THE HOSPITAL trust serving #Solihull has become the first in the country to record more than a thousand coronavirus deaths. The grim milestone comes as councils in the Birmingham and Solihull area record accelerating rates of Covid transmission. Following a week with eight coronavirus deaths in the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, the combined number of deaths stands at 1,001 (September 27). The trust is one of the largest in the UK, treating over two million people annually. But passing the thousandth victim point will compound fears that infection rates in Birmingham and Solihull are becoming hard to control. The figures make UHB NHS Foundation Trust the first to record more than 1000 deaths, with the second highest East London’s St Bart’s Health NHS Trust at 635 deaths in total. Speaking on Friday (September 25), Clive Wright, West Midlands convener for the Department of Health, said: “We are at a pivotal point in what is a rapid increase in the spread of coronavirus. “As we know, the government has announced new measures in response to increased levels of transmission this week. “The area in the West Midlands with the highest infection rate is Birmingham which has reached over 100 per 100,000. “Solihull remains in intervention within the framework. “All councils are working tirelessly to deal with the virus, and there are great examples of advice and support offered to businesses and communities in Solihull. “This week’s rates across the West Midlands per 100,000 stands at 47.2 in Coventry, up from 34.6. “Solihull’s rate has gone down slightly from 69.8 to 67.9, and in Warwickshire the rate of infection has risen 21 to 24. “Some of this can be explained by increased testing, but it is clear the disease is spreading more rapidly. Across England, the total of deaths stands at 29.908, with 41,988 victims of the pandemic counted to September 28. On Sunday, the country recorded 5,693 new cases. An estimate from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), released on Septemeber 25, suggested that roughly one in 500 people in England had coronavirus in the week ending September 19. Two Missouri hairstylists, who were later revealed to be COVID-19 positive, did not cause any new coronavirus infections, despite being around seven other employees and 140 clients, thanks to their use of PPE equipment. The hairstylists, who work at Great Clips in Springfield, USA, were experiencing coronavirus symptoms at the time. Despite this, no other employees or clients developed any signs of the coronavirus infection. Of the individuals exposed, 46 were tested for COVID-19, with all tests returning negative. Using contact tracing, all others, who had not received a test, quarantined for the 14 day incubation period. These individuals were called on a daily basis, in order to evaluate their health condition. Surprisingly, there were no reports of COVID-19 symptoms, despite the exposure to the virus. It is believed that the salon’s social distancing methods, coupled with staggered appointments and mandatory face coverings, successfully prevented the virus from spreading. Additionally, as the salon kept exceptionally up-to-date and detailed records of their clients, it allowed contact tracing to be possible. As there were no new infections, it highlights the importance of containment measures and the benefits associated with contact tracing and self isolation following exposure. The county’s director of health, Clay Goddard, stated, “This is exciting news about the value of masking to prevent Covid-19. We are studying more closely the details of these exposures, including what types of face coverings were worn and what other precautions were taken to lead to this encouraging result. Occurrences such as this also provide additional insight into the spread of coronavirus and help to improve our understanding into the effectiveness of various containment measures. Earlier in June a study, in Lancet medical journal, found that the change of transmission without a face mask was 17.4%, while that fell to 3.1% when a mask was worn. In response to this study, and similar research, many nations are encouraging their general public to wear masks where possible. This includes the United Kingdom, where masks became mandatory in enclosed public places in July. - @pblmagazine on Instagram

This underwater data center will be deployed for five years, and includes 12 racks with 864 servers and 27.6 petabytes of storage. Thats enough for about 5 million movies. . The data center is powered by an undersea cable and renewable energy from the Orkney Islands. . Simply adjust the number of portions you need to meet your own personal macro goals. MEN: doubling these portion suggestions (ex: 2 palms for protein, 2 thumbs for fats, etc) would put you between ~2,300-3000 calories if you were eating 3-4 meals/day. WOMEN: the portion sizes above would put you between ~1,200-1,500 calories each day if you were eating 3-4 meals/day. That being said, ACTIVE men and women would do best with 6-8 servings of each food group per day (That’s ~1500-2100 calories for women). Effective today, the City of Huntington Beach will be reopening our beaches and beach bike pathway for active recreation only. The decision to reopen the beaches in Surf City was made after extensive discussions with other local area cities and State representatives, including those at the California Natural Resources Agency and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Of note, the State beaches (Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach) will also be reopening today with active recreation protocols consistent with those being implemented by the City. Under the new active recreation regulations, the following protocols will be enforced at local beaches: - Beaches will be open every day from 5 a.m. – 10 p.m. - Only active recreation activities will allowed at the beaches -Physical social distancing requirements are required -Beaches (excluding those in Huntington Harbor) and beach pathways will be open -Walking, running, hiking, bicycle riding, etc. (where normally allowed) will be facilitated -Ocean will be open to swimming, surfing, bodysurfing, boogie boarding, kite surfing, paddle boarding, skim boarding, kayaking, and other similar ocean activities. -Fishing will be allowed from the beach and other ocean access locations, in those places where fishing activities are normally allowed, so long as social distancing requirements are abided by. -Within Huntington Harbor and all connected channels, active recreation such as kayaking, boating, and paddle boarding will be allowed. Microplastics are most present in fish, bottled water, salt, beer...