Anybody who knew my sister Vanessa (or Avery to some) knew she was smart, brave, adventurous, ambitious, artistic and bold. It breaks my heart by how much i regret not calling her more, by how i didn’t tell her i loved her enough, by failing to let her know how proud i was of her. But I’m grateful to have been able to see her get married and to have walked her down the aisle, travel with her, collaborate with her (she was always both my harshest critic and biggest supporter) and I feel grateful that she reached a happy place with her work and rediscovered her passion for writing. My sister was always complicated, and due to her bipolar disorder she really struggled. But even with the low lows, it was nothing compared to the memory of her high highs, when i could make her laugh uncontrollably for hours. Now that she’s gone the only things I can find comfort in is knowing that she’s been reunited with my Dad and that her struggle with her own mental health is over; so i hope now she can truly rest in peace. She once wrote that one of the things that kept her going was the idea that if you chased the sunset it could always be daytime. August, 29 2017. The last time I was really willing to smile. Here’s a video from a trip to San Diego right around that time, Owen was almost 1! Then here’s a photo from today. . . I’m starting to dig through a lot of reasons why I’ve been unhappy lately, unsatisfied, but a big one was my actual smile. My front right tooth is fake from an old basketball injury, an elbow to the front tooth that killed it and required a replacement. . . August 29, 2017 I went to a bad dentist in Shawnee and have been afraid to smile sense. The tooth they put in was colored incorrectly, didn’t fit right, and I wasn’t confident enough to speak up and to say something. . . As a result when I did smile it was always a half smile, or a smirk. I would never fully smile which always weighed on me because I have a great smile! Even a cute little dimple I gave myself when I was 5! 😂 . . The point of this post is not only have I been working a ton lately on fixing myself, looking within, on giving myself more reasons to smile. I also went to the dentist today and got that front tooth fixed and it looks great! I’m not afraid to smile anymore. 😁 . . What’s holding you back from finding that joy in your life? What’s the smile that’s gone missing in your life? What are the little things in your life that don’t seem like a big deal but keep adding up and stealing your joy? Start to dig deep, look within, and don’t be afraid to smile. I believe in life we are all exactly where we are supposed to be, we are all perfect.
