An enormous influence on my first album, this man exemplified the power of imagination. As he began his career as a film composer, with limited options and a tiny budget, he improvised. The result defined a genre. Even without the lush, full sound of an orchestra that was commonplace in 60s cinema, his scores, were so captivating, so utterly unique that they could stand alone. “The music is indispensable, because my films could practically be silent movies, the dialogue counts for relatively little, and so the music underlines actions and feelings more than the dialogue,” Sergio Leone . We are proud to share that IHADLA #DreamerScholar Keneth Brown, II was featured in Voyage LA magazine. In this interview, Brown discusses how his journey in the music world began as a way to help his autism when he was a toddler. By age 12, he joined the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles which exposed him to perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall numerous times, played at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, performed on stage with MC Hammer at the Staples Center, and government officials such as Kamala Harris. Brown is currently a Junior at Morehouse College, majoring in music performance with an emphasis in trumpet. We are proud of his achievements and can’t wait to see what the future holds for our Dreamer Scholar! PASSINGS: STEVE GROSSMAN Someone jokingly commented that Liebman-Grossman sounded like a law firm!! For sure we were tight in the early 70s, even trading the saxophone chairs with the Elvin Jones and Miles Davis’ Groups. We WERE the happening sax players in the early ‘70s rooted in first generation post-Coltrane. Steve was the most talented of the “Jewish mafia” (Mike Brecker, Bob Berg, Grossman and myself). Legend has it that Steve’s older trumpet-playing brother got him into practicing and transcribing at first Bird, followed by Trane. By the time Steve was 15 years old, he sounded more like the originals than they did. Plus he played more than acceptable drums, bass and piano. With Miles, Steve was replacing Wayne Shorter, a pretty heavy load for an 18 year old guy. Musically, he and I were trying to deal with pentatonics and chromaticism, pushing the tenor into other sonic areas. We played quite a bit of free jazz in my midtown loft during those years. For a time we even roomed together. The next decades found Steve doing one-nighters and the like in Europe, kind of slipping through the New York jazz cracks. He got into Newk, while staying the course of upholding the bebop tradition. We had a lot of fun together, especially in Elvin’s group with the addition of bassist Gene Perla. The ”Live At The Lighthouse” recording remains as a testament to Steve and myself reaching forth.Talking raw talent, that was Steve Grossman to the tee!! - @dave_liebman on Instagram

It was a cold and rainy night in Rome when John Convertino and I went for a walk with our good friend Carlo Martelli through some of the ancient neighborhoods. We were soaking up the mood of the place and suddenly the conversation turned towards il Maestro. We had just walked near the Roman Forum and were near his apartment. “Wouldn’t it be great to see him and have a chance to say hello” one of us said. So we walked by his residence to tip our hats to the one who had poured so much creativity and liveliness into the world of improvisation and soundtrack music. We traveled far from our Sonoran Desert home where a rainy day there is considered not only a rarity but a sign. Much like Morricone’s work there is a lot of space for nuances to whisper some of the more subtle aspects of his music and allow for signs to be felt and heard. I love how experimental he was as a composer and storyteller. His use of unique combinations of instruments in his arrangements still catch my attention when listening to his body of work. Perhaps the fact that he started out as a trumpet player has something to do with his orchestral voice and the connection we felt to our own group’s use of trumpets or maybe it lies in the strong sense of mood and place with his music. So there we were standing in the rain paying our respects to Il Maestro and Carlo having worked at RCA for many years told us a great story. During a recording session Some years ago there was a short break and all of the musicians left the studio. When they returned the electric guitarist who had left his instrument leaning on the gas heater found that the strings were all out of tune. Without having a chance to retune the warped sounding guitar the orchestra began playing. When it came to the guitar’s part Morricone heard the strange sound, stopped the orchestra and instructed the guitar player directly “don’t change a thing” and kept going. I love that. It encapsulates a lot about who he is and what makes his music so great. I imagine he was an exceptionally good listener. Here’s to you il Maestro with hats full of rain and gratitude from the glowing heart of the world. Grazie il Maestro #morricone - @casadecalexico on Instagram