😰 . A new study by the University of Newcastle in Australia has found that in average, people ingest 5 grams of plastic every week, or 2,000 microplastic particles. . This is equivalent to eating a credit card every week! 💳 . Microplastic particles generally come from plastic gradually breaking down into small pieces in nature. They make their way into our rivers and ocean, and can be eaten by fish. . However, microplastics have also been found in many everyday food and drinks, such as water, beer, shellfish or salt. . Surprisingly, where we find the most microplastic is in drinking water. Every person consumes around 1,769 microplastic particles every week just by drinking water. It is even more when drinking bottled water! . Shellfish is the second biggest source with 182 microplastic particles ingested per week, followed by salt and beer with 10 microplastic particles per week. . ❓What can we do about it? . The only way to reduce the amount of microplastics in the environment is to reduce the amount of plastic we use: . 1️⃣ Use a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush 2️⃣ Say NO to plastic straws 3️⃣ Use soap bars for hand and body wash 4️⃣ Carry a reusable bottle with you at all time 5️⃣ Bring your reusable bag when shopping 6️⃣ Bring your own cup when buying coffee . Many things in our daily lives can blunt our hunger cues. These include, but are not limited to, intense exercise, academic stress, family stress, discrimination, trauma, diet culture, desire to be thin, history of dieting, and a global pandemic. We all know that eating is essential to survival, so our bodies have developed pretty obvious signals to let us know when we need to eat. ••Without enough food, our bodies naturally compensate with powerful biological and psychological mechanisms such as food obsession/preoccupation, stomach growling, social withdrawal, increased neuropeptide Y (drives us to crave carbohydrates), menstrual disruption in females, low testosterone in males, suboptimal bone health and poor muscle recovery. •••Everyone’s biological hunger cues are slightly different, so it is important to start to tune in to what *YOUR* body is telling you. If you are not used to paying attention to your hunger cues, trusting them, or feel that they are regularly blunted, you may want to consider eating for self-care on a schedule of every 2-4 hours. Remember, the most important thing you can do as an athlete is to get enough to eat. Use your sports dietitians as resources if assessing, honoring or trusting your hunger cues ever becomes confusing or challenging. As protests of the criminal justice system raged on last summer following the deaths of unarmed African Americans at the hands of the state, a deeper systemic issue needs to be addressed: economic access post-interaction from the criminal justice system. The Brennan Center reported that individuals incarcerated earlier in life earn about half as much annually as individuals from the same socioeconomic background who remained untouched by the system. In Maryland, the primary cause for this disparity revolves around access to dignified, sustainable employment post-incarceration which is severely limited for returning citizens. Thus, criminal record expungement is vital for the 1.5 million Marylanders who live with the daily burden of a record. Yet, the State doesn’t allow petitions for expungement of either felonies or misdemeanors until at least a decade after release. Worse, even if an individual was found not guilty of a crime, they must wait three years before they can have the incident expunged. As schools prepare for the start of another year, we encourage parents, teachers, and community officials to keep in mind the important role that environmental factors play in health. In a recent report prepared by Healthy Schools Network and the New Jersey Work Environmental Council, the organizations have assembled a call to action for states and public agencies, asking them to provide guidance for schools on how to successfully prepare for reopening. The findings touch on a number of important environmental factors to consider that contribute to health (or lack thereof) within the school setting such as indoor air quality, safer pest management, drinking water, and building conditions. However, one of the most pressing environmental factors facing schools as they reopen this year is the increased pressure for consistent and effective cleaning and disinfecting measures. The report creators advocate for the use of soap and water as well as the replacement of classroom cleaners with “unscented, third-party certified green general all-purpose cleaners and safer disinfectants.” We applaud the conscious effort to move schools towards safer cleaning alternatives. Effective cleaning and disinfecting will be crucial this coming school year, and it remains imperative to find less toxic ways to accomplish these goals. By utilizing less toxic cleaning methods, schools can create a healthier school environment, which contributes to the overall health and wellness of students and staff. Today kicks off the third annual National Expungement Week! Started in 2018 in Washington DC by a coalition of nonprofits, the celebration seeks to shine a light on the systemic injustices perpetrated against those individuals who have an interaction with the criminal justice system and then are prevented from successfully reentering into society. According to the National Employment Law Project (NELP), 1 in 3 Americans - 70 million Americans - have some sort of arrest or conviction record that appears in a routine criminal background check. For low income workers, the record can be a key determinant in whether or not they can secure employment, housing, admission to a job training program, college, and other critical resources. For years, JOTF has seen the devastating impact of the criminal record on low income workers, particularly Black workers, and has advocated for an expungement process that is accessible, fair, and allows everyone who wants it to benefit from a second chance. We are clear that robust expungement reform is a key tool that will benefit the many communities that have been criminalized as a result of their poverty and race. Cece, from this community, wrote to us about her dear friend Rena* -- who is raising her three beautiful children on her own, and whose washing machine broke a while back. The cost of replacing it was too much for Rena’s already strained budget. So Rena was forced to hand wash the entire family’s laundry in the bathtub while she tried to save for a new washing machine.
