But, the cake is always there and so is the smile and the song that sounds like a hundred cows mooing. In tune or not — I listen, and her absence feels soothed in right places with his voice. My mother loved me the most, he says, and laughs, hahahah. She loved me, hahaha, he laughs harder and takes out an old photograph from the chest pocket. Rubs it on his cheeks, laughs, smiles, rubs again — hahaha, laughs and keeps it back. Most of the Saturdays, the bus is late and so are the cabs; so, I listen to him sing about sad men banging their chest without an ache and depressed teenagers sighing in rhythm to the tap water clutching the curtains — and he sings; about earrings and bindis and women draped in blood; about fathers waiting hopelessly for a hug; about beggars staring at blinking traffic lights and of all, he sings about longing - loving - losing. I dont speak: he never asks me to; we munch on the piece of cupcake in the middle of a lost night — we were two men, a quiet boy and an overtly loud old beggar, standing at a lonely bus stand with nowhere to go and nothing to find.