Quick story: so this was from my second year at Berklee. It was my first semester with the Rainbow Band (top bigband at Berklee) and it was our first performance at the Gala. My mom took this picture and I before this I was disappointed that she came all the way to Boston and wouldn’t see me play a solo. (I was in the second tenor chair, and I didn’t think I’d get a chance cause I only had one song that had a solo for me at the time) ...then @ray_ez_monteiro and @miguelgandelman came in the room. Ray was in this band before this semester and I think their band, Spontaneous, was also playing the gala (w/ @jerieljohnson_ and @rashidaayanna). From the back of the packed room I hear them yelling: “LET JAMES PLAY! WE WANNA HEAR JAMES!” So, Phil Wilson calls my song, the only “funk” song we have in the book and I get to solo and my mom gets to hear. Ray and Miguel have gone on to be two of the most in-demand musicians in LA (Miguel is also one of the most in demand producers) while also being just as honest and real as they were when I was 19 and wondering if I was even good enough to do this. Just wanna give a shout of appreciation cause something that small made a huge difference in my life 🙏🏾. - @jamescaseysax on Instagram

“The first Charlie Parker number I heard was called Blue Bird. I was blown away by the propulsion, the charisma, and the joyful spirit of it. Also the stellar saxophone playing, which technically is on the highest level. There was a completeness to it, which I’ve spent my whole life trying to emulate – which is nothing to do with imitation, because my style is very different. It has the balanced quality of all the great art that I really love. It’s as much intellectual as it is soulful, it speaks to sorrow and it speaks to joy, with a undertone of compassionate humour. There’s something so human about what Charlie Parker does.” Rudresh Mahanthappa. ********************************* #charlieparker #birdlives #yardbird #jazz #bebop #altosax #birdland - @yardbirdlives on Instagram

72 years ago to the day Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. Thank you to our parents and grandparents who survived through unimaginable levels of racism only to be told they were not wanted or deserved to be here when the country had got 50 years plus use of their labour and hard work doing the jobs that the white population did not want to do. We salute you and thank you for your sacrifice and giving us the platform that we now fight on for equality and we demand that the compensation for all those affected in this racist scandal be resolved quickly. #windrush #windrushscandal - @pridemaguk on Instagram

THE WINDRUSH GENERATION Today marks when The Empire Windrush arrived into Tilbury Docks, bringing with it just over 1000 West Indians from the Caribbean Islands, on June 22nd 1948. Britain called upon it’s Commonwealth territories to fill it’s severe lack of labour force after World War 2 to help rebuild the country; many being ex-servicemen who fought for Britain in the war. The British Government promised citizenship, prosperity and employment for those who came, this saw an estimated half a million West Indians between 1948 and 1970 including my own grandparents and parents, travel 8000 miles from the Caribbean to begin a new life here in the UK. Despite suffering unimaginable racism across the country they persevered and helped to rebuild a country that has BARELY recognised their contribution. Fast forward to 2019 the anniversary was bittersweet, as around the same time it became clear that the Windrush generation were rewarded for their essential contributions by them finding themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws thanks to Theresa May’s “hostile environment policies”. Many were detained, denied legal rights and illegally deported. TILL THIS DAY no apology has been received from the home office and little to no justice served. I am a proud descendant of this generation and I stand on your shoulders. Thank you for all that you did despite the discrimination you endured. It is my duty to fight until the day that racial equality, truth and justice is known for us all...I owe you this much 🖤👊🏾✊🏾🇧🇧🇬🇾🇬🇧 • • • • • • #repost @nathalieemmanuel 🙏🏾 #TheWindrushGeneration #TheWindrushScandal #BlackBritishHistory #EternallyGrateful - @hurcs on Instagram

We’ve come a long way with the language we use to talk about our trans brothers and sisters, but we still have a long way to go.⁣ ⁣ Billy Tipton was an American jazz musician, bandleader, and talent broker. For decades, Tipton assumed a male gender identity. Tiptons female birth sex (AFAB) was not publicly revealed until after his death, and the revelation came as a surprise to family and friends.⁣ ⁣ Tiptons music career began in the mid-1930s when he led a band for radio broadcasts. He played in various dance bands in the 1940s and recorded two trio albums for a small record label in the mid-1950s. Thereafter, he worked as a talent broker. Tipton stopped performing in the late 1970s due to arthritis.⁣ ⁣ Tiptons sex was reportedly concealed from the four women who would later call themselves Mrs. Tipton. Tipton kept the secret of his extrinsic sexual characteristics from them by telling them he had been in a serious car accident that resulted in damaged genitals and broken ribs.⁣ ⁣ The existence of Trans people is not something new, they have always been here, are real and valid. We encourage you to learn more about trans people throughout history that have shaped our world. - @thedresscodeproject on Instagram
