I recently had a great sesh in one area around Imst called „Niederthai“. I discovered some nice climbs auch as „Patrimoine Mouille, 8a“. In and after the crux the holds were pretty dirty, to me the route seemed a bit lost. I cleaned imperative holds and found a hard but interesting beta. Each move needed to be synched and precise footwork was essential. However, regardless of what strange body position I tried to come up with, the moves seemed fairly hard for that grade. As I saw promissing sending burns far away, I surprised myself that somehow I could dispatch the route in my next attempt. Our dog & bike #zeroco2 climbing tour is going well! We just sent « Des Kaisers neue Kleider » on our first day on it;-) @sebertheclimber and I had a massive fight ! The day started with low expectations due to some rain and low cloud but @sebertheclimber unshakeable motivation contaminated the rest of the team and fooled me to start climbing on the first pitch even under the rain. We decided we would climb until the wetness or our weakness would stop us but the cloud lifted and as we climbed up the hold got dryer and dryer. The first crux pitch was wet but after a good fight and many tries we both sent it barely and then we arrived below the last hard pitch in the dark and pretty exhausted but the @sebertheclimber set the bar high by saying « I am not coming down without sending this pitch » and so we did!! At 4 AM I finally sent the last hard pitch and continued on to the summit one hour after @sebertheclimber had done the same. We were both relieved and happy ! We hear people say ‘oh she was ahead of her time’ quite often, but in the case of Lynn Hill it’s absolutely true. If any climber, male or female, had Lynn’s resumé today they would be pro, but she pushed climbing forward in the 80’s and 90’s and she’s been waiting 30 years for us all to catch up. Any of her achievements would raise eyebrows today and she’s still at it now, in these photos climbing with @ninacaprez on The Nose a few years back. I rest a lot when I’m climbing. I rest when I’m pumped, when I’m nervous, or when my mind just needs a reset. If I can find a rest, I’ll use it. Mostly because all of these things can be greatly helped when the heart rate is lowered. But even if I can only get a mini shake on ok holds or just take a couple breaths, I feel immensely better when I can push pause for a second and refocus. . Anyway, thought I’d share :). Plus resting makes you look graceful. The southern Gran Paradiso national park is really a Rock Paradise The cragging of the Valle DellOrco is now well known, but its the mountain rock routes of this area that really interested me. The Becco Meridionale della Tribolazione dominates the skyline. We headed for the via Grassi-Re, but with a mixed forecast switched to the classic of the massif; via Malvassora. We were not disappointed, inbetween dodging showers enjoyed the excellent red gneiss. This route is about 20 meters long and pretty steep all the way to the top. After some failed attempts earlier this season, I could do the route now with ease and confidence. Our short road trip with @dickikorb unfortunately already came to an end. We had a great time though at Götterwandl, at Schleier Wasserfall and in Arco! I got a lot of routes done I always wanted to try. Some of them I was saving for onsights and flashes and thankfully at least one worked out. Gimme all your feelings. — I am (still) looking for roughly 4-5 sentences describing a difficult/painful thing you have experienced in regards to climbing (i.e. death, injury, sickness, a breakup, fear, failure). Why? — Because we tend to avoid the sad stuff, those awkward conversations that leave us hanging and not knowing what to say to other people when they tell us that someone died or theyre in pain or that theyre heart is broken—other than Im so sorry. But what happens when we talk openly about pain and weave it into a story can be really powerful. It helps us find meaning and value in struggle, and most importantly, it helps us find strength. It is necessary to talk openly about our pain in order to heal. — Excerpt from Do Not Go Outside to Cry: Failure gives you depth. It gives you mental tenacity. UPDATE: During the quarantine months we transformed our Foodtruck into a Camper Van. 😂🚚 It took us 6 weeks of moving the truck, repairing, planning and DIY building the #campervan. Zum Glück waren nur wenige Meter dieser 800m hohen Wand wirklich nass 👌Und am gemütlichen Hans-Berger Haus gibts nach der Tour gute Alternativen zum Aqua 🍻😇 Interessieren euch künftig eigentlich genauere Bildbeschreibungen? Oder ist mit einem Wisch eh alles weg? 🤔🙃 Lets try: ✨1) Sieht nach brutaler Seilreibung aus, fühlte sich zum Glück nicht so an ;) Unterwegs im zweiten und dritten Dachriegel, herrlich wasserzerfressen! ✨2) Während in Kufstein die meisten noch schlafen, sind wir am Weg durchs Kaisertal. ✨3) Da gibts sogar für den linken und rechten Fuß eine separate Wasserrillen. Die Natur denkt schon oft mit für uns Kletterer :-) ✨4) Empfehlenswertes Basecamp unter diesem steilen Zahn, durch den auch die Via Aqua verläuft. Wer genau hinblickt, entdeckt sogar das in den Fels gravierte Via im linken mittleren Wandteil. ✨5) Naja... irgendwie müssen die Wasserrillen ja auch entstehen ;) ✨6) Wasserrillen-Orgie schreibt Adi Stocker in seinem Longlines-Buch... und da ist was dran. Über 6 lange Seillängen nur Wasserrillen. ✨7) Aber wo sind auf einmal die Wasserrillen geblieben? 