The days following Labor Day weekend are historically busy days for volunteer cleanup crews, and Surfrider chapters, at beaches and parks across the country. One of the most common materials leftover from the holiday festivities is – you guessed it – single-use plastic. The most important thing you can do is to use less plastic at your celebration. Here are some simple tips to help reduce your plastic footprint while still having fun in the sun: Pack In, Pack Out. If you can safely hit the beach, plan ahead and pack reusable items to prevent having to throw out trash or leave anything behind. And always make sure your waste ends up in the designated trash bins or, better yet, bring it home with you to recycle. Have a Plastic-Free BBQ. Everyone loves a good Labor Day BBQ, right? If you’re hosting a socially distanced event, skip the single-use plastics and opt for reusable plates, utensils and glasses. If you are headed to the beach or park, bring along reusable plates, cups, and silverware. And if you must choose disposable, please review our Ocean Friendly Foodware Guide for more sustainable options, which include paper, bamboo, and wood.��� Protect our coast, one catered or take-out meal at a time. Maybe you’re opting for catering or take-out this year? Make the call to support an Ocean Friendly Restaurant that is actively engaged in reducing their plastic use. Check out our list here.��� Hold a solo beach clean-up. While our activists cannot hold group beach cleanups this year, we invite you to join our solo beach cleanup efforts to help clean up what was sadly left behind (here’s everything you need to know to take care of your health and the beach you love).� Sign up to donate monthly to Surfrider. Fighting plastic pollution is an ongoing battle that needs ongoing support. Rows of cars lined the parking lot of the Long Beach Arena Thursday, Sept. 1, for a drive-thru food giveaway hosted by the office of L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn — as part of a countywide initiative to help those struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic. The food drive was in partnership with the City of Long Beach and the L.A. Regional Food Bank.
