In her essay “The Civil Contract of Photography,” Ariella Azoulay explores the three actors present in photography: the photographer, the photographed subject, and the spectator. At any instance, we are a part of this triangular relationship, and thus agree to the unspoken contract of photography. In this reading group, participants will explore the role photography plays setting up these three actors and with whom the power lies. Readings will not only explore how photography has forced relationships between people and spaces but also how it’s informed (and transformed) technology like facial recognition.
