It’s been a while since I had the need to write in a book, I usually do that with science books but not that often with fictions, but oh my! this book was intense! No matter what. You are worthy. I was trying to keep this short, but as I read these words by @poetryofdhiman this came to mind. Many don’t know, but behind the smiling exterior for years I believed a “good life” was for other people — not for me. I was convinced that somewhere along the line I had screwed up so badly that I would never come to know a life I loved. I would look on at others with envy, and jealously that would eventually turn to self-loathing and sadness. No one knew and what I do know is our secrets keep us sick. I eventually found the courage to seek help — mentors, guides, coaches that could show me a different way. I found the strength to sit with many a dark night of the soul in order to heal. I let go of my unworthiness and reached for the divine worth within. The worth I was born with. The truth that happiness was my birthright. The love I was seeking that was always within. If you’re reading this and you’re feeling like a good life is not for you or that you have effed up so badly the Universe is conspiring against you, I want you to know — that’s not true. It may take a little work. It may take unlearning some lies you’ve told yourself, but I want you to know. You are worthy of a good life. You deserve peace, love, and happiness. I’m asking you to hold on and be willing to try and see it. And if you can’t? Hold on to my belief for you. I see you. I’m here for you. I’m rooting for you. A new season 🍂🍁To know me is to know I love Fall! It’s the time of year I’m the happiest, I feel the most grounded, and I feel the most optimistic. I love the clothing, the cool breeze whipping thru my scalp, the colorful leaves, walking the dogs, and the decrease in bugs and snakes...lol! This October is about me! I’m gonna be selfish and work on me. I have a tendency to give and give, and be neglectful of myself. My health and sobriety are priority #1. That’s how it should be! That’s healing. Caption: “I remember when I was going through one of my worst battles, and I turned to Allah and I said “I don’t want to feel this way, why are you punishing me?” I told Him, that I didn’t know what I was feeling and it was the scariest feeling. I told Him, that I didn’t think I was a bad person, I tried my best to do good, so why did He choose to punish me? I kept asking these questions. I kept thinking that my pain was a punishment from Him. I remember those nights, very clearly. I stood in prayer almost every night, whilst everyone else laid fast asleep. And I remember, my heart kept taking me to that prayer mat. And then one night I sat on the prayer mat a little longer.. I asked myself, if Allah was punishing me, surely He wouldn’t call me towards Him, right? Surely, the worst punishment, would have been the punishment I gave myself. I mean, surely, it would have been worse if I was to seek answers amongst the dunya, when really, they were always with Him? I know that previous to this, I wouldn’t have searched for answers with Allah. I thought I was content. But I didn’t know what that meant until Allah gave me a trial and called me towards Him. Perhaps He knew my heart needed mending, and decided to help me mend it, through prayer. Through Him. Another letter to my former self: One year ago today I received the news that I had No Evidence of Disease, affectionately called NED. I struggle to adequately explain how I was feeling in the weeks and months preceding this news, after my stem cell transplant. I felt inwardly despondent, despairing, depressed. Utterly without hope. While outwardly pretending to be my cheery, happy self. This news changed my life completely, allowing me to move forward and try to put the cancer chapter behind me. But this post isn’t about that. It is the lucky one’s who get to grow old, who have the chance to live a whole life. And for everyone person who gets the cancer all-clear news, there are those who will never hear this. Those whose lives will always be tainted by cancer and illness. It seems more of my friends in the cancer community are getting bad hands dealt to them with their scans and I feel broken for them. So this post of for them, and in the hope that all those who are healthy and take their lives for granted, that they will not lament the fact that they are growing older, but recognise how lucky they are to be given that chance. Always think of those away from whom this chance at growing old has been taken by illness or by the unjust brutalism they face by just being who they are. And think of those, beleagured by illness, who are living on in the now with as much gusto and love that anyone else can spread over a lifetime. This one’s for the heroes - @dizzdalton on Instagram

Did you know I never wanted to name my salon my own name? I had long lists of cute names... but I struggle with “decision making disorder—- DMD” (is that a thing?). Everything under the sun sounded so cheesy, or so trendy that I was afraid it would be cheesy in 5 years or so. But we ran out of time, I ran out the clock and had to make a decision. So here we are. . I didn’t/ still don’t want the spotlight. I hide in a corner room. It’s not about me, our salon is the sum of our parts. Each person makes it whole. . Technically since we are a both rental salon, we are all in competition with each other. But I believe in healthy competition. And ——some people are gonna unfollow me for this one—— I DO NOT believe that “comparison is the thief of joy” 😱! . In fact, I believe that Jealousy is. Comparing is exactly how I got where I am. Admiring those who do it better, and making changes, asking questions and buckling down accordingly has made me better. It’s made all of us better. . To be honest, if I never compared my work and business to others who are doing it better I might just sit content never knowing the possibilities. Is it discouraging at first? Sometimes it can be. Only if it spills over into hopeless wishing. . Instead—- Do search for those killing the game. Do admire and compare. Be encouraged by them that it is POSSIBLE to do amazing things. Set your goals. Buckle Down. Grind your teeth + PRAY. . You may look back in a few years like me and kind of be a bit proud and amazed at the outcome. . This past August, OCIN celebrated its second birthday and we’ve been trying to think of small ways to say thank you. Since the beginning, OCIN has existed to build community and a safe space to connect, educate, and inspire. As a young business, the past two years have only reaffirmed this value; our friends and family have always cheered us on and we’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with so many amazing brands and artists in our collective. ⠀ ⠀ But, we also know how difficult it is to start a business from the ground up, and have experienced a lot of learnings. Weve had to pivot and be flexible, especially with all the wild and overwhelming events that have happened this year. Being a female, POC-owned brand, we empathize with many challenges faced by minority communities and small businesses, which are being amplified by the landscape of the current world. We recognize that we have the privilege to use our platform to support our community, and this has inspired us to create a program that can hopefully add value to the journeys of other entrepreneurs.⠀ ⠀ The Ripple Effect is an OCIN thought-sharing initiative that aims to give back to small businesses that are new or might be just starting. My first rejection slip! 1966. Beverly Sky (who is now my best friend of more than 50 years) and I were counselors at Blue Mountain Camp. After the kids were asleep, we’d sit on the porch of our cabin, smoke weed, and write (me) and illustrate (her) our opus, Grimm Tales for Fairy Children. I recently found this in some old papers and tacked it up on my wall because I love thinking about those two girls who were just excited about making art. It didn’t matter that our book was silly, that no one in their right mind would ever want to read it, let alone publish it. What mattered was that we were wading into the waters of creativity and we liked it there. Beverly was already living the life of an artist. She was my first role model and inspiration that I could also live that life. I don’t think we were discouraged by the rejection. The fact that someone—even “the rejection slip sender”—thought our work was “a groove,” was validation enough. I wish I’d saved all my rejection slips over the years so I could come into a workshop and dump a dozen big garbage bags filled with them into the middle of the floor!