🤔 ✨8) Tip. Already some time ago I could spend some awesome and productive days in my beloved Gimmelwald. Besides getting a quick tick on ‚El Molinero‘, 8c+, I could as well get the first ascent of an old project I then called ‚Knockout‘ which would check in at 8c+ too. Later my focus moved on to the link-up of ‚Jungfrau Marathon‘, 9a and ‚Gimmelexpress‘, 8c+. Some tries later it turned out to be quite a bit harder than the original line of Jungfrau and I felt that this new version called ‚Inferno‘ could get the hard 9a or 9a/9a+. I first met Jenn Flemming 11 years (!!! 👵🏻) ago when she was working as a server at Japango. When she wasn’t serving Boulder’s finest 🤪, she quickly and quietly dispatched hard line after hard line: Evictor (12+ R), Freeline (13- R, FFA), the Free Grand (13a), the Quickening (13c), and Skinny Love (13c, second ascent). Then, she went to Harvard to get her master’s and to UMass to pursue her Ph.d in education programming in crisis and conflict settings. She now spends her free time at refugee camps trying to make better systems for some of the most in need. Also, she always looks effortlessly cool and is a talented “hobby” photographer. She took this photo a few weeks back. Check out her feed @jennflemm. Yesterday, Jenn came up with me to China Doll, and it felt pretty special to send with one of my closest friends belaying me. “I don’t see a real shift toward inclusivity in mainstream climbing media; it’s easy to highlight the same sorts of stories over and over. I think compelling stories can be found by looking a little deeper into the evolving demographic of the climbing community.” I said this in an interview, last October. It was recently quoted to me while being offered a column in a climbing magazine, which would run on a trial basis. This offer was the result of the magazine having “lots of talks”. Here’s my response: “...I’ve given your offer more thought, in particular your use of my quote as a way to frame who is responsible for making changes in mainstream climbing media. As you said above, “we’ve been having lots of talks” though you didn’t mention what was said. Ideally, it involved acknowledging that climbing media is overwhelmingly white, male and privileged, and positions itself as speaking not from any particular position but for the entire community and in doing so, assumes everyone is having/can have a white, male experience. And then a discussion ensued addressing what has allowed your magazine to remain disinterested in learning how to disrupt that narrative, until 2020. I fully understand what the optics are of having a female woman of colour author this column and that it allows your magazine to jump to a “solution” instead of doing the work it takes to face its complicity in the system. A piece of that work involves the white men at your magazine taking a clear, public stance on racism beyond a black square on Instagram one day out of the year. The route’s name is “Crimpy Hold” (in Ganesha Area, Badami), Way above my pay grade, but I think its important to get on all kinds of routes no matter how hard they seem, if not with mindset to send them, at least with the desire to learn something new! Do you recall what was going on in your head? “Oh my god, this is so hard!” “How in gods name do I release my hand to grab the next hold?” What drives you to climb harder? There are a lot of things that drive me to climb harder, such as: - The constant desire to go beyond what I think my mind and body are capable of. - The satisfaction of finally accomplishing a goal Ive been working hard on. High above the Valley a few years ago when you could see El Cap from Taft Point. There was a nasty fire in the park that year in 2017, and since then both clean air and water are things I will never take for granted again. Thoughts go out to the homies in CA and the people affected by the fires, fingers crossed for some much needed rain. Exactly 2 years ago I went to the Arctic Circle for my first time. It was also the first time I sent a 1k+ line and the first time I had to deal with EXTREMELY high winds on very long highlines. Its crazy. It really shows you how powerless we sometimes still are when mother nature takes over control. (This is footage by @smileyvideography from 2 years ago in Senja) Last week we went back North, this time to Sweden rather than Norway and we rigged a 1.9k line, mostly to test this terrain for an even bigger project in the future. Unfortunately the wind shut us down again, less than 24h after the line was up. We still have lots to learn... Im sad that I couldnt get on this line, with my run being scheduled for the 2nd day, just before the winds kicked in, but Im glad we rigged it and Im extremely proud of and happy for @quirinherterich for sending the line on his first attempt right after rigging. You earned it, man! And Im even more proud of the whole team who came together in this beautiful but rough and rather highline-unfriendly terrain to work together on something big. Chapeau my guys!
