based on labels we assign to them and the membership of groups based on skin colour. Sometimes they are a matter of life and death. And what we need to think about is what we are going to do about it. We all have individual accountability and responsibility to address our own biases. And urgently. Remembering Dr. Shere Hite, renowned feminist sex educator best known for her groundbreaking book “The Hite Report: A Nationwide Study of Female Sexuality,” who died at her home in England on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at the age of 77, after suffering from Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. Born in Germany in 1942, Dr. Hite was recognized throughout the world for her work on psychosexual behavior and gender relations. She was director of the National Organization for the Women’s Feminist Sexuality Project from 1972 to 1978 and, since that time, she has acted as director of Hite Research International. In addition to The Hite Report: A Nationwide Study of Female Sexuality, Dr. Hite was the author of The Hite Report on Men and Male Sexuality, and Sex and Business, among many others. Hite renounced her American citizenship in 1995 and the past 25 years in Europe and the UK. She will be missed dearly.
