Today, September 23, 1968, in The Beatles’ History, The Beatles were recording “Happiness Is A Warm Gun.” Studio Two, EMI Studios, Abbey Road Producer: Chris Thomas Engineer: Ken Scott One of the White Album’s highlights, ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’, had its first recording session on this evening. The session took place from 7pm-3am. The Beatles recorded 45 takes of the song, which had the working title Happiness Is A Warm Gun In Your Hand. John played guitar and sang a guide vocal, George was on another guitar, Paul played bass, and Ringo was on drums. The song’s various changes in tempo and time signature resulting in a number of breakdowns. GROSSONGS: A história por trás das canções. Toda quarta vou contar um pouco da história por traz de algumas canções que escrevi, como foram feitas, arranjadas e gravadas. Vou começar com a que considero a primeira canção “Decente” que fiz: “Lunático”. Ela tem uma clara influência do Pete Townshed no Riff de Guitarra de abertura e nos acordes da estrofe. A melodia veio depois de eu muito ouvir um disco do T.Rex gravado na BBC em que o Marc Bolan cantava lêem cima, em um tom bem alto. A inspiração da letra veio depois que li uma história em que o Syd Barret (“the lunatic is on the grass”) trancou a namorada dele no quarto e passava bolachas por debaixo da porta pra ela não morrer de fome (haha, pocoloco). A letra também fala de um sentimento rebelde do tipo vou-tacar-o-foda-se/ninguém-tem-nada-a-ver-com-isso... Fiz uma demo caseira em fita K7 no meu gravador de 4 canais Fostex X14 e mostrei pros guris da Cachorro Grande, que curtiram na hora, e ela logo entrou pro repertório, que na época incluía poucas canções próprias ainda. Na gravação, além da guitarra, toquei um baixo com Fuzz que já fazia parte do arranjo original da demo e que deixava a música com mais cara de The Who do que ela já tinha. Era uma ótima abertura para os shows da época e acabou sendo uma boa abertura para o álbum de estreia. Ganhou um clip, nosso terceiro, dirigido pelo amigo @marcnunes , que era basicamente a banda fazendo uma performance da música vestidos de terno branco com fundo preto e vice versa, em P&B. Lembro de a gente esperando a tinta secar depois de ter pintado o estúdio de preto para poder filmar. O clip tocou bastante na MTV na época, ajudando na projeção da banda fora do nosso estado natal e concorreu no VMB de 2002, levando a gente pela primeira vez na premiação/cerimônia/festa, que era uma loucura. Acabou se tornado uma canção que nunca saiu do repertório da banda, passando com o tempo a fechar os shows. Saddened to hear of the passing of Helen Reddy. Not only was she a world-class recording artist (go download her music), but she was an extraordinarily kind human being. About ten years ago, Helen came in to record a song for an episode of Family Guy. At the time, my mom, a big Reddy fan, was in the hospital battling cancer. Upon learning this, Helen picked up the phone right then and there and asked me to call the number. My mom was absolutely ecstatic, and Helen talked with her for a generous amount of time. One of my favorite things to point out while giving tours at the Archives was that we always strived to collect and include Everything Lesbian.. without prejudice towards differences in beliefs, and then I would show the boxes with Off Our Backs and On Our Backs living peacefully next to each other in the periodical room. off our backs (often referred to as oob) was an American radical feminist periodical (published from 1970 to 2008), by a collective of women who practiced consensus decision-making. From the first issue in February 1970: ..oob is a paper for all women who are fighting for the liberation of their lives and we hope it will grow and expand to meet the needs of women from all backgrounds and classes. The editors ask readers to use this paper to relate what you are doing and what you are thinking, for we are convinced that a woman speaking from the agony of her own struggle has a voice that can touch the experience of all women. The title of the magazine On Our Backs, the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the US, was a satirical reference to off our backs, which was sometimes thought of as prudish and not sex positive enough. off our backs regarded the new magazine as pseudo-feminist and threatened legal action over the logo OOB. On Our Backs was published from 1984 till 2006. Both titles had a loyal following and many subscribers read both- some of the LHA coordinators for instance appear in both publications. Due to a different filing system at LHA the titles no longer live in boxes next to each other... ☺ but we still have all the issues. Once we can safely open our building and collections again you can stop by and immerse yourself in these and many other titles.
